Looking at the downloading folder it appears to be primarily patching the game's UPKs. I suspect this has nothing to do with performance, and is instead related to a modding problem - namely that they stripped out a lot of base game content from the WOTC UPKs, which causes all sorts of problems for mods because the game can't handle their calls to content only found in the base game UPKs. While they have updated the EXE and fixed some bugs, but don't be surprised if performance, at least in terms of load times, actually decreases.

Hey guys, I've just started playing this game again, straight up with the War of the Chosen expansion. First of all, is it recommended to play the base game first? Second, what mods are must-have (apart from The Long War, which I'll save up for another playthrough)?

Thanks, mate, I'll check the mods you mentioned. I'm not really interested in cosmetic mods atm, but QOL mods seem quite a must indeed.
I didn't know TLW2 wasn't as good as the first one. I did play and liked it back then. WOTC does indeed seem sooo over the top, but I'll give it some more time.
There is a mod that slows down/eliminates the "Doomsday Clock" as well (a.k.a. the Avatar project), right?
Btw, now I remember what I didn't like about the game the first time I played it: there's so much going on that you can't complete an important scanning/relay building operation. Plus there's the constant threat of both the Chosen and the Avatar. This seems a bit too much at first.

There's an option in the advanced campaign options (second wave, basically) when you start the game to double the Avatar timer, but it's too late for that if you are already playing. There are lots of mods that change it though, just do a search and you'll turn them up.
Yeah the early game is the most difficult, especially if you are in a region with a Chosen whose mechanics you struggle with. Once you get on to mag weapons/plated armour things should be a lot easier.
As to LW2, I can only speak to my own experience. There were some things I liked, but overall I eventually found it tiresome with the way the whole infiltration thing worked.

Yeah there have been rumours for ages that there is another DLC coming. It seems like it would be diminishing returns at this point though. I'd think they'd want to move on to a full X3 (probably running on UE4).

Eh, I would prefer Xcom 3. I love X2/WotC but playing through the same story for the THIRD time? I think I'll pass. Unless they'll surprise me and this time around this will have some separate story from the base game.

I doubt we will see XCOM 3 anytime soon.
XCOM 2 still feels fresh enough with the expanions.

also xcom 2 hasnt seen a huge discount yet, i havent seen a price below the huge dicount i got at some cd key shop at launch (40% off) . So another dlc makes perfect sence for them to discount 50-75% off, get the last people in to buy it and blast a few more dlcs to squeeze the newcomers for more cash

Heh yeah that is dodgy for sure. I think the historical low from legit key sellers is around US$10.50/€11.

Currently playing for the second time and my feelings are that there's have been some nice improvements overall. The most notorious are:
- A more variety of missions. So far, they didn't repeat a single one, which is very nice.
- The chosen seems to be more fast in upgrades and completing dark events, which is nice for the "oh shit" feeling.
- Tons of berserkers in the missions. (I've complained earlier that in my fist play trough there appeared only one!!).
- Some random research options that I didn't have in my first play.
- Perhaps more aggressive and clever AI, which is a good thing.
Overal, game has aged good! (Seems usual for the firaxis games).

yeah i don't like that its timed, its a very desperate thing you do in games when you're totally out of ideas, last resort type of thing to add. Not a fan of the mind control either, also tired and sloppy mechanic, it could be used for a game where the level is small and the numbers of enemies has to be very limited, then you could spice it up like that.
I put in some mods that supposedly helps, but i don't know, i find it immensely difficult due to the unpredictable nature of the game, it's so unpredictable that the strategy element is out of the door completely. But again, i'm new so..
edit: also this is a tutorial mission (started a new game without the tutorial and this mission is not there) - this was the second mission you get when you get to the base. how the hell can they make it this difficult, it's also not teaching you anything, it gives you absolutely no advice, it just crushes you again and again until you give up. The first real mission in the game is very easy in comparison and a better "tutorial" mission.

I get the feeling that there's not a lot of strategy to this game at all, that it's mostly about having a ton of luck, am i wrong? There also seems to be no difference playing on normal or on rookie, all my characters die just the same
Taking cover is essential of course. I use overwatch if i have a character which for example is on high ground and in good cover. All in all this matters very little when there's a total of 10+ enemies who can take a beating just as good as my 4 characters + my characters gets mind controlled all the time.
Maybe i did something wrong from the start, are the 2 characters in the tutorial missions "supposed" to die, or can you play in a way where they survive?

You have to learn the gimmicks.
I found WotC easier than the vanilla game because I knew the gimmicks and I beat it on Commander.
The new factions, orders, skill trees make the add on easier. I also killed 2/3 of the Chosen with Magnetic weapons because I forgot the tech tree unlocks and stalled some research (unnecessarily so) because I didn't want to fight more problematic enemies like Codex.
When you defeat a Chosen you get their gear which is pretty OP, killing the DLC rulers also gives you pretty sweat stuff and the game becomes easier.
Don't give up, play some missions, level up the soldiers, learn their skills and get your perfect squad. When you balance your squad the game becomes easier and less reliant on luck.
Most importantly - the cover system. It's really unbalanced, if you can never use partial - half shield cover. In 90% of cases you will get hit.
Use the advantage of stealth and plan your first ambush but never get in between two enemy squads. Take advantage of your invisible units like Reaper or Ranger (after upgrades) and scout the map. Sniper on higher soldier level can be a god on battlefield.
You will get the new battle experience /intelligence points that will enable you to buy additional skills for the soldiers from another classes or blocked skill from the skill tree.
The most irritating new thing will be the Lost, the zombies is a BS mechanic with low level team. They will swarm you and make your life miserable (especially that they spawn indefinitely) until you unlock some skills that will for example enable you to take consecutive shots after scoring a kill.
As goes for the hated timed missions. They featured it because in the first XCOM and its limited AI, luring out the enemies and retreating than overwatching was a valid strategy for most of the campaign.
This way in the sequel the devs force you to be more proactive.
I know all of it is not much of an advice but just learn the game by playing. You will be save scumming some missions anyway

Yes i guess so. Not sure it's worth it, i bet the game is perhaps slightly more fun once you begin to upgrade, but i dont know, i get the feeling that its a game that just constantly is going to piss me off.
