Played the alpha some months ago, hated it. Especially the enemy A.I. with their aimbot is ridiculous.
First time I had that Windows store and Xbox crap experienced... made it even worse. Seriously how the fuck did they manage to design a clusterfuck of a system like that is beyond me. Compared to it Origins and Uplay are just stellar.
Watched Twitch streams for a few hours while doing other stuff, and I'm not that hyped any more at all - I ain't gonna upgrade to Win10 for that either.
I really expected this to be a somewhat fully fleshed-out MMO experience with factions and alliances, larger ships/crews and interactive towns, but it doesn't seem like it'll be the case whatsoever. Anyone but the crew you're part of can be nothing but a potential enemy you can choose to ignore. As of now, it's just 4-man groups on identical boats hoarding chests that don't even give random/exciting loot - just currency you can use for.. cosmetics. The world feels quite empty at best, just static NPCs in the outposts, sharks in the sea.. I know there should be more wildlife later on, but that's not nearly enough to me.
The best part about this game seems to be the sailing and the PvP ( even though every encounter ends up being quite similar, just jump on the other ship, try shooting them, steal chests, rise water level ), but I doubt it'd be enough to keep me interested. I'm too disappointed with what the game is versus what it could have been - the proper multiplayer pirate game I wanted.
Sure, it looks fun for a few hours, but I'm not paying 60€ for that. It's pretty much Blackwake with fetch quests added on top of it. It's typically one of those games where you have to make it fun yourself. The video you linked almost feels like those scripted demos.
You could have fun with a stick for hours if you're creative enough, sure, but a 60€ stick doesn't appeal to me At 20€, I might have given this a thought. Who knows, maybe they'll add worthwhile content as time passes - but I have the feeling they made this as harmless as they did on purpose.
Ironically the game that comes closest to a Pirate game seems to be AC: Black Flag (which I really liked even though it was criticized for being more of a pirate game than a AC-game).
Given the game is Xbox PlayAnywhere title. Wonder if you could get Xbox Pass and play via that.
The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don’t always spoil the good things and make them unimportant.
When you praise in such manner a Microsoft game that sells for 60 and offers for 15... no further commentary is required.
I reckon I never was a fan of this flapjack or whatever he is called. And it's latest YT-bullshitery is not helping changing my mind either. Used to watch some BF-related videos for the sake of new info and CTE updates, but since EA unveiled it's patent for the magnificent strategy to fuck us all via it's brilliant 'Matchmaking Algorithm'... I don't care that much about BF anymore either.
There has been an update to the closed beta, so I rescanned the pak and compared it to the pak of the previous version (1.73.5774.2). My new findings can be found below.
All merchants now feature a talk animation
Lots of female-exclusive animations added
More animations for chicken, snake and pig (run forward scared, turn, startle, hunger)
Beards, belts, dresses, eyepatches, gloves, hooks, hair and boots in wardrobe and added to shops
New clothing styles: Kraken, Ferryman, Blackdog, Sovereign and Bilgerat (all include most of the above-mentioned new clothing items)
A separate weapon-shopkeeper
Admiral and Bilgerat-themed weapon skins for blunderbuss, cutlass and flintlock (available in the new weapon shop)
New kraken animations (IdleToDefeated, HoldingToDefeated etc.) and particles (roar mouth, underwater powerslam)

Lots of new npc_ghost_crew character variants
New variants of the shipwright added

You gotta do what few people are willing to do: open the Windows Store.
Inside it, download the Xbox Insider Hub app. Using it will let you test Microsoft stuff. It'll allow you to join the Scale Test tomorrow. After using the Insider Hub, you'll be able to download and launch Sea of Thieves, you'll get an error message (servers down) until the test launches.
I gave it a try on PC and it seems to be working for me. It told me I had access after using the Xbox Insider Hub and then opened the Store page to download the game (15gb).
The Xbox and Xbox Insider Hub app are two separate apps. (Xbox is default with W10, Xbox Insider Hub is found on the Store)

For people curious enough to try the game (it turned out to be more fun than anticipated), but not enough to pay full price, there are two good options:
1) There's a 14 days trial of the Xbox Game Pass on the Windows Store. It works on PC and will give you access to a very limited amount of games. One of them will be Sea of Thieves once it releases.
2) There are 1 month long trials of the Xbox Game Pass for sale at maybe 2.50$ on various key sites. Redeeming one of them on the WinStore gives you the option to get an extra month free if you enter your billing info and enables "auto-renew subscription". You can disable it after signing up. Note: Maybe this option is also available for the 14 days, but I haven't seen people talk about it.
This only works for anyone who HASN'T signed up for the Xbox Game Pass before (which I'd imagine is most of us).
Those two choices can probably also be used for future games (like State of Decay 2) as long the trials aren't removed. 2 months of game pass for 2.50$ aint bad.
Exposure to reviewers and streamers ("journalists" such as reviews and the like, of course there's probably some good ones still.) was cited as one of the most important concerns to developers after a query so having sites like IGN give the game a quote worthy score is a pretty big factor.
(From ResetEra and a topic about some zelda clone game.)
One of the fucked up reasons these amazing box art covers and what not get plastered by crappy review scores I suppose, I don't pay much heed to professional and user reviews myself and judge the game from my own experience and enjoyment of it but that's apparently in the minority.
Which I guess is obvious seeing the pull some reviews have when fucking Metascore reviews are used as guides and bonuses from reaching 80 to 90 % on that site and the weight the curator stuff on Steam has even if I'm personally not a huge fan of it.
EDIT: Granted that's for steam and probably more about indies but it's probably not too dissimilar for bigger studios. (See that box art getting plastered by review scores and crappy quotes.)
Hell this thing about Twitch streams and pre-release somewhat guided early preview videos and reviews exploded in the last few years and some of these people are now making a living acting out personas or doing fake reactions for donations heh.
(And again there's probably some that are genuinely good too.)
Is this strictly MP or is there SP stuff in this game too?
You can sail solo, but you can't choose to be alone in the sea. You can complete the missions on your own, but you might still encounter other players, and they can attack you/steal your shit.
It's definitely a possibility. PvP is enabled at all time and the developers don't want to change it, as they see it as part of the "pirate" experience.
Smaller ships can potentially have an easier time avoiding bigger ships, so that's the one advantage they have. It definitely won't make for a relaxing solo experience, but playing it safe could allow solo players to avoid most engagements. A lot of people wish they would simply add a PvE alternative, but so far that's not coming.
