|

Well, I don't see one yet, so list your favorite/must see films of the year to perhaps give us an idea of what to watch next! (up to todays date of course)
Personally I loved
Crash
Sin City
Batman Begins
Good Night, and Good Luck
Of course, I should point out that I missed and am anxious to view
Hotel Rwanda
Syriana
Munich
History of Violence
I haven't seen many new movies recently and would love some suggestions!

Crash really sucked balls, it seemed too set up and was just boring. Hostel is also very disappointing.
Sin City was great.
Other movies I liked:
Jarhead
The Island
Deuce Bigalow European Gigolo (nobody likes this movie, but nevertheless I think its the funniest flick of 05)
2005 was kinda lame year for Hollywood, more quantity than quality, there was no really outstanding movie, no movie that left you behind helpless like Se7en. (I haven't seen Munich yet, heard its great) Most of the movies were no brainers, suited for the increasing stultification of the western civilization.
The real strength lies in the TV Series, the great first Season of Lost, Battlestar Galactica, 4400 and HBO's Deadwood and Rome really caught me in front of the Television.
To Hollywood: Less SFX and more Story pls, kthxbye

Yup because those two are totally different movies. Deuce Bigalow is a comedy - there is no rationality in the storyline, it's a movie you best watch drunk, with friends, stoned or all together. And it worked - I laughed my ass off, the movie did its job. The jokes are absolutely tasteless, r-rated and fucked up. Just how I like it. Kinda like Eurotrip.
Crash tries to be a serious drama but ends up in endless loops of set up "confrontations" between people from different races. Here's a review I took from imdb; it pretty much states my opinion about Crash. However the reviewer gave it 1 out of 10 stars, I would still give it 5.

I get the impression that I was watching a different movie to the majority of other people I know who have seen this film. It's not really that I found the film offensive or anything - just that the script was unbelievably amateurish for a film that had obviously had a bit of money thrown at it. I really respected Paul Haggis' work on the Million Dollar Baby script and was bitterly disappointed to see how bad this script was. It was clear to me that it was desperate to be the 'racism' version of Traffic, but I don't think Traffic was really a film worth ripping off in the first place. The worst feature of this film is the way it shamelessly spoon-feeds its audience. Does Haggis really think we are so dumb as to require a shot of the blanks? Do we really need to see the phone book sitting on Farhad's dashboard, with the address circled in black texta? Can we not be left to make some leaps in logic for ourselves? I also had a major problem with the dialogue which was so 'on the nose'. I have heard one critic say that the quality of dialogue is deceptively high, because even though people may not speak this way, they certainly do think this way. That is irrelevant. It is the job of a script like this to utilise dialogue in a way that helps add to the characterisations and believability of the (in this case highly implausible) situations that are set up. These characters all speak using the same voice and all they ever talk about is racism. Surely the purpose of a film like this should be to promote the fact that race should not really be an issue in these situations, but by making it the sole focus of every scene, doesn't it become innately racist itself? Characters walk around spouting their philosophies and conveniently memorised statistics on race relations as though they're regurgitating extracts from the research essay they've just written. It's utterly unconvincing and obvious. A film should reveal its meaning gradually, not slap us in the face with it in the opening scenes and then never let up. I can see that Haggis' intentions with this film were honorable, but dare I suggest that by directing his own script he has not been able to identify and, therefore, overcome its flaws. I really hope that writer/directors will be really careful in future when approaching this 'mosaic' style of narrative. It has been done well a number of times, but getting the balance between the personal and the political right is very difficult. And Robert Altman will not be outdone in that department.

I have to agree with the TV comment. TV is getting so much better as the years go on. Not so much in the comedy department, only a few new shows make me laugh anymore (Arrested Development, Curb your Enthusiasm and The Office (UK & US)), but in drama is where TV is taking over. There are so many well written shows to come out over the past 2 years. House, Lost, Prison Break, ect. Even old shows still have amazing writers (just look at Law & Order). I think story is really what the movies are lacking and what TV has found. It just goes to show you that money doesn't mean quality. The TV shows are made at a fraction of what movies are and the quality of the TV shows writing is miles ahead of 99% of the movies released. Its sad when I find myself rather wanting to stay in and watch TV then the newest Hollywood has to offer.
Oh and a sort of new show I suggest everyone in the US and Canada watch (will more then likely have to download it) is "Hustle". It is a British show made by the BBC, this thing oozes style and has some of the best writing I have seen in years in movies or TV. They are playing the first and second series back to back on AMC in the US, but Canada gets the shaft and the only way for us to see it is to download, but it is well worth it.

Well its crucial to have Racism in every scene possible in the movie, Crash sole purpose alone was to set Races in focus and how they affect each other in given situations, now what really surprised me with Crash, was the unexpected twists throughout the whole movie, you know you start getting the idea of how a movie will end, What person is going to die who is going to kill them etc. But Crash turned unexpectely and surprised me positive.

If the Machinist was 2005 it would be on my list too (it's 2004 though)
In regards to Crash: Have you ever watched lock stock and two smoking barrels? There's nothing wrong with intertwining the characters... but to each his own.

Right, the machinist was indeed 2004. Got confused when i saw it was only released in the theatres in belgium in mid 2005.
Crash wasn't bad either, but you have to know from the beginning it's a movie about racism and morality, if that takes you by surprise, i don't really think you can enjoy it.
