Sure there's a group that spends a ton of money in in-game purchases but it's not really sustainable because the game itself also needs health updates and content releases and support and this is just a trainwreck unlike say Destiny, Fortnite and some other really large successful titles Betashed tried to pinch ideas from. (Bethesda anagram though this here is the other studio and a newer one at that probably more aligned with Zenimax than anything.)
EDIT: It needs a very large overhaul and possible reboot, FF14 took a huge risk but as a MMO it ended out working alright, Elder Scrolls Online had it's downs as a comparison but never as bad as what Fallout 76 is going through week after week and it's just never really getting to a good state where it's not broken or just glitchy and resembles something like a early alpha at best with how many problems there's been now.
I wondered if it could be salvaged for a while but this seems unsustainable unless they're going to do it via any means and including taking a big hit financially on getting it back on track but the Fallout name isn't that big for current gen gamers and the target audience for online gaming they are going for and there are other competing highly successful and super popular titles that are also DOING REALLY WELL and that's where the player base will end up as this totals. (And then why would they be back.)
EDIT: I'm not really qualified to say but at a glance a pretty major restructure and rebuild or reboot or other overhaul is going to be needed and then building up trust and sales again or going F2P which also carries huge risks especially with the already tarnished reputation and in-game purchases and other content trying to carry a "free" game. It's not looking well but they're probably not out just yet either.
They'd have to do more than an overhaul. This game is a dead fish in a barrel. As for Fallout as a franchise not being big with current gen players, I don't believe that at all. Yes, Fallout 76 has severely tarnished the name (I believe they produced and released Fallout 76 due to f*cking up their plans and not work on a Fallout 5 since the release of Fallout 4 or letting Obsidian start work on another one during Fallout 4's last period of development) but the final result depends entirely on how long it will take Bethesda to get a new Fallout SP game out (IF they decide to start such a project after this clusterfuck of a "game").
The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don’t always spoil the good things and make them unimportant.
I expect F2P any day now. If a game has failed so dramatically that they try to use it as a freebie if you buy rubber pads (what's next, buy a carton of milk and get F76 free?) that's a very significantly bad sign.

If they go f2p now their game and servers would cripple under the load, also china farmers would show up expoloiting the game till there is no tomorrow and nothing would work anymore.
Before they do that they definetly need to imrpove but i have ma doubts.
There are some interesting locations and associated quests. The problem is that these locations are broken and the quests cannot be completed as a result.
I am happy to report that you are free to roam around all the other dull, dis interesting locations and quests because no other players are so it won’t effect their servers.
The great pity is that there is a good game, buried deep, deep within this . Chuck a few NPCs and a few progressive questlines along with a fair levelling system and it would be not half bad.
