Great game!
Wish we could get this kind of remake of Nocturne and Blair Witch Project trilogy.

Apparently RE3 remake is also in the works
I hope Code Veronica is next after that (althought i doubt it since they already released Code Veronica X). I thought it was better than 3

The guy that said RE3make is in development also said RE2make was going to have fixed camera as an option, and look how that turned out. I think he was just fishing for e-peen points, because anyone with half a brain will realize RE3 that shares the RPD as a location, and can share various "Racoon City" assets (cars, buildings, you name it), and can use Mr. X's base mechanic for Nemesis, will make perfect business sense for Capcom to develop, unless RE2make somehow fails to sell well (unlikely). You don't need "inside sources" to tell you that.
However, I think we'll see RE8 before that.
Back to the game, it seems they made this very stand alone. For example, it's disappointing that Ada doesn't mention John as her motive for being in the city, given how that was tying to RE1, but not anymore.

Speaking of sales, peak amount of concurrent players on Steam is 3.5× that of RE7. That doesn't mean it will end up selling 3.5x more than RE7, but it is an indication it's selling better. I'm sure it's the same across all platforms.

Great game! Completed it with Leon on standard difficulty. Could have been a bit harder, especially at the end, where the game just throws resources at you, but it was a good experience. Looking forward to a second run with Claire.

Why would it be in RE2 in the first place?

Is that the Itchy-Tasty note? |
Off-topic:
Written by Kenichi Iwao, the man who saved Resident Evil IMO, and is just as responsible for the success of RE1 as Mikami, but unfortunately he is barely known and celebrated for his contribution to the game.

Quote: | You’re perhaps best known for your work writing the scenario for the original Biohazard. Can you tell us a bit about how you came to be involved in this project?
I joined the project in mid-development. Originally, there were no humans in the game, just cyborgs! It was supposed to be a horror game, still, but by having these Terminator-style characters, it just wasn’t very scary at all. I decided to change up the characters. The initial draft had a mad scientist-like doctor who was doing freakish experiments. I ended up redesigning the characters who would wind up having defining roles in the game, like Chris, Jill, and Wesker, as well as creating the Umbrella Corporation as an enemy, and concepts like the T-virus. I also wrote all of the diary entries and files you find throughout the game.
Oh, so you wrote “Itchy. Tasty.” *laughs*
Yes!I also did a lot of extra research for things like how much ammunition the guns could hold, the different types of shotguns…
So having really limited ammo was your idea, then?
Ah, well, I haven’t talked about this before, but there’s a game called Alcazar: The Forgotten Fortress for the MSX that was an inspiration. There are numerous castles in the game, but the dungeons you end up exploring are random. As a result, the amount of supplies in those dungeons was extremely limited.
The graphics in Alcazar aren’t that great, but I think the enemy AI is particularly good for the time. There are a lot of different ways enemies attack, and you have to strategize, like grouping enemies together to go around them. I originally wanted Biohazard to have more elements similar to this game, like using mines and traps on the zombies, but we couldn’t do that from the schedule constraints. Technologically, I think it would have been possible. |
This man saved Resident Evil. Mikami might be a great director (as in implementing the gameplay mechanics, pacing, supervising the team, etc.) but Mikami as a scenario planner is bad. Hence the original version which had the characters be cyborgs.
Mikami has admitted he didn't think the game needed a story and management were pressuring him to write one but he was like "why do we need it?"

Quote: | -- The story of RE was already build up from the beginning?
M: No, the story came after the game. No script, only a flow-chart and notes.
I wanted to make a haunted house, game concept was you can enjoy the fear in your house. A haunted house doesn't need a script or story. My thoughts on the game RE were not like another game with a story, and I tried to explain to the Management of Capcom, but every time I was called on to go to a meeting, My boss said "When are you going to finish the story and script!!!" If it had been Mr. Fujiwara, He never would have said like that.
-- It is hard to explain something to people who never understand.
M: Every time when they asked me "The story", I kept telling them "A haunted house doesn't need story." For me, story is only "Better than nothing." But I need to make an opening and ending, so I made that part, after that I put just little piece story and cut-scene, I wanted to make the story depended on how player beat the game. So, really different from RE2.
Should have create all backgrounds first and then make the game, but I didn't have that much time. I thought it is already hard enough to create a game so players feel "The FEAR", it is almost impossible to add story or dramatic situations. |
Mikami's only writing credit (since RE1 got re-written) is RE4, and you can see how off the rails the game's story becomes there, with the freaking midget as a boss, etc. (Although the script ended up being very fun/ny, although I suspect that might also be the result of the localization team re-interpreting it as tongue in cheek, but it was very off for a RE title).
The beloved characters, the concept of Umbrella, the T-virus, the creepy diaries, the survival horror aspect of limited ammo, the "realism" in terms of guns, ammo, etc. all of it came from Iwao.
Some time after the release of RE1, Iwao moved over to Square, and directed Parasite Eve II, that brought survival horror elements to that series.
During his time writing RE1, Iwao even came up with concepts such as the Progenitor virus and Wesker's return in future titles, plot points that were touched years later in RE:CV and RE0 by the writers that succeeded him at Capcom, so his legacy lives very deep in the heart of the series.

I think the engine is designed to be pretty light, and that might partly be because RE7 had a PSVR version, so they had to have super fast 60 fps rendering with low latency, so they made several architectural decisions that wouldn't bog down the framerate with heavy shading effects. And RE2 benefits from those decisions, and probably DMC V will benefit as well, since it's the type of game that needs a stable 60 fps.
That being said the game runs bad on original PS4/XB1, 40-50fps, so neither 30 nor 60.

Many games on PS4 have a 30 lock option, dunno why this doesnt'.
Consistent 30 FPS are far better than janky 45 FPS with raped frame timing, fuck that.
