I know. There are only few real hdr monitors and I am indeed not spending 2k. I am not watching tv either. I just like to sit at a desk for movies and games(ps4 too) and 27-32" is max I can fit there.
Anyway - good va monitor wouldnt hurt but thats not the topic... Pc monitors kinda suck now too no matter the price

Yeah, I agree. I watch the movies on my OLED and you see the TV notify you that it is changing to HDR mode to play the video. It looks good.
Then you just rely on the media player software on the computer when you aren't watching on the HDR capable display.

This is how it also looks on avforums and so on.
The release is Predator.1987.2160p.UHD.BluRay.X265-IAMABLE but others behave the same way.
There is no HDR in the description of that so I was just expecting resolution bump but I understand there is HDR now involved...
And what would happen if "let's say" I bought monitor that can accept and display hdr 10 (let's say quick example benq ew277hdr). Switch hdr in windows and what then?
I mean I appreciate this whole 4k and HDR thing but I just barely upgraded all my shit to 1080p and now there are 2 more factors + monitors, signals and madvr coming up :doh: I gotta get myself either 4k monitor or HDR capable monitor... even if it's fake, it should read the signal correctly. |

Judging from your screenshots, the tone mapping is working.
Is this the release that you got? Is the file you have 34GB
This particular one is tagged as HDR in the title. When a video is not outright tagged as HDR, you can tell if it is HDR by looking at the media info and looking for "BT.2020". That means the video is HDR.

Yes it is 34gb. There also seems to be no drawbacks to usimg madvr. It is making those hdr releases look correctly and does not change normal releases.
Thanks for the settings too. I will experiment later

No it doesn't. There isn't a "correct" way to watch them, only better than nothing if you had not other option. In fact, if you don't have an HDR display, you are better off with the studio 1080p master, because they have graded the film scene by scene professionally, whereas you have a one solution fits all kind of thing in madVR, and it's not very good.
Most TVs are like that too, but their contrast and peak brightness are much more wider, so their own software grading becomes less of an issue unless it's a shit TV.
Since you neither have a 4K display nor one capable of HDR, I don't see the point of downloading UHD release at all.

The problem he would have with that is that Predator is a really poor release in 1080p. The DNR in that release is very noticeable.
If I remember correctly, the first Bourne movie is very poor quality release in 4k. The 1080p release is better.
Most of the time what you stated is correct but every once in a while the studios can botch a release so you have to read the reviews to see which is the better one regardless of the hardware you have.

Yes there are exceptions. For Predator and Predator 2, the HDR there is superficial at best (fake HDR as it wasnโt filmed with that information), so taking a 1080 teen ode of the 4K leads to no loss.
My comment is about the general case, and indeed, the vast majority of cases. Exceptions always exist, which is why you always keep your ear to the ground.

In fact there is no new remaster of Predator in 1080p(only 2010 dnr). Only UHD is from this year. And it looks good with madvr as on screenshots I've posted.
@Leonatan - there is still a place for 4k scene releases even when 1080p releases are also there.
Looks at The Matrix comparison which finally got NEW 1080p and new 4k releases which remove green filter. 1080p version is very blown out, 4k looks bland in default mpchc, 4k looks great with madvr.

Why the fuck you bringing old movies as examples? And extreme ones at that. Yes, The Matrix has a new remaster that removed the green tint. Yes, Predator has a new remaster with grain in instead of DNR shit. There are a few more examples. But those are a handful. Anything modern, shot at 12 or 14 bit of information, will be hard to compress properly to 8 bit from a 10 bit source. You want a very good example of this? Take Planet Earth 2, Blue Planet 2, Sicario, Blade Runner 2049. madVR looks serviceable; I won't say it's bad, obviously. But the studio 1080p master is much "better" because each scene has been properly compressed into 8 bit from the professional master. The result is much better.
One way to improve madVR math is by reading the additional metadata information from HDR10+ or Dolby Vision. But as far as I am aware, there is no dual layer DV decoder right now, and no content in HDR10+.

Dolby Vision has two modes, either HDR10 + an additional video track which brings extra information (dual layer) or a single DV video stream. All bluray is dual layer DV, while all streaming (Apple iTunes, Amazon, Netflix, etc) are single layer DV. Since none of the streaming services' 4K streams have been cracked (webrip is not a crack), practically no single layer DV content exists.

Planet Earth 2 and Blue Planet 2 in particular are a huge difference. The 1080p looks much better than madVR work. A lot of care went with these 1080p masters. You can clearly see the technical side of the BBC has a lot of respect and love for its content and process.

So I just got the: The.Punisher.2004.2160p.UHD.BluRay.x265-WhiteRhino
Very nie, grainy detailed release. What I am starting to notice with these latest few UHD releases, which are the only real choice because older bd releases are dnr'ed or wrong (So Predator, Matrix and now This) is the nature of sdr conversion.
When converting hdr-sdr with madvr, the default setting is 200 nits(if You let madvr decide). Many scenes are too dark(like cat in matrix scene is almost invisible). Setting the conversion to 100 nits helps quite a bit.
Predator, Matrix and Punisher are still pretty dim but these releases are really supposed to be watched on a real hdr screen which can process 10 bit. I still don't are much for 4k but even then, there are no real hdr displays, closest on pc aside from 2k$ stuff being ew277hdr which can take the signal correctly. Pcmonitors reviewer "suspects" there might be some dimming zones... I wouldn't count on that but I am still interested to at least try it, now that I see that 10 bit era is finally starting to creep in.
Anyhow - Most amazing news of the year is (@WaldoJ You will love this) - THE PUNISHER 2004 EXTENDED editon just got UHD release !!! I've never seen it before because it was limited to dvd only as far as I remember.
