Quote: | Fresh off of critical favorite The Leftovers, Damon Lindelof is in talks for a potential Watchmen TV series for HBO. Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the project is in the early development stages. An official deal is not yet in place. Representatives for HBO and producers Warner Bros. Television declined comment.
Lindelof originally read the comics as a kid in the 1980s and has said that the series continues to influence his work. "From the flashbacks to the nonlinear storytelling to the deeply flawed heroes, these are all elements that I try to put into everything I write," he told CBR in 2009 ahead of the feature film take. He's read Watchmen multiple times and, at the time, praised director Zack Snyder's film. "It's the most married-to-the-original-text version of Watchmen that could've been made," he told the Observer. "I want to keep it sort of insular," he said, referring to the multiple translations that have come from trying to translate the source material. "It's OK with me if people don't understand it because they don't deserve to understand it." |
Given how brilliant The Leftovers was, I will remain cautiously optimistic.
At least it can't be worse than the Snyderp trash from 2009

I don't usually watch superhero TV shows, but this odd combo would intrigue me. The first reason is obviously HBO, and then there's Lindelof, whom after The Leftovers has achieved redemption as far as I'm concerned. Well not exactly a full redemption, just a temporary one..till the next giant fuck up, but still!
(I remember that I enjoyed 2009's Watchmen for what it was, but then again, it's the perspective of someone who didn't even know who the Watchmen were in the first place, hence not the most valuable one xD)

Hmm... I don't know if it is a good idea to do a TV series based on Watchmen. It's pretty closed story and doing something new with the characters is in my opinion a bad option. Just do a new IP or do something that wasn't adapted.
Or do Invincible so Kirkman could jack off more.
Or something from Jodorowsky like Metabarons or Technopriest series. It would greatly fit in the fucked up series like Legion or American Gods.
EDIT: Or The Boys - but good luck with that.

+1.. One of the best films about superderps. It's a bit too long though
PS HBO... ...making Watchmen instead of the Witcher..

As someone that had no idea about this IP before, I liked the movie as well. The games were somewhat enjoyable for me too. Can't say I want this show, but I'm not opposed to it either.

Loved the 2009 Watchmen movie especially considering the difficulty adapting the source material which was.. silly. Thank gawd they didn't use that OTHER ending but rather a more rational one.

He achieved redemption not in the way that he gave us what we wanted (which we didnt get in Lost), but by not giving it to us once again and this time even making us accept and enjoy it that way.
I don't know how I feel...satisfied? Raped? Confused? |
Haha yeah, that sums it up perfectly. I'd say all three feelings were (and still are) involved in equal measure, which is a scary though. It could mean..that we've developed a Stockholm Syndrome-like affection for him

Yes 2009's Watchmen was fantastic. Absolutely no clue what was wrong considering it ended better than the source material it was based off of!

Watchmen was a great movie, if you had enough time (the director's cut is 180 minutes, I think). It's very faithful to the books, apart from the ending. Faithful enough to make a series quite unnecessary, I think.

Movie was awful and had no depth. It borrowed a few moments from the comic books that would look cool but nothing was tied together. A show would be better as this is something that need the character development Snyder's missed.

Just binged season 2 of preacher and since I never followed the comics the show is pretty sweet.
This is after the events of watchmen.
The cast are the watchmen watching the heroes as the outlaws they are. Think powers, but with a budget.

Strange. I thought it'd make more sense to place this show way before the movie, not after.
