The show is based on a non-fiction book by journalist Misha Glenny, which explores the globalisation of organised crime and its rise through the decades.
However, the BBC drama is a fictional story.A couple of the stories from the book have been adapted for the small screen.
Alex Godman, the English-raised son of Russian mafia exiles, has spent his life trying to escape the shadow of their past, building his own legitimate business and forging a life with his girlfriend, Rebecca. But when a murder unearths his family's past, Alex is drawn into the criminal underworld where he must confront his values to protect those he loves.
Despite a kinda silly (its meaning is explained in the show) title, it's actually a good tv series. I didn't expect anything good from it, to say the least, so I was pleasantly surprised.
It's a bit slow at times but, eventually, it comes to a satisfying ending.
Nice story, good actors, especially the actor playing the main antagonist, however, James Norton's acting was a bit wooden, although some might say it was subtle. A proper Russian speech (the show has Russian speaking actors) was a nice bonus.
I liked the way they depicted FSB (former KGB) relationship with the Russian mafia. It was authentic, although a bit outdated. Nowadays, FSB IS mafia.
McMafia is to return. After much agonising, the BBC One drama series, which ran at the start of last year, is to get a second series. But with some considerable changes. The story, initially based around a British-based, exiled Russian family whose son, played by the suave James Norton, was decidedly anglicised, is moving to the US. More than likely because the BBC’s co-funder, AMC, is American-based and wants its viewers to feel at home. There’s a new writer, too, in Paul Webb, best known for scripting the Hollywood movie Selma, about Martin Luther King
