Bethesda Game studios has Achieved Exactly what they wanted to.
Let’s say you’re playing Elder Scrolls or Fallout, one of the titles BGS developed themselves. You’d be following a mission marker across a vast vista more often then not.
Suddenly an npc shows up begging for help. They need you to give them something, or perhaps they need something from a nearby settlement but it’s crawling with enemies. You give them some healing items or clear out the baddies. Afterwards this named npc offers some cash/caps or an item in way of thanks. It’s likely nothing majorly game changing but you will remember the encounter fondly.
Now with Fallout 76 that’s no AI controlled npc anymore but a living, flesh & blood player. They came running up road looking to trade. Or Perhaps screaming through the woods being chased down by a Boss. Maybe after a brief interaction they leave exactly the same way that npc would have. You go your separate ways, never to see each other again.
But what if they stay? Team up with you offering a far richer experience than any AI follower could. You laugh, you scream “oh s**t” as a swarm of Mole Miners pop up. You kill the irradiated Bass Turd and take a snapshot to commemorate your moment of triumph.
This is what 76 does.
This is what makes it amazing.
This is what Bethesda envisioned and I can bare witness to fact that it does play out this way.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed for this abomination to fail miserably, even though it seems inevitable that despite its (absolutely ridiculous ) alpha-like state, obsolete tech, inner derp concept and usual Bethineptitude, all the trendy yolopeople will still be immensely attracted to it ...for a month or two at least. Hopefully, the lasting factor will be a relatively weak one and Beth's plans to keep going ad infinitum will collapse, a nice agonizing death while the team of synth devs desperately tries to shelter the Titanic would be a healthy outcome both for the franchise* and industry in general.
*Although when it comes to the role-playing part that kind of hope already perished a long time ago
This shit already got 24 thread pages, the hump has alot of Fallout fanboys, even though the last good game was New Vegas.
Let it go guys, it will only get worse from here.

yeah the trendy yolo people part reminds me on metal gear survive
it was a survival shitfest and there were still ppl buying and defending it to the death and telling how great it is. (zombie fence sim lul)
and now it's dead.
Let's just hope that the fallout name isnt too big toofail and even stupid fanboys see within a hsort perid of time that it is crap.
They need a new game engine. Creation Engine just isn't a viable option and I bet it's a mess as well with new and old bits bolted together in a not-so-pretty way making development messy and the games buggy.
So they basicaly dropped any pretense and made a shooter?
If anyone wants Fallout inspired rpg goodness I recommend ATOM rpg, currently version 0.9, with 1.0 coming in December. Extremely cheap at 15 usd normal, 5 for Indians
does atom have random encounters/loot n stuff though ? so no playthrough is the same, looks like unity and unity doesnt do that well when i remember from wasteland, gfx do look dogshit
Do settlements you build remain in the game world when you log out? How is the state maintained? What happens if players decide to tear it down while you're away?
Doesn't seem so. I went to get some lunch, I was away for maybe an hour. I claimed a 'settlement', built a few turrets, then I logged out. When I logged back in, the site was unclaimed, and all my stuff was gone.
EDIT: tested it. Logged out for 2 seconds. When the game loaded the site was back to default. Had 3 "extractor" thingies. All gone. Had at least 8 turrets set up. All gone. 4 medium generators? Gone.
It's quite astonishing how amateurish this whole game is.
EDIT2: Also, there don't seem to be "servers" in the traditional sense. It seems there's one central world, and the game dumps you into an instance. No wonder anything you build is reset after you log out.
lol wat
so what's the point of building stuff? spend hours building the perfect camp only to lose it when you log out
As others said, camps are semi-permanent. If you leave and nobody else has things there when you log back in, it will still be there, and even then it's easy to move camp and plop things down in a new location. "Settlements" in the traditional FO4 sense are only yours while you're online and lose everything when you log out. Now they are glorified mining spots and since there are resource spots around the world, it's really not worth the hassle of setting things up and defending it.
But thanks to the fundamentally broken building system, I only see people just plopping down workbenches and their stash in the wild, and calling it a day.

You can also create a blueprint of what you built so when you do log off and return to find it gone, the blueprint restores it for you.
If you like exploring, and nothing else, sure. If you like to have a rich story, or enjoy building stuff, nope.
Thanks. Got few buddies that already have the game. Im thinking if playing coop with friends would be worth it and look at the game like we are playing Borderlands
So the game runs at a locked 20 fps in certain areas on the PS4 and has drops to 10 fps on XB1 X.
Great coding by Bethesda!
TWIN PEAKS is "something of a miracle."
"...like nothing else on television."
"a phenomenon."
"A tangled tale of sex, violence, power, junk food..."
"Like Nothing On Earth"

Go ahead and play Borderlands, then. Don't support fucking Beth and their shitty game.
