Also, they are usually based on 1 or 2 episodes, not the whole thing.

A review says Netflix gave them access to 6 out of 10. Good enough.

I've been enjoying it so far, but jump scares are getting annoying.

Wow.. ep05 was fantastic.
My favorite episode so far.
PS I'm at ep08 atm and tbh I think this show would be much better without all these jump scare scenes.

And I've finished it.
The last episodes were disappointing.
I think this show would work better if all supernatural elements Spoiler: |
were not real and related only to the children's psychological traumas and their mother's and Nell's mental illness. |
It was a great character-driven drama, but when it went all Spoiler: | supernatural in the last episodes, | it felt kinda cheap and silly and I got disappointed tbh.
I wanted to give it 8+/10 but after the last episodes, I can't rate it higher than 7.5+/10.
Still a pretty good show.

I've watched 2 episodes i think.. don't care for it too much i have to say.
I don't think horror works as TV shows, i mean there can't be horror all the time, it has to be spread out, and in between those interesting moments you have this mundane shit that you don't care about. You'll end up investing a lot of time watching a boring story and mediocre characters/actors.. I have tried watching American Gothic too, so much bullshit to sit though. No thanks.

I finished this last week and I'm actually not quit sure how to rate it.
It's reasonably well put together but I feel that the writers thought they were a lot cleverer than they really were. The series seems to be a jumble of puzzle pieces in the form of flashbacks with each piece being shown out of order. Now, some movies have masterfully used this mechanism to come to a massive climax (Constant Gardener for example, one of my favourite movies) but this series doesn't quite get the climax right. It spreads it over multiple episodes, slowly letting you see the big picture which works well, too, but doesn't have the same "oomph". By the last episode, quite a bit is going on and you can't help but feel that the final "reveal" isn't all that big.
Don't get me wrong, it's worth watching but I feel like the series could have been a lot better. It seems to not be able to decide what it wants to be. At times it hints that everything they see is imaginary, that it's all in their heads while at other times they're pretty insistent it's NOT in their heads. So why keep danging the "it's all in their heads, they're imagining it" carrot in front of the viewer's face? The series lacks a solid focus and that's what makes it merely good instead of great.

It's a good story but every episode drags on too long. They could've condensed it to 6 episodes and the pacing would've been a lot better.

Yes I agree. Near the end they try to tie together the loose ends with the red room, showing you repeated "scare" clips from before but now showing you the full picture but it doesn't have the impact it should have because these the entire series is full of random flashbacks for no apparent reason so these scenes have no impact. The only scene which I felt worked, was when the father said "you talked about a clock repairman in your book but there WAS no repairman on that day, you saw a ghost" combined with the "there was no tree house" line. Still, even that scene could have been better if the tree house had actually been in view more instead of in short clips.
The clips approach just doesn't work well because it all feels so random and so disjointed that you dismiss them as random unconnected flashbacks.

Spoilers.
But anyway, we watched it last weekend, pulled the blinds down and marathoned the whole season. Was fun, kept us interested 8/10.

So... What was up with that ending?
Spoiler: | It only fixed the family at the end. What about the house? What about them being haunted by actual ghosts outside the house? Has that suddenly stopped? If so, for what reason? |

Spoiler: | The dad sacrificing his own life to stay back in the house as a ghost, forever. This deal is the reason. |
