Finally giving this a whirl I was always a bit why bother when there is POE. I'm level 38... i don't know what it is about this game, it just feels a bit boring? too many passive skills? no decent Act bosses imo..

Oh and the worst decision ever in an ARPG > level scaling!?

go back to an early part of the game > yep monsters spawn at times 10 levels above my character.. i honestly cannot believe this level scaling design decision. So I grind for several hours and min/max a build only to have all of that a waste of time becuase i'll level scale the monsters 40% above your char level..

I must be close to finishing this thing... i just want to it end Laughing

Yep, that's pretty much the same problem I have with it.

Way too many passive skills, and the entire game, from start to finish, is just one big slog of grey grim that all feels the same. You can never really tell where one act ends and another begins.

I like interesting active skills and the map/acts being split up into well defined (and very different) places. Titan Quest had a whole bunch of interesting Greek mythos to draw on to make it feel alive. Grim Dawn, sadly, has none of that. Can't remember a single NPC or interesting quest. They were all generic as all hell.

I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

I bought this game a couple of days ago. I really love the graphics, wow, these are some really talented artists!

But the game.. why is it so easy (hard-veteran)? Every enemy apart from bosses dies from one hit, perhaps 2-3 for a few. For hours now (8?) there's no increase in difficulty. I've never died, not even close. I think i've needed to drink a potion maybe 3 times. I just hit level 20.

Is it true that it becomes hard at level 50? What is the idea if so (if there is one)?

Should i play on the most difficult, or is that mostly just annoying / more time consuming? Do people normally play on hardest? It would kind of suck to have to change difficulty to something else later on, i'm not a fan of that.

I'm not even sure i would call this an Action RPG? it's way more similar to a shoot em up (though shoot em ups can be quite hard). Shoot em up + loot simulator is what i'd call this. Maybe it changes but i'm getting a bit bored.

Edit: ohh now i have a really "interesting" bug.. i can't click on anything in the menu, not even "start". I can move the cursor but nothing responds. I did just play the game at my parents place where i have a PC.. i guess this introduced a bug with the cloud saving or something?? I tried logging out / logging in of windows/steam.. still the same bug. Well i guess we're done here Laughing

A lot depends on the build. There are builds that makes the game easy almost always but the game can get harder when you piss of factions so the nemesis enemy will spawn.
But overall it's rather rare to be killed by your regular mobs. Of course you can fuck up resistances and get instagibbed on higher levels or one-two hit killed.

And I didn't find it any easier than Diablo III.

Never tried Diablo 3. I liked Diablo 1-2 when they were new, but this is not like those games at all.

What's a good action RPG which is hard (preferably with rather dark atmosphere), wouldn't mind quite a bit of dungeon crawling, and perhaps at least a bit of an attempt of going for a story that you care for? Would be good if it can be played in more recent resolutions...

There is none. All aRPG games these days are easy and even more as you progress. You have to handicap yourself by running low-level gear if you want some challenge.

Path of Exile is a decent challenge if you play SSF.

The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don’t always spoil the good things and make them unimportant.

If you are experienced with ARPGs then you should start Grim Dawn on veteran difficulty. Maximum level is 100 btw. Game difficulty goes up on Elite (I guess that's around level 50) and of course the latest difficulty setting Ultimate. There are also rogue dungeons which you can try, first available should be Steps of Torment in Act II.

I play on veteran and it's easier than games who has "i only want the story"-setting. Why even name it "veteran" when it's HARD to die?

The only recent ARPG which i've played and which is really good is Dark Souls. It's action RPG'ing done right. It does not have much of a story, but the fighting, wow, so great, same with overall atmosphere - this is my Diablo 3.

Soldier. Isn't everything ranged / spell based in this game though? I've never seen a video where it doesnt look like a Japanese shoot em up. My character shoots some kind of wave from his sword, it kills everything in its path with one click. Bosses i have to click 10 times (wow, what an effort).

(edit: actually i've switched to gamepad, game got better and even more shot em up-like,so its button presses not "clicks" Wink )

I'm actually a bit shocked at its genericness. Wasn't this a kickstarter project? Those projects are usually done to appeal to a rather hardcore crowd (my guess would have been old fans of the Diablo games?). ...and what they got was Candy Crush of Action RPG's, still everyone seems to be raving about how good it is (graphics are great sure, but the rest?)

I'm melee, it's still ranged. I was expecting that after seeing videos, i was not even shocked "oh, there! now the shooting begins." Took perhaps 10 minutes to get there though! Laughing

In that video, the Captain America shield throw and the spinning sword attack both look very similar to some powers from Marvel Heroes. Kind of makes me wish that game was still around just to play some of my favorite heroes again.

  • A New Class Mastery - smite your foes with a divine new mastery: the Oathkeeper, which can be combined with the other Masteries, raising the total number of combinations to a staggering 36!

  • A Massive Story Chapter - Journey beyond the remnants of the Erulan Empire to dangerous new lands teeming with forbidden secrets. Battle alongside the Witch God cults to vanquish the rising threat of a forgotten god.
  • New Environments - Discover foreboding deserts, explore lush oases, survive the heat of a land ravaged by a god’s burning rage, witness the wonders of the Eldritch Realm itself.
  • Difficulty Merits - Embrace new challenges by starting the game on Elite or Ultimate difficulty from the very beginning by purchasing Difficulty Merits for your new characters!
  • Transmutation - Visit the Inventor to reroll your duplicate Set Items to create new Set Pieces from the same set or entirely different sets.
  • Four Factions - Align yourself with one of the three Witch God cult Factions and face off against Eldritch Horrors serving a forgotten power.
  • 9 Constellations - Unleash the powers of forgotten gods with 9 new Devotion Constellations that offer even more ways to traverse Grim Dawn’s massive celestial tapestry.
  • Collect Hundreds of New Items - Dozens of new Monster Infrequents and Hundreds of Epic and Legendary items are waiting to be added to your collection, including sets exclusive to the games Roguelike dungeon and the Shattered Realm!

  • New Nemesis and Super Bosses - The Eldritch Realm houses terrors beyond imagining. Face off against its nemesis for unique loot. Uncover the secrets of the Korvan Basin and unleash a supremely powerful foe.

New Mastery
A major highlight of the expansion is the introduction of another playstyle to Grim Dawns masteries: the zealous Oathkeeper! Combine it with the eight other masteries for 36 possible combinations!
    Oathkeeper
Whether they hail from the Temple of Menhir, or offer their souls to the Witch Gods, all Oathkeepers have two things in common: unflinching loyalty and zealous fury. Oathkeepers are the guardians of sacred tombs, keepers of the faithful and ardent enforcers of celestial will. They do not merely hide behind a shield or their divine powers; to Oathkeepers, these are weapons upon which they shall spill the blood of the unworthy and exact their righteous wrath.

New Features
The expansion brings many exciting changes to the game, the biggest of which are certain to be the new game mode where you will test the limits of your skills and the introduction of a new type of Augments which bolster your playstyles with awesome movement abilities.

  • Shattered Realm
The Shattered Realm is unlike anything mankind has ever witnessed, teeming with wealth and power beyond imagining, but also dangers not unlike those that you face even now on Cairn. Whatever entity crafted this realm, it seems it has long vanished and, with its absence, the reality crumbles.
  • Rune Augments
A new addition to the standard Faction Faction Augments, Rune Augments are a special category of enchantments that is applied exclusively to Medals. With these runes, you will gain new abilities that allow your character to cover distances across the battlefield.
Unlike standard Augments, Rune Augments can drop as loot in the form of blueprints, so that you can craft them for all your characters. The most powerful Rune blueprints are found only in the Shattered Realm!
  • Difficulty Merits
If youve unlocked Elite or Ultimate difficulty, be sure to stop by the vendor in the Forgotten Gods content in order to purchase the new Champions and Saviors Merits. These items, when used on your other characters, immediately unlock the respective difficulties, allowing you to tackle the extra challenge (and lucrative rewards) from the very beginning.
When you use a merit, the character immediately receives all Skill and Attribute point rewards from the previous difficulties, as if they had completed the respective quests. In addition, they will unlock all Inventory Bags and all Riftgates on those difficulties.
Need Devotion Points? Fear not. Forgotten Gods features additional Devotion Shrines on all difficulties, so you can get to the maximum of 55 on Ultimate difficulty without ever stepping foot in Normal or Elite.
  • Challenge Areas
Challenge Areas unify the difficulty scaling mechanics across the game and bring features you’ve become accustomed to in the Crucible DLC into the Main Campaign. Many optional areas have an increased difficulty and Mutators. To compensate for this increase in challenge, these areas also have significantly improved drop rates, particularly for items of Rare quality.
Roguelike Dungeons are a step up in challenge, particularly on Ultimate difficulty, with two to three Mutators active. In return, the final chest of each roguelike dungeon always attempts to drop at least two Epic quality or higher items (one guaranteed to be Legendary) on Ultimate difficulty, on top of the significantly increased Rare quality drop rates across the entire dungeon.
In addition, each of the four Roguelike Dungeons also have a chance to drop a piece of a unique item set that appears nowhere else in the game, as a mark of your prowess in conquering these treacherous areas on Ultimate difficulty.

Bought the older xpac when it was on sale. I still don't understand why people like this game. I mean it's great that they do, but it sucks for me because I'm itching to play a Diablo game, and this isn't it. I have 23 hours on this game according to Steam, but I've yet to make it past Act 1 since I keep dropping it over the years and restarting.

This is more of a spiritual sequel after Titan Quest so well they are both hack & slash but I don't think it holds much against Diablo which well first game is more rogue like and then the second I guess is a more fleshed out isometric RPG but they removed some of the persistent elements whereas the third is a loot driven game though the patches would change things quite extensively and I think the console version is still considered a cut above the PC one last I read up on the state of things though that was some years back.

That said Titan Quest and Grim Dawn here certainly have similarities but they are also fairly different in how they approach the genre.

Haven't played the game in ages though, been waiting on patches and content to come out and well here's the content and now it sounds like more patches are going to be needed not too surprising.

EDIT: Let's see the lengthy development process and troubles and team and budget size has done their thing too since ~2011 or 2012 when it opened up for backer investment and the genre ha seen some resurgence though it's still a bit more niche over what's popular these days.

I think even Diablo 3 felt that, ending work on the second expansion pack and doing something with the assets they had.
