hey, thinking of finally building a machine i can be really be happy about and would like some help
This machine will be built from scratch with the single exception of some 2 TB HDD which ill take over from my current i7 2600k + R9 390 built.
use cases:- Gaming on a 60Hz 4K TV, but surely not rendering at that resolution. Perhaps even 1080p only.
- lots of movies/series watching with madvr at 4K, which can utilize much of high end gpus actually
- some high thread cpu stuff (e.g. acoustic simulations) - those can take hours
- experimenting with neural networks (potentially saturates any gpu) - the faster the better really for quick iterations
Desires: fast cpu, fast gpu, 32 GB ram, fast SSD for programs + games at least
I will overclock everything useful. Delidding might be an option, but I really dont like the thought of it
Wanted to go ryzen, but I think I will likely not utilize the cores enough s.t. it will help and instead start whining when I reach bottlenecks in gaming
currently on my list:
Intel i7 8700k ~ 343€
G.Skill TridentZ 3200 CL14 2 x 16 GB ~ 428€
Nvidia GTX 1080 TI - EVGA FTW3 Gaming ~ 796€
ASRock Z370 Taichi ~ 203€
Samsung 970 EVO 1TB ~ 318€
Stuff im not too sure about:
Be Quiet! BN234 E10-CM-500W Straight Power "Modular" ~ 80€
Scythe SCFM-1000 Fuma ~ 50€
Fractal Design Define R6 Black ~ 115€
I have been recommended the R6, but according to gamersnexus, this case does not cool gpus well due to its solid front (with side vents), which is kind of a bummer tbh.
The case needs to be practical, which imo means large enough to work well with. Cooling performance is my only concern with the R6.
total ~ 2381€
Clearly I wasnt too careful about price and the price itself is fine, if it makes sense.
Any questions? Any help is appreciated

Maybe ryzen 2 might be an option, their main issue for me was the weaker single thread performance for old unoptimized crap game engines (but that I love to play ) and that is supposed to be improved this time around, right?
Can't wait a few more months to see if the 1080ti lowers in price/1180?

But seriously, choose a slightly more powerful PSU (600W or 650W) and most importantly a platinum (or whatever's beyond gold ) rated one regarding power efficiency.

solid build, but if you dont need it right now i would wait till mid september (if the nvidia rumors are true)
8700k is a good choice, though a ryzen would be ok too
the case is fine, have it since a few months. temps of the gpu arent higher compared to my old big tower
psu is outdated, if you wanna go for be quiet get the be quiet! Straight Power 11 550W (got that too, together with the case a few months ago) or the Seasonic Focus Plus Gold 550W
seasonic is on the same level. 500w is more than enough, that system listed above wouldnt pull more than ~300w from the wall at 100% usage. if gold or platinum rated doenst matter

new intel cpus (without "toothpaste") and also new nvidia cards will be out in the next 2-3 months. just wait for it. i know you can always wait longer to buy new stuff since there is always something new coming out but this time it's worth to wait a few more months.
also i don't know what these guys at gamernexus smoke but the r6 is cooling just as good as the r5.
i got one fan in the front and one in the back, (be quiet silent wings 3) my case is silent and everything is cooled properly, even at the current room temperatures 30-37°.
my temps in my r5 case at the current room temperature (32°):
- delidded 6700k @4.2 ghz with liquid metal which is cooled with a be quiet dark rock pro 3
idle: 36-37° load: in gaming around 55° in cpu stress test max 60°
- 970 gtx, which is passive cooled until 63° or so, like all the newer nvidia cards.
idle: 55-56° load: 65-75°
if you want your case to be silent go all in for be quiet.
their power supplies are very good while you can't hear them.
same for their case fans and of course the cpu fans.
dark rock pro 3 was a little bit hard to mount on the board but i think this got better with dark rock pro 4.
if you don't care about silence go for a noctua cpu coolers. they are little bit better like the be quiet dark rock pro, but are much much louder.

In this case, I'd say waiting for the new stuff is pretty valid.
Don't skimp on the PSU though.

i would be with you on it if i knew the rumors to be true. Ill just wait for the gpus and hopefully by then we have clarification
on the fractal design matter. GN had a similar statement about the R5. It is a rather quiet case whereas the fractal meshify cools better for example

Not a good moment to be buying a gpu. Prices are slowly normalizing and Nvidias 1180 (2080) are around the corner. Intel is getting coffeelake refresh on the road but not before Q4, and I‘d just wait for them reviews.
With the cash you are willing to spend. Waiting a few months would be a good move.

@kc
you seem to consider gaming only. the i7 will be faster than an i5 and 16gb isnt enough for me. In fact i would like much more than 32gb but the price is just crazy
@all
i will wait for new gpus and then reassess the situation as i agree with you all. It needs to make some sense
how do you guys choose ram btw?

I chose the Ram that has Samsung B-Die to be safe on having both average-good timings and Speed.
The first Ryzen gen has been a bit picky on Ram, but I can run 3333 Mhz on CL14 with a few minor adjustements to timings stable. Its enough for me.
Intel people can use even faster Ram I suppose.

i will look into that thx
@kc
i will get a new display, but it will be a simple 60hz oled.
you reminded me of another problem though. will nvidia ever support freesync including hdmi 2.1 vfr?

Nvidia does not plan to support freesync. It will not happen. Sadly.
Also there are no oled monitors and none are coming or being developed. There was 1 very expensive 30inch dell oled which failed and they dont sell it anymore since it had image retention.
Same with lg oled tvs. These are terrible for pc usage. The picture is amazing but all static elements will burn into the display. Oled is only good for all time changing picture.

you are overstating the problem, that much is safe to say
id be surprised if i get problems with an lg oled panel, as they are significantly more resistant than my plasma. Plus im far from the first to use one as a monitor. No guarantees though of course

But it's a fact. This is the exact reason why we do not have oled monitors.
Don't know how burnin compares oled vs plasma.

Aren't OLED and Plasma the two common display technologies with burn-in issues as opposed to the common LED-LCD-tech that is used in various configurations?
