Finished it, brilliant game from start to finish. I really liked all of the characters, excellent voice acting also. Atreus is probably the best side character in any game I've played. My biggest complaint would be the lack of gods, but great things are to come in the sequel
I've watched some interviews and it seems originally they had more gods in here but decided to instead dedicate this game to the father-son story. Definitely worked for me.
with all the things hinted at in this game I can't wait to see where this goes!

I’m quite annoyed that they have 3 inaccessible realms. Surely they will be part of some future DLC rather than having to wait years for the sequel.
director went on record multiple times saying theres no plans for any DLC and they went back and forth on how to communicate that those realms are not saved for DLC. those areas just won't be accessible, period.
My guess is you'll return here in the sequels and they wanted to keep it consistent and logical. can't have a midgard 9 realm travel room and then just omit the gates for some games when it's always the same place.

I finished it (I'm close to 100% completion as well). The story is great, I loved it. The writing is exceptional at times, perfectly blending emotional and epic moments. There is a lot of well written lore with enough mystery to it, working as a great set up for the sequels.
The combat is a bit disappointing. I'm happy is not the power trip of the previous games, leaning towards a more tactical approach. But it can feel lackluster and quite repetitive. The enemy's variety is limited and bosses are a rare sight. I'm not a fan of stopping frames when hitting targets (this mechanic should die already). However, the most annoying thing must be the balancing, which turns to ridiculous levels on the highest difficulty. Enemies that are 2 levels higher can one shot Kratos, the god of war. There are a few annoying technicalities as well, like poorly chosen controls for combos, the camera going haywire or the targeting system relying on proximity rather than straight line of sight. On the good side, the combat can be quite spectacular, ramping up the fun factor.
I think the biggest plus for the gameplay is the metroidvanian approach. It creates this sense of progression while giving an incentive to explore the world.
The graphics are good. The models are high quality and well animated, while the combat makes good use of particle effects and physics. But it's nothing sensational like some publications would make the readers believe. I guess for consoles this is on the higher end of things, but that's pretty much it.
Overall, God of War is a solid game with a story that's worth experiencing and I'm actually looking forward for the sequels.
I am not saying it's a perfect 10, no game is, but I definitely welcome more games going this way, we have too many soulless open world games nowadays and it's getting tiring.
Either way, it does everything better than the old GoW games.
Linear? To some extent, but still far more open than old GoW.
Combat repetitive? I don't feel that way, but you gotta admit that it still offers alot more depth than the simplistic one combo crap of old GoW.
I don't understand why improving upon everything from the previous games isn't a good thing,
and no, the old combat wasn't even deep back then, it always felt like a very shallow DMC knockoff but had the fun gore and tits to make up for it.

From Santa Monica Studio and creative director Cory Barlog comes a new
beginning for one of gaming's most recognizable icons. Living as a man
outside the shadow of the gods, Kratos must adapt to unfamiliar lands,
unexpected threats, and a second chance at being a father. Together with his
son Atreus, the pair will venture into the brutal Norse wilds and fight to
fulfill a deeply personal quest.
Bold New Beginning - His vengeance against the Gods of Olympus years
behind him, Kratos now lives as a man in the realm of Norse Gods and
monsters. It is in this harsh, unforgiving world that he must fight to
survive. And teach his son to do the same. This startling reimagining of God
of War deconstructs the core elements that defined the series-satisfying
combat breathtaking scale and a powerful narrative-and fuses them anew.
A Second Chance - Kratos is a father again. As mentor and protector to
Atreus, a son determined to earn his respect, he is forced to deal with and
control the rage that has long defined him while out in a very dangerous
world with his son.
A Darker, More Elemental World - From the marble and columns of ornate
Olympus to the gritty forests, mountains, and caves of Pre-Viking Norse lore,
this is a distinctly new realm with its own pantheon of creatures, monsters,
and gods. With an added emphasis on discovery and exploration, the world will
draw players in to explore God of War's breathtakingly threatening
landscape-by far the largest in the franchise.
Vicious, Physical Combat - With an over the shoulder free camera that
brings the player closer to the action than ever before, fights in God of War
mirror the pantheon of Norse creatures Kratos will face: grand, gritty, and
grueling. A new main weapon and new abilities retain the defining spirit of
God of War while presenting a vision of violent conflict that forges new
ground in the genre.

Holy crap this game. I haven't been drawn to a game like this since TW3. Side quests and other activities aren't a nuissance at all, rowing the boat is a pleasure because there's stories that don't repeat themselves, then there's the conversations between Mimir and Atreus, with Kratos ocassionally tipping in. Fantastic.
While witcher 3 is a great game, it just cant beat focused storytelling like this when its good. Witcher while its fantastic is too spaced out by being so large and having a billion activities on the side.
A lot of god of war movement lately from sony. Maybe they are checking ground for the sequel (would love it)
