Star Wars: The Last Jedi - 7.5/10

Probably my third favorite SW film after 4 and 5. I don't understand why people say it's un-SW, it felt like SW to me?? Confused I wish it had more, or at least a really good one, lightsaber fights though.

Star Wars The Last Jedi - 8/10

I am not a big fan of the series. I saw movies few times, here and there (episode two and three only once) in past 20 years. So it was really enjoyable movie for me.

Because I dont mind what skywalker did, what kylo ren did, how that cgi guy ended up, how leia pulled of a superman resurrection...

Even the runtime didnt felt that long. So yeah, I enjoyed this movie.

Good idea, bad execution. The last „fight” was laughable, suprisingly I hated portman in this, no emotions, maybe just a bad fit.

Annihilation: Shadow of Shimmeryl - 7,5/10

A pleasant surprise, how about that. I was prepared for something borderline corny and Netdull but the atmospheric (almost hallucinogenic) ride tickled me in all the right extraterrestrial rainbow places. The movie manages to be imaginative without being insulting or too absurd, there is actually a second layer with an interesting bigger picture that involves the nature of our existence which I really liked.

There are also flaws in terms of pure logic and some decisions are just..puzzling, but the captivating soundtrack, eerie decaying environments (*dat* magnificent beast Surprised), shiny direction and a damn great Natalie Portman greatly pleased my inner doppelganger. An imperfect but solid effort, unique sci-fi-feels were had. *crawls back into the hole*

Blade Runner 2049

7,5/10

+ Pretty good plot
+ Plenty of movie to watch
+ Some good ideas
+ Lots of references of old

+/- Unlike Blade Runner which was a very tight movie, this movie has a lot of filler. Filler is good if it sets a mood but as I mention below, the misuse or total lack of music at the right time + failing to match the powerful atmosphere of the original means the filler is experienced as filler instead of something more.

+/- The twist was interesting but kind of predictable

- The music in the original was much better executed - they actually added music in the wrong scenes and Vangelis' original score was a million times better than what they made of this. The "dubstep" sound (used in so many movies it seems) didn't "do" it for me.
- They failed at recreating the same atmosphere. They tried to mimic it but the world felt way more distant and far off compared to the first movie where everything felt up close & personal, like you could smell the polluted air

It's a good movie but lacks anything truly memorable.

Also, I didn't realize Gaff was actually the same actor as Adama from Battlestar Galactica.

Murder on the Orient Express

5/10

+ Visually a very good movie to watch in UHD - I love winter movies and I love the Victorian/art deco style so this was great to see

+ Many well known actors

+ Some very entertaining scenes

- Hercule Poirot is a typically American interpretation of the character: a shallow imitation but with added flair which Poirot never had. Having read all the short stories and a dozen Poirot books, the character in the movie was almost unrecognisable and felt more like a parody. Compared to the TV Poirot (David Suchet - who was a very good Poirot), this falls flat despite it being a big budget movie.

- The story is one of the weaker Agatha Christie ones for me because it's extremely convoluted and contains too many coincidences which the movie only made worse. Unlike the book, however, the movie is less capable of explaining them making them stand out more.

I mostly enjoyed watching it despite its flaws but it's not a movie I'd watch a second time, even 10 years from now.

If you've seen the 1974 version, there's really no need to see the 2017 version. It's worse in fact, the older one feels a lot more authentic (with a much better Poirot).

Yeah I heard there was another version. Still, it's not as bad as the remake of the Poseidon Adventure of which the modern version was horribly bad. It's still a decent movie, no glaring mistakes except for the rather poor translation of Poirot himself. I mean, they made the poor guy autistic as hell.

The Shape of Water - 6.5/10
Something didn't click with me. Maybe the open sexuality like masturbation and Michael Shannon's dirty naked ass in a movie that sets itself as a fable. It just lacked something and I can't really put my finger to what it was. Overall watchable movie about loneliness and finding someone special but I dunno.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes 6,5/10
Good movie but there are no real surprises - very predictable. The CGI is pretty weak which is not surprising considering its age so I'm forgiving here.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes 2/10 (unfinished)
Watched it for half an hour and stopped. It was clear what road they were going towards: conflict. Also, whoever thought it was clever to make the monkeys use sign language for ten minutes at a time should have been SHOT. There was very little to keep me hooked so I just gave up. From the synopsis I read after, it all seems rather contrived: setting up the scene to make it easy for the apes to get weapons, creating one ape and one human who are determined to go to war, etc. Lazy writing by the sound of it.

I've never been a fan of these kind of tribal movies. It just all feels so shallow, predictable, boring ... The original Planet of the Apes movies (bar the shitty last one) were entertaining, had imagination and fresh ideas. Here we got a very safe and predictable plot. You KNOW the apes will win out, you KNOW there will be plot points where apes will progress in ways (finding weapons and so on), perhaps largely by accident, you KNOW that mankind will become mostly extinct in the end. The journey towards it should be made extra interesting and imaginative but instead, there's nothing new here. I have NO clue why this gets 7.6 on IMDB.

The Sexual Shape of Water Jesus - 6/10

It took years but finally we know the answer to the question that no one has ever dared to ask, what would happen if Creature from the Black Lagoon was written by Bioware? Perhaps it was better not knowing it xD, the banality and occasional cheese coming from a modern Vice Media's fairy tale didn't make particularly care for any of the characters, the hoped emotional involvement remained in the lagoon.

On the bright side, the very well crafted direction (I enjoyed the nifty editing and use of colors also), photography and convincing acting managed to partially keep the squamous thing afloat *it's something*, despite being easily one of the weakest winrars from Hollyboo's awarding parade as far as I'm concerned. The movie had one big merit though, it made me realize that I really would like Del Toro to direct a hypothetical Bioshock film Very Happy, he would be able to nail it in my opinion, provided that he hires a team of competent non-amphibious writers.

I thought it wasn't that bad, but perhaps it could have used some more exposition to frame the time-era and the characters, so that the relationship is more understandable. I mean, it's not hard to get, but it takes a little jump in suspending the disbelief.
It's no Pan's Labyrinth, by all means. But it deserves more than 6/10
