We learned today that Ivan Reitman has signed on as the producer and director of Ghostbusters III (the movie), hopefully signaling that the series is in good hands. Of course, Ghostbusters II wasn't great... but who knows.

In case you hadn't heard, there are also some older rumors that Rick Moranis, despite having given up acting altogether, will be returning to the screen for this one. Sigourney Weaver could be back in as well.

Quote:
Reitman said that screenwriters Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky had turned in a first draft of the script and are working on a second draft right now. "Good work is being done and all of us have our fingers crossed... There's some very cool things in the new draft," he said.

Here's a plot on comingsoon.net, not sure if its true or not:

Plot Summary: Columbia Pictures has set "The Office" co-executive producers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky to write a script for a "Ghostbusters" film designed to bring back together the original cast of Harold Ramis, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson.

The studio is hoping to tap into some of the same acting talent. Aykroyd, Ivan Reitman and Ramis are consulting at this point, the concept is that the old Ghostbusters would appear in the film in some mentor capacity.

I like bum.

Looks like they're talking about scrapping the idea of Ghostbusters 3 (there's been so much on again, off again, drama surrounding the project anyhow) and just.... remake the original. Sigh.

Sad

It's not that they're out of ideas, it's just that they're less and less likely to shell out cash for projects that aren't necessarilly potential blockbusters.

hes my often cited example of why casting actors based primarily on the characters race is a totally bullshit concept. BEST ACTOR FOR THE ROLE, I SAY!! downey IS the greatest black actor ever.

that said, tell me that wouldnt be a great cast list. especially john goodman, i could watch him in anything that wasnt porn.

Jason Reitman To Direct “Ghostbusters 3”

Quote:
Jason Reitman, whose father Ivan directed the first two original “Ghostbusters” films, will reportedly direct the next installment in the franchise at Sony Pictures.

Variety helped break the news, saying Reitman has co-written a screenplay with Gil Kenan and plans to shoot the film this summer ahead of a Summer 2020 release. It also indicates the film will be a continuation of the 1984 sequel and will not be connected to the 2016 reboot.

EW had even more including quotes from Jason Reitman who says: “I’ve always thought of myself as the first Ghostbusters fan, when I was a 6-year-old visiting the set. I wanted to make a movie for all the other fans. This is the next chapter in the original franchise. It is not a reboot. What happened in the ‘80s happened in the ‘80s, and this is set in the present day.”

It’s not clear at present if or how many of the original cast members will be back as further story details are under wraps. Reitman says there’s a: “lot of wonderful surprises and new characters for the audience to meet” and so further details will be dolled out over coming months.

Ivan Reitman’s Montecito Pictures will produce with Ivan reportedly seeing this as a passing of the torch. This would also be the younger Reitman’s first major tentpole film. Sony is also developing an animated “Ghostbusters” film, but that will come out after this with a different team involved in creating it.

So this will be the animated one that Reitman announced some time ago or Ecto Force, that takes place in the future?

It will be interesting to see if they'll manage to convince Bill Murray, his cameo in Ghostbusters 2016 was nearly as insulting as the rest of the movie. Sad Laughing

Aykroyd has always supported the idea of a third proper(ish ish) Ghostbusters if I recall correctly, though there are a ton of question marks. At least the expectations are below zero, so there's virtually no risk of being disappointed Razz

This one is supposed to be a "normal people" movie after the last one allahu-akbared in the box office... it's the original director as a producer with his son as director or something like that
