Hmmm yeah I am in a bit of a pickle
So I have a student loan out, and I am taking perhaps a year off university or so, and my bank thinks that I have finished school and wants me to repay the loan. So I am just wondering if I give the bank like a timetable plus my student card, will that be enough information for them, and will they check this information personally? Or just believe me.

here in the UK you are REQUIRED to show the bank a letter confirming placement at university for that year.. so no.. a timetable and student card will not do in this instance, unless you get a very nice bank clerk Wink

More importantly, again in the UK, student loans are not handled by the "bank" they're handled by the student loans company, who can access your university records and check Razz

I owe almost $54K for 7 years (pretty much max gov loans for all years, 1.5x the money for a year of grad school). I'm paying for 95% of my school by myself.

My loans were interest free (OSAP) until I finished going to school full-time. They give you a break to start paying, but the interest starts right away when you're finished, unless you can get loan forgiveness for the interest (based on financial need). I have to start making payments really soon.

Fuck school is expensive. Should be cheaper, especially considering that I've started working in a public sector type job that is of benefit to them. They should think of it as job training.

Yeah. fucking. right.

Seriously, I wish... Universities are somewhat subsidized to keep tuition lower than say, the US, but not even close to free.

if you're in the UK, you dont have to pay back your student loan until you're earning over 15 grand. I'm on a years break from uni and I dont need to pay mine back.

oh and to whoever said it, student loans in the UK aren't interest free. Student overdrafts are though. And if you're in the UK also, HSBC have a gap year service. If it's an overdraft you're talking about though, all you'd need to do would be "pay it off" by changing to a current account instead of a student account for a year.

"Student loans are designed to be inflation-neutral and are cheaper than commercially available loans. The interest rate is based on the retail price index and fixed for the year. Loans issued this September will be fixed at 3.2% for the next 12 months. This can and will change with inflation and the new rate, based on the headline rate of inflation in March, will be announced each September. As soon as the loan is paid to a student interest starts to build up. It continues to accrue throughout the life of the loan, until it has been paid back in full."

Around the same here, but not everyone get, depends on how much your parents earn and stuff like that.
