I feel like recently there is a very big distrust between consumers and "professional" reviews. Paying money to "pro" reviewers seems like a losing tactic with very diminishing returns. Paying for tardo "utuber" "content" "creators" "thought" "leaders" "influencers" sounds like a more sound tactic. Those people never had morals in the first place, no hypocritical morals they have to follow, etc. I mean, we already see it with games ("influencer" clowns getting keys before actual reviewers), we see it with tech ("influencer" clowns and "bloggers" getting hardware such as iPhones, etc. first). I doubt this has glossed over movie and TV studios.

I haven't watched the video, but the explanation is along these lines:

The Orville season 1 was, well, a new series. RT collected 52 reviews for the first season. A lot of people didn't like it so much and it ended up with a 31% RT score.

These people that didn't like it, dropped the series. They didn't watch season 2.

Therefore, for season 2 RT only collected 11 reviews. 11 reviews by people who already like season 1, and continued liking season 2. Leading to a 100% RT score.

It's simple and I have seen it before. Not to the extent of 100% (which simply means "100% of the reviewers said what they sampled was at least watcheable", it doesn't mean more than that), but Sense8 went from 66% RT (at launch) to 94% (at launch) from season 1 to 2, simply because the vast majority of the reviewers who didn't like season 1 dropped it.

Disclaimer: I didn't check review by review for Orville, so it may well be the case some reviewers really didn't like s1 but liked s2, but I did check for Sense8 back in the day, and basically 90% of those that reviewed the second season had already liked season 1.

You're right, most of the virtue signallers just wrote their tripe for the first season and will just ignore it now that nobody fell for their crap. Most of the "positive" reviews on season 2 are from people that weren't shitting on it because "muh white men", "misogyny!! racizms!! schisms!!" and other made up nonsense in the first place.

Did a quick glance at reviews and looks like it's just 2 morons that did a 180.

Best episode of the series. This season was kinda dull so far, but nice to see things kicking off.

The tense grim tone had me on the edge of my seat, unexpected but very pleasant nonetheless. I like how the show casually hops from genre to genre, you never really know what to expect which helps to keep things fresh and makes up for the quality unevenness Razz

That's pretty good twist. I was still holding out hope that maybe they were once biological and went all Necron on themselves, but I guess Skynet-lite will have to do.

Now I'm on the edge of my seat. This was handled way better than the Krill woman's story, setting up a character, making people like him, and then dropping the shit into the fan. Genuinely curious how they'll handle it.

The world was really spectacular as they were descending through the fog. Less interesting once they landed. Sure it was kinda weird as they were standing on the wall, pushing lights, but that seems like a job that could be handled by software. They should have shown some activity that was a bit more...AI...

Still not entirely sure if these guys are a hive-mind or if they are individuals.

They are Borg. Lol.
Loving this. They squeeze the charm out of each episode. It's still toilet humour here and there. But charming toilet humour.

Issac will save the day. Before the twist I was hoping the kid saw a mural that Issac painted in a secluded area that would show he had feefees. But the twist is much better.

And the conclusion was classic Star Trek. This season is much better than the first as far as it's Star Trek style is concerned. The writers are getting better and McFarlane have done a great job steering this show into a good sci fi series (as opposed to a pure parody of Star Trek with under-the-top jokes all the time).

Who needs Star Trek Discovery and their Red Angel (even if they've changed a lot about the writing after the viewers damning critique to make it more Trekkie)? Smile

With silly Fox we never really know, but apparently it is planned. Even in the most catastrophic scenario though I can see some other TV giant salvaging it anyway, I think we're quite safe for now.

One can only hope. It'a a marvelous show, steadily getting better.

"Identity" used some old tropes, but boy was it fun to watch.

I've very mixed feelings about this season. Half was decent like Identity and Nothing Left on Earth Excepting Fishes but it was a rehash of Enemy Mine and Borg.
Half was meh like Delfectors being again an episode how Moclan society is shit (but good emotional ending) and All the World Is Birthday Cake where they have killed most of the guards and faced no repercussion afterwards (?).

Still a feel good series.

I don't mind the reuse of Trekkie tropes. In fact, it makes me feel a bit nostalgic while the somewhat different style of the show makes it fresh again.

Yup, episode 10 was the best yet, imo. Classic Trek. One scene in particular, exactly like they would have been standing in 10Forward.

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

The last three episodes have been a joy to watch, as someone who isn't familiar with Star Trek I can only say that the solid pacing combined with proper tension and the usual lighthearted moments formed a damn Me Gusta combo. It's also one of the few TV shows where for me there aren't any particularly annoying characters (which helps), keep up the good work Seth men & co.

BTW, am I the only one who thinks that the ship designs are a bit meh on the human side? All of them are practically the same just with different number of nacelles. ST ships had the same general design philosophy but they still managed to look distinct.

What I hate is the shuttle design. Without any equipment and gamer chairs. Feels like last second save when someone rembered they need shuttles. My eyes bleed everytime it's on screen.

Does Macfarlane exhale so extensively within sentences when he normally talks, or is it some weird acting technique he's trying to use?

He also sings (very well too) so it might be due to that, maybe.

He talks with purpose and because he's insecure about his mouth. Had surgery once he got famous. So it still there. He's focusing on his lip movements and such. He was a mere voice actor before fam guy got hit with success and his looks needed... improvement.

He's an educated man-child. Love that he can bring in guest stars from star trek series lol.

Also great last ep. Smoking was hella funny.

Latest episode was ace. The first part of the episode drew quite some inspiration from Star Wars (esp. the music) as well as later Star Trek TNG (and even possibly Stargate SG1... a lot of stars).

No SJW gender-identity stuff whatsoever, just a classic sci-fi action episode with a few twists (no spoilers). To me it seems like writers, actors and FOX TV executives are digging deeper into both pockets and writing after being so well received. Season 2 is shaping up to be a great season. With that said, this was the last episode of the season so I should say: Season 2 was really really good overall, esp. if compared to it's competitor Star Trek: Diaperduty.

As for a Season 3?

Quote:
On December 10, 2018, it was reported that the California Film Commission had approved $15.8 million of tax credits for a potential third season should Fox decide to renew the series again.

...

As of April 26, 2019, The Orville has not been cancelled or renewed for a third season. Stay tuned for further updates.

I'm a bit worried though since the number of viewers wasn't as high as during season 1.

Anyway...

Half of post-TOS actors seem to have worked with Orville in one capacity or other.

Robert Picardo (Star Trek: Voyager)
Marina Sirtis (Star Trek: The Next Generation)
Tim Russ (Star Trek: Voyager)
John Billingsley (Star Trek: Enterprise)
F. Murray Abraham (Star Trek: Insurrection)
Tony Todd (multiple Star Trek roles)

Behind the scenes are a number of Star Trek actors who have moved on to direct, such as Jonathan Frakes (Star Trek: The next Generation) and Robert Duncan McNeill (Star Trek: Voyager).

And there are some guest actors that I was really surprised to see listed when I looked this up:

Jason Alexander (Seinfeld) played an alien based on a rhino

and Rob Lowe as the blue alien (I think I knew but had forgotten)

And Charlize Theron, Patrick Wharburton (the one with the elephant trunk) and Norm McDonald (not my fave comedian but he works just fine as the blob).
