Elite: Dangerous Horizons and Beyond content announcements:

* 2018's Series of updates will be called "Beyond", with the first release happening in Q1 2018 and will be FREE for Horizons owners
* Planetary Tech rework: new lighting system, material rendering pass, diversification of landscape, and more.
* Quality of Life improvements: Better Crime and Punishment (including better armed system authority), Better trading data for more informed decision making, Wing Missions, and Engineering to be reworked to guarantee improved equipment for players.
* Guardian Arc to be revisited: providing new content such as Guardian tech; notably new hardpoint equipment. These will need to be unlocked for players on an individual basis (through "personal narratives"), as opposed to how we are unlocking the current AX weapons through Community Goals.
* Galnet Audio: Galnet will be provided with a text-to-speech medium for its articles.
* A lot more ships to come": So far, Type-10, Krait and Chieftain ships have been confirmed. Latter two are Lakon projects in conjuction with the Alliance
* Squadrons: New platform for clan-like system offering enhanced communications for a range of players. Also offering the ability for Squadrons to purchase ship carriers, which allows players to rearm, repair, refuel and respawn.
* Mining to be revisited: Devs want to invoke a feeling of "Wild West Prospecting", giving players new tools to find and exploit ore reserves.
* Planetary Terrain Rework: Addition of Rock Scatter update for larger size and scale of terrain objects, along with localised fog effects too in order to make different planet types feel more distinct from one another.
* Exploration to be revisited: Will be updated to add a suite of new activities to find and engage with. In addition to Exploration missions and a Codex to log discoveries and act as a sort of encyclopedia for space anomalies. With the addition of new effects, phenomenae and anomalies to discover.
* Thargoid Arc extended: Story will naturally be progressed, with the introduction of a new ship or "clan" of Thargoids.

Very Happy

Yes, it''s especially impressive in VR I gotta say...burning wreckage everywhere...random explosions that rock your ship.. the sounds of panic from the tannoy..it's very good stuff.

I just hope it's going to lead to a little more action....

Well.. aside from the incredibly sloooow Thargoid story, this is very likely Frontier's make-or-break year. The doom of the game has been predicted for 3 years, but I think it really is becoming an issue right now, and these new series' of updates are going todecide this game's future.

I imagine we'll see the Crime & Punishment systems start to be tested, along with engineer changes. But there's a lot more that needs to be worked on,, and I'm just not convinced that Frontier can/want to do that.

Agree, this is the year.

If this year does not deliver then i assume many will move on.

With the game already released on all platforms i just wonder how much Frontier are willing to pump into new content. Financially it would not make much sense but in saying that i assume they do make a fair bit off cosmetics and more DLC is on the way so we will have to wait and see.

Aside from the series of beyond updates it will be interesting to see what the Paid Premium content for this year will be.

Well yes, the paid content is going to be the killer aspect of their profits. People WILL pay for good DLC, as long as it's as 'important' as Horizons... should have been...

Why won't someone make a properly EPIC space combat game - with proper HOTAS controls and GOOD physics... *sigh*

The make or break year is the year that another space game is released.

There are a lot in development including Star Citizen Laughing

The problem with Elite is that at least in my opinion most people know it has huge problems but play it because its the most complete and playable space mmo that exists.

The thing is, its so easily going to be outdone by any other space game that actually manages to finish (which is the problem)

Elite was doomed from the start. The flying and and combat feels amazing, everything is amateurish and would need so much reworking to allow the game to actually do something useful. The game was dead for me early on when I learnt it used p2p networking instead of servers.

Braben is too fixated in his ways, he had the chance of making something amazing but choose the lazy way of procedurally generated content and peer to peer connection. It's such a shame because the flight model is the best I've seen in a space sim and the audio design is orgasmic.

The audio in ED is easily up there as one of the very best, it's the little touches as well as the grand musical pieces - I still remember the video of how they create sounds... the detail was just exquisite.

As for the procedural systems.. I don't think that should have been a barrier to adding content. No need to add for every system. No, I still think the issue is the engine itself - I don't think the way the game is designed is capable of dynamic events. Sure, ships can jump in and out of instances, and when a capital ship does it, that can be pretty epic.

I would have loved to have something like say, these station attacks happening in real time - perhaps they put out a distress call and 10 mins later a Thargoid fleet would jump in and start attacking. Instead we see everything update on a Thursday after the PowerPlay tick... which is very lazy.

We know they CAN do scripted events... hyperdictions are proof of that.

You guys have never heard of moving on?

The coop and experience in general was really frustrating and even with this update might continue to be.

Most people I know have well and truly moved on from Elite Dangerous and won't come back without huge changes.

My point was that if they put things like coop missions and some of the other updates that in my view are essential to the game, at the start, people would still be playing.

When I first started playing there were players everywhere, people would interdict me and all sorts of things.

These days the player base is so small, most people just focus on grinding.

A lot of people play solo/private these days which I've always found it a stupid feature. You can get your Anaconda offline then come online and take players out. At least you used to when there were actually players to interdict.

Even if I visit the same places I used to, there are no players around. Maybe its because everyone is sitting on planets, who knows.

Where did you see him saying "noone" ? Or did he edit the comment? Because if not it's really poor way of "argument" when someone just twists someone else's words for his own agenda.

I personally don't play E: D but watch some random stream at times and I have never seen people play together in this game, which is what bart5986 is saying. Everyone seems to be only solo grinding. And if you check that steamchart's link a little more you will see the peak and average players are declining and only increase when there is a big update or a sale such as the Humble Bundle sale from few days ago.

Game is in a very bad shape, there is no denying that. After such a long time there is still no real content in the game and grinding for good stuff was never worse. For some fucked up reason they just don't want to make the grinding part easier. But on the other hand, if they make that faster i think that almost everyone will leave since behind that there is absolutely nothing to do.

And as it's been said, player numbers are low, very low. Game has peeks on updates, but then people realize that they didn't do shit and leave the game collecting the dust for another few months until the next update.

Nope I never edited my post, he probably just understands very little about the game.

I thought I would do some maths to give everyone a better idea. (I hope I've done it right anyway)

There are 18,373,934 discovered systems.

There are 4000 players in the game on average

Now correct me if I'm wrong, but this should mean that in the game, you could be up to 4593 jumps away from another player.

You could say maybe 2240 jumps away if you guess half of the systems have nothing worth going to.

And that number is probably better then that because of community missions that part of the player base take part in that keeps people in similar areas.

But then you also have people playing solo/private

You also have people landing on planets which means you can't encounter them in space. This probably reduces it a lot.

And, at least in my experience even when we had a community mission where you made 30 million in one go a long time ago, nobody would interact with each other, everyone just wanted to grind credits. We don't even get those community missions anymore, you get a lot less credits.

So in reality this is basically a single player game and before the latest patch you couldn't even play coop, but now maybe you can depending on the quality of these coop missions.

But I will point out, the game wasn't always like this. It used to be that when you played Elite Dangerous, it was actually dangerous to play because it had other players in the game who could attack you.

As for the rest... we'll have to see I suppose. I'm hoping the whole Thargoid vs Guardian story is going to actually kick off properly soon, otherwise I'll log in for a week and give up again.

So since the game is currently on steam sale for lousy 11€...is it still worth getting into it? Season pass any good? Don't care about the cash, but rather my time, since apparently most people are raging about it being grindy with nothing to do after getting the last ship.

I basically just need to scratch my space sim itch for a bit since there is pretty much no decent alternative. Pewpew stuff, explore and fuck around with people. Yay or nay?
