What a dumb comparison... why not add microsoft's garbage windows store, gog and ubifail store while they're at it? I'd bet that IF the sales were in the same numbers as in steam they would have made even much more $!

Also let's not forget that if they had sold the game for $100, they would have made even more money!11!11

So indies should band together and decide from now and on their games are going to start at $100!!!!111 and see how that works for them with the "we are assuming people would still buy our product" mentality. Laughing

Very wrong. During PC gaming's worst years when developers/publishers were abandoning the platform en masse, Valve had their highest EVER output in their history as game developers.

Orange Box, L4D1, L4D2, Portal 2 were released during those years (2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, respectively). They haven't released so many great games in such a short amount of time before, or since.

Their more extended break from big game development was AFTER everyone already returned to releasing games on PC (and that's thanks to Steam BTW!)

At the same point in time, Epic was wishing death upon PC gaming. Totally should support them instead of Valve, guize.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending Epic Store here. I find their store to be quite underwhelming features and games wise. But Steam has a ton of issues as well and we shouldn't ignore them. Competition is good and I'm hoping we'll see some improvements in the close future, either from Steam or other platforms.

Personally my #1 concern with these digital stores is longevity. And I don't trust any other company as much as I do Valve on this one.

I'm not saying they are perfect, or anything like that. And for all I know Valve one day will start charging $9999999999 for new games, or put Denuvo enforced or whatever.

But for the games that I have already bought and continue to buy, I don't trust any other business to have a functioning store 20 years from now so that I can download and play them. I obviously don't 100% trust Valve on that either, but the other companies I trust way less.

With GOG it is obviously very nice offering DRM free games that will continue to function past the store's expiration date, but they will never get the latest and greatest games like that.

Epic 2019 Cross-Platform Online Services Roadmap

Successfully launching and operating a live, online game requires a suite of services that go far beyond the functionality of a traditional game engine. These services are expensive to build, test and harden in real-world conditions, but once operational, are relatively inexpensive to scale to more games and more users.

At Epic, our goal is to help game developers succeed. Throughout 2019, we’ll be launching a large set of cross-platform game services originally built for Fortnite, and battle-tested with 200,000,000 players across 7 platforms. These services will be free for all developers, and will be open to all engines, all platforms, and all stores. As a developer, you’re free to choose mix-and-match solutions from Epic and others as you wish.

All services will be operated in a privacy-friendly, GDPR-compliant manner.

Epic’s Online Services
The service launch will begin with a C SDK encapsulating our online services, together with Unreal Engine and Unity integrations. We’ll start with a core set of features and expand over time. Specifically:

  • Cross-Platform Login, Friends, Presence, Profile, and Entitlements (coming Q2-Q3 2019 to PC, other platforms throughout 2019): Provides the core functionality for persistently recognizing players across multiple sessions and devices; identifying friends; and managing free and paid item entitlements. This will support all 7 major platforms (PC, Mac, iOS, Android, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch) to the full extent each platform allows per-title.
  • PC/Mac Overlay API (coming Q3 2019): Provides a user interface for login, friends, and other features in a game-agnostic, engine-agnostic way.
  • Cross-Platform Voice Comms (coming Q3 2019 to all platforms): Epic is building a new in-game voice communications service supporting all platforms, all stores, and all engines, which will be available for free. (For developers needing an immediately-available voice solution, check out Discord, Vivox, TeamSpeak, Ventrilo, and Mumble.)
  • Cross-Platform Parties and Matchmaking (coming Q3-4 2019 to all platforms)
  • Cross-Platform Data Storage, Cloud-Saved Games (coming Q2 2019)
  • Cross-Platform Achievements and Trophies (coming Q3 2019)

The services described above are just our first steps. As you can see from our game and engine efforts, we’re also working on further support for user-generated content, enhanced social features, anti-cheat, and more.

Reliability

We operate our services primarily on Amazon Web Services data centers throughout the world to bring the high reliability and wide international reach required by the next generation of online and socially-connected games.

Connecting People

We connect developers and players across all platforms, and respect existing platform relationships and player accounts. For example, Fortnite runs on 7 platforms that are fully interoperable; the game requires no login on console, and supports multi-platform login via Facebook, Google, Xbox Live, PSN, and Nintendo accounts, in addition to Epic accounts; and supports Twitch account linking.

Besides these existing account and service integrations, we’re eager to work with partners on further efforts to connect accounts, gaming services, and cloud services for a more seamless experience.

Stay tuned for more information over the next few months.

Maybe they should've finished the development of these basic features before taking on Steam?

Nah, clearly launching a barebones piece of shit with a bunch of moneyhatted games is the way to go!

We should develop our own launcher too, a modern platform suite for the perfected Humpbrowsing experience. With an accessible interface engineered to comply with the next-gen internet 2.0 (5x5cm buttons, two posts per page), convenient PumpStore where Indie developers can receive up to 100% percent of the revenue*, one complete forum section available at launch and 10 posts viewable for free per day, I'm sure it will increase our user base exponentially! I half-hope as a response Valve buys lifetime exclusivity for some AAA kick-ass games (if they want, they can) so that I hear the exact same devs complain this is anti-PC!!!111, while they are doing the same thing in the name of "we are saving PC gaming!" and expect us to praise them as our saviors.

What a journalistic disaster that "article" is, presenting the opinion of the developer who has already signed a deal, as a fact.

lol at people in the comments saying Valve also has Steam only exclusives

it's the dev / publisher that chose to only sell it on Steam

it's not like Valve is going around and paying people to only sell on Steam

i hope these exclusives don't sell well on Epic because this is not the way to go about it

Epic and the devs/publishers should just do 8-10% off sales instead and still offer the games on other stores

PUBG is still the #1 played game on Steam, with something like 80% more players than #2 (Dota). Razz

Well, i can only wish for Christmas for Epic to go down under and these fucks to lose their jobs. Yes, i'm that despicable. This exclusivity shit triggers me to no good end, and no, i'm not installing another damn launcher. Their ambitions is for me to lose every damn game i've ever bought on Steam. Yes, they would actually love for Steam to go down under and stand tall and proud atop if it's corpse.

Welp, according to today's news, the mobile version of PUBG has as many players as Fortnite does on all devices, in other words more than 200 million people have played it: https://www.theverge.com/2018/12/18/18146774/pubg-mobile-players-fortnite

Mobile games make way more then any other gaming platform and have for many years now. It is a sad fact since a lot of games are dumbed down for potential Mobile versions in the future as everyone wants a piece of that money pie.
