Dang. Time to buy a new CPU cooler. My Corsair H100i is 10 years old and after I switched out my lowly i5-8400 to the i7-8700K the temps are just crazy. I'm not even overclocking it, I've locked the vcore to 1.2v (if set on Auto in BIOS it will be higher) etc. and the CPU have no problems reaching 85-90 degrees in ~5 seconds of work which makes me stop whatever process that is blasting the CPU. First I'll try to switch the fans. I've currently got two Noctua P12's which have a static speed of a mere 1150 rpms (can't increase speed) which I guess worked well for ancient CPU's like the 2500K/3570K and the 8400. Not this one though.
I've checked, reapplied TIM (MX-5) multiple times, tweaked the mounting screws while checking the temps etc. but I can't really tell if it's the water system itself; (fluid gone bad, pump issues or a clogged radiator) or if I just need better and more powerful fans that can push enough air through the radiator.
thats so horrible to see intel dominating the best bang for ur buck dominating the whole bottem budget range ... like wtf amd, u totally fucked urselves with not offering a new 100 usd am4 variant

i dont want any of this e p pee pee core balony from intel that barely any software supports still and never will just give me my 5-6 gighrz sixcore for gaming ffs
Dang. Time to buy a new CPU cooler. My Corsair H100i is 10 years old and after I switched out my lowly i5-8400 to the i7-8700K the temps are just crazy blablabla...............
After googling and messing about a bit I noticed that the "prongs" on the backplate should be angled backwards more than they were. This new motherboard is slightly thinner than the old one and the mounting screws that went into the backplate-prongs through the motherboard didn't put tension on the backplate (which was actually loose even when the mounting screws were set).
Some careful bending of each prong, adding a soft (and compressible) to each mounting screw sorted out the issue.
A synthetic stress test maxed out all 12 threads and the core-temp maxed out at 81 degrees. Obviously not the most optimal temps but It's still a far cry from the 90-95 degrees I got before (and I stopped the stress test to avoid a thermal shutdown or thermal damage).
I need better radiator fans. I switched out the slow RPM-locked Noctua NF-P12's for my two front case fans which aren't made for CPU cooling (old Gentle Typhoon). Or I may look at an aircooler instead since there are several out there that does a better job than ordinary AIO's like mine.

Arctic P12, best fans you can get for the money, they are almost like very expensive Noctua NF-A12
i doubt it's just the fans. the cooler is 10 years old, just get a new one. not because it's broken or so, because it's not compatible. not only the backplate which you "fixed", but also because of a larger DIE or heatspreader, which just doesn't match your cooler, even tho it looks fine. maybe the pump is not strong enough to push enough water for this kind of cpu or whatever.
just because a cooler was good back then, doesn't mean it's good now, or are there still people rocking their good old zalman coolers on newer cpus?
don't waste your time and money, just buy a good new cooler.
I've been eyeing the EK-AIO Basic 120 (basic = without all that RGB bullshit). It's cheaper than most other competitors in the same class and has good performance.
I've been looking at air coolers as well but my RAM sticks are too close to the CPU socket for optimal cooling:
i wouldn't buy another AIO, in my opinion you got pretty lucky with those 10 years. normaly they die much faster, also they cost more and don't offer anything but better looks.
it won't make much difference if you have to put up the fan a little bit because of ram.
but it's your choice. just don't waste anymore time or money on your old cooler and get something new

I've got the EK-AIO Basic 240 for more than a year now and it's quite good and quiet thus far. So that's a thumbs up from me.
Had a pretty good air cooler before, a Be Quiet Dark Rock 4, but went with an AIO cooler because of the space it freed up around the mobo. Was always terrified of damaging it when I tried releasing the tab on the GPU PCIE slot.
I don't know why but I just ordered a ryzen 5600x. And I had plenty of money, could have gotten even the 5800x3d. Yet i bought a 5600x. Wtf was I thinking ? I know what. Fucking CHEAPSKATE
I think my next "upgrade" will be like the cheapest am4 board that has 4-5 series support that i can find and a 1600-2600x second hand or something and then in a few years, a second hand 5600, i want to stay near 100 eur (40mobo -60 cpu )
currently on a i7 3770k still and only upgrading if its a good second hand deal
recently bought a 25 euro 4 heatpipe skyscraper air cooler , works better then my super expensive noctua similar design and very silent at 700rpm 30% , but i guess thats cause the newer i7s use less power n have less heat then the older ones (i7 920).
a massive recession is coming, pawn shop owners are already seeying it and talking about it. so prices will come tumbling soon hopefully for some good bargains to be had, and this current hardware , can last a decade or more unless microsoft are real dicks.
Got the 5600x + ASUS TUF GAMING B550M-PLUS + 3060ti for a total of 1000 euros. I just didn't want to spend more. Hopefully my old kit 4x4gb ram @2133mhz will work
Got my 5800X3D that replaces my 3600XT and did some Tests with savegames of my own.
This is on 3440x1440 max settings. Granted, Elex 2 and KC:D are badly optimized games and perfect for this CPU. But I did not think I'd have this much of a difference.
And btw. this is still on my first AM4 board, the Gigabyte X370 Gaming K7, which I got for the 1700X way back.

Indeed. Due to its large cache, the 5800X3D is faster than the 5800X in a lot of games. But when applications can’t make use of the cache, the 5800X can be slightly faster due to having a few more mhz. I know this thing is overpriced but its going to be here for at least 3 more years. And I get to keep the rest of my old system for just as long.

hopefully the 5800x3d has a decent pricetag when gpus are back to normal prices. want to upgrade my system, but only changing my 3700x and not the 2070super isnt helpful for me
imho a great way to make my am4 platform last another few years
