1995, Kamurocho… Kazuma Kiryu, the Dragon of Dojima, takes the fall for the murder of a crime boss to protect his sworn brother, Akira Nishikiyama, and his childhood friend, Yumi.
2005… Akira Nishikiyama has become a changed man. Yumi is nowhere to be found. Ten billion yen has gone missing from the Tojo Clan's coffers, putting the organization on the brink of civil war. And Kazuma Kiryu is released from prison to a world he no longer recognizes.
With enhanced gameplay, an expanded cinematic story, the return of the battle styles from Yakuza 0, more nightlife spots, and re-recorded audio by the series cast, Yakuza Kiwami is the ultimate and most “extreme” version of the original vision of the series, now optimised for PC with 4K resolutions, uncapped framerates, customisable controls and ultra-widescreen support.
The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don’t always spoil the good things and make them unimportant.
Wait, which Yakuza Part is this from the console world? Zero? Is this a "PC Remaster" Edition?
Kiwami is 2016's Remake of 2005's Yakuza 1
0 is 2015's prequel to it
Kiwami 2 is remake of 2006's Yakuza 2 and releasing this year to PS4
Remakes of 3-5 are planned for upcoming years
6 released on PS4 few months ago
+ they just announced PS4 release of spinoff Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise
You can play 0 first. Otherwise they'd release Kiwami first i'd think. Well, i started out with 0 and had absolutely no issues with how the story went for the next games.
A Yakuza 0 and Yakuza Kiwami PC release date has been confirmed, with the former launching on PC on August 1, 2018 with the latter is still to be determined.
Should I play 0 or 1 first?
Is the story of 0 told in a way that assumes you know 1 beforehand?
0 is the prequel so play that first. Problem with that though is the technical difference between 0 and kiwami. Kiwami is a remake but 0 feels like a completely new game. So playing kiwami after 0 will feel like you're going back in time.

I think you should know who the characters are before you play 0 as some of the quest in there reference characters you will meet in the older games, just to give it more impact.
Also 0 has much more content than Kiwami since Kiwami is a remake (with some 0 features), so you might feel somewhat limited coming from 0 to Kiwami.
Plus, it makes Majima's story work better. Failing that just youtube some Majima videos from Yakuza 1 and up.
Will be fun to see more Yakuza, seems 0 is the better of these two (Due to being a newer game, this here is Yakuza 1 remade.) but it's interesting to follow the story via these remakes if they'll continue the PC ports which I hope they will.
And then the other games should be using the newer engine from Yakuza 6 although I was really impressed by what 0 already was capable of particularly with the detail found in the cinematics.
(Subtle eye and mouth movements for example, not a easy thing to pull off.)

Good to hear it's closer to release.
Newer has nothing to do with it. In my opinion, 0 was the best of them all
