Zero did well on account of having surviving source assets, REMake1 did not so it got filtered though not too badly but this is a pretty nice take on it and from the stock assets from Gamecube it's a pretty nice result for what can be done from third party and without the needed source files.

Alternatively something like RE4 but that's a several year long running project slowly tracking down what Capcom used as source assets and going about it that way while also resolving and improving an fixing other things in the process. Pre-render background assets can be far trickier though. Good to see more options for the PC version.

EDIT: ReShade with a subtle noise filter could also be used but then it's moving more towards the Silent Hill aesthetics and visual style.
(The noise and grain is just from filtering and upscaling though I'd imagine or at least magnified over what it should have looked like with how these got filtered and processed.)

I installed it and it looks great and installs insanely easy. There are definitely some scenes in the game where things looks soft but overall the AI pack is a definite improvement until someone does a complete redo of all background's / textures.

It's a shame these AI upscalers didn't exist when Capcom were making the remaster. It would have helped them a lot to have something alright looking to begin with, and have budget to spare for further tweaking of the backgrounds.

As they released it, they did a very good job (all things considered) with the first - iconic - areas, and the mansion in general looks acceptable. But then you move on to the later parts of the game e.g. the aqua ring and it seems they ran out of budget and stopped doing any custom work and were just upscaling. So that's where this upscaling mod will help the most.

But overall it's a good remaster. I did a comparison with the GC/Wii version when the remaster came out and people were like "fuck you Capcom it looks exactly the same, just upscaled", and the remaster actually looks substantially better despite its flaws.

There are also a ton of other little tweaks that have gone unnoticed by many, for example they have redone the animations in cutscenes to fix errors.

Notice how Barry's arm clips with his leg in the original. (Aside of the unnatural lighting - why do the characters' backs get illuminated if the only light source is the fireplace right in front of them? The lighting has also been fixed like that.)

Or more expressive facial animations:

Despite its flaws, it's the best version of the game for sure - and what a game it is!

The character models overall are more fleshed out and 3D too, pockets and similar for Chris instead of textures from memory and the background went from animated 2D textures to 3D for things like the crypt but these are few and far between existing as a handful of areas in total.

EDIT: Ah it can already be observed in the above comparison pictures with Barry and Jill. Smile

EDIT: Huh yeah the later areas certainly don't look as nice.

I still wouldn't really recommend playing in wide mode if you want the best possible quality it looks far better in the original aspect.

Even if the quality was perfect 4K I wouldn't play in widescreen. The pan and scan takes me out of the game. Why butcher the original composition Smile

Interpolate 15fps FMV to 60 I think 30 would have been fine.

https://reupscaleproject.blogspot.com/2019/02/status-update.html

Version 1.5 of reupscale project targets a Summer release and will feature combined Gigapixel and ESRGAN upscales (with the occasional custom work also done) for better results, and an upscale of the textures used by the 3D models of the game.

This will further removed the caked over-sharpening Capcom used for the remaster, e.g.:

Nice! That's going to be quite a bit of work though getting the source assets cleaned up but the example images shows some really good results already.

EDIT: Not that sharpening is always bad but applied that hard on the actual textures directly and yeah that really kills the finer details and ruins the asset quality so I'm glad to see a improvement on that front.
(It's not completely filtered to hell but it is quite a bit too strong with the sharpness filter there.)

Took me a while to figure out, but turns out I'm actually playing on easy Laughing
Thought the options were easy, normal and hard but apparently its game jorno mode, easy and normal.

Whatever, will keep playing it on easy. RL has enough stress these days
