I'm sure journalist's scores for the PC version were genuine. I mean, why wouldn't you give an 8-9 to a coop game that was delayed for 7 months just to wait a few more weeks to be able to play online. In the meantime: mouse & keyboard controls are a joke, the UI is horrendous, the performance issues make some of the fights unplayable, many textures look like vomit, etc.

It's not untypical for bugs that the publisher tells journos in advance that "this is pre-release code and the day 1 patch will fix all these so please ignore them".
For example, it happened with the Shenmue games and Digital Foundry. https://www.neogaf.com/threads/shenmue-1-2-what-were-the-devs-doing.1465078/page-2#post-253416134
Quote: | It's solid overall but, yeah, there are some really annoying bugs - many of which we were told would be addressed with a patch that either never materialized or simply didn't cover everything it should. |
Now, a good journalist would mention them AND note that they've been told they will be fixed by the time gamers get the game on their hands. But others pretend they never experienced them.

None aside of connection problems have been fixed. The UI was set in stone and the journalists just choose to ignore it. But it's not like I'm surprised, editor from PC Gamer didn't know what mouse acceleration is.

Quote: | Status Update - Mouse Control Improvements
18 SEPTEMBER - MHW_CAPCOM
We will soon be releasing an update with new mouse control options for the in-game camera.
We will let you know once the update goes live.
The new control type is in line with the control standards for most PC games.
To change the controls, open up the in-game Start Menu, go to Options, and select the Controls tab.
Here you'll be able to switch between the different mouse control schemes.
If you wish to adjust the sensitivity, go to the same Options menu, and select the Camera tab. |

It won't do much anyway, it's just not the way the game is made. Part of what makes it so infuriating is struggling with the controls, as the character attacks independently to what the mouse is pointing at, so to speak. To better put this, if you point at a limb with your mouse and hit the attack button, the character will still hit whichever way he's looking at, not where you're pointing at with the mouse. It's a pretty shitty system, which is why i played the whole game using a Bow instead of the cool looking melee.

There's no mouse acceleration now and camera works much smoother but the game is still meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh.
And it still runs like shit, maybe even worse.

From what a buddy of mine told me (I couldn't be bothered to check), the characters with melee weapon turn to hit towards the direction the camera is pointing at.

It took me a while to also get this, but i think it's an inherited combo mechanic from past iterations.
Most combos don't allow you to change the direction of attack as you are performing them, however there's usually one move (different for each weapon) that'll allow you to either change the direction completely or alter it.
i.e. by pressing right click attack (circle - mid combo) with the dual blades and holding a direction, your character will actually change direction to match the way you're pressing on the stick.
Triangle on the other hand will do no such thing and will keep your character attacking in the same direction.
I agree that this feels off in the beginning, but over time it ends up feeling like a nice addition over the alternative (w + camera adjust + mash click).

I was going to buy this for my son as a surprise gift. I see on here there is not much interest, and I see the reviews are mixed, can anyone who owns the game give an update after the latest patches (if there are any?)
I don't want to buy him a turd.
Thanks.

Same doubt I'm having... from all the comments I've read it seems it's worthless without co-op... is this true?

I guess the question is... is the game worth it even with the added grind... or is the game grind-y and ONLY worth it for the coop?

It's perfectly fine i played a lot of Monster Hunter games solo cause i play on emulators, i doubt this game is any different and it wouldn't surprise me if we see a steam online fix for it soon.

There's a lot of online events tied into exclusive rewards though but perhaps Cheat-Engine could work if the anti-cheat system is either disabled or lessened to where it won't crash the game immediately if certain actions are detected.
(Including modifying events I believe.)
There's plenty of gear for offline use though and it's not like the online stuff is strictly better or a direct upgrade even for things like Kulve Taroth which is a raid type battle though smaller scale and it can be soloed with practice too with some knowledge on how the battle works.
