i can suspend disbelief for an armed group taking over a county in the US with the government not putting a stop to it, but the whole bit where in order to progress the story you go and meet face to face with the boss of an area for a little chat and they let you go is just fucking retarded.

This kidnapping crap sounds terrible. Who in their right mind thought it was a good idea to just up and about hijack the player controls mid-mission and transport them to the boss lair not one but 10 times!!!?

Being kidnapped repeatedly feels pretty damn silly, but at the very least I haven't found myself kidnapped in the middle of a mission so far.
The way it's been going on is that I got warnings ("You've been marked" "You've been blessed") and I then had a chance to delay being kidnapped. You won't be able to progress the main story until you DO get kidnapped, and they'll keep trying again and again until they succeed, but it was possible to fight back if I wanted to wait.
Actually they cheat. I killed 2 groups of archers that were coming for me, and after that I was moving away when suddenly, without being detected, I hear an arrow and fell unconscious.
Haven't had archers yet, but when they sent jeeps after me, I could just kill those dudes before I got shot and I'd be fine. Music calmed down and I'd be in the clear. They'd send another jeep as soon as I fast traveled, and I imagine they'd send another jeep without fast travel if I just waited long enough. But I killed maybe 4-5 jeeps like this before I decided to move along with the story.
John sends those jeeps with bliss bullets, one hit and you're out, it's possible to defend against at least but not easy.
Faith just pops you with her horrible mouth breath ("Bliss" my arse.) but the entire region is hippie paradise (Seriously, look at the water.) so no surprises everyone's all fucked up.
That third dude has ninja archers, you can fight back but suddenly there's just going to be this 'TWANG!' sound and you'll be butt-end of all the arrow jokes in the area after that.
And then papa Seed himself is secure (somehow) in a flimsy wooden church despite everyone in the area having enough firepower for at least three or four more world wars not to mention missiles, rockets and improvised explosives plus more than enough fire.

So they found me in the hidden base they have unsuccessfully been able to find, talking to the guy they are so desperately trying to kill, only to kidnap me so they can set up an elaborate plot to do exactly the same thing.

Actually the gameplay itself isn't bad, i'm actually enjoying it more than FC4. That got tedious with the tower bullshit.
But the story is so pretentious. I liberated 2 areas and i really have no idea what's the point of the whole story. The main bad guy had potential, especially at the start, but he just pales in comparison to Pagan and Vaas.
