I have played around an hour. It looks simple but is pretty complex. It has XCOM (the new one) base management, research of new technologies, some simple diplomacy eg. factions that you can ally with or fight against, resource management, space and ground combat. Your crew, not officers can get special perks that gives bonuses to the ships.
Of course I've fucked up at the beginning with bad decisions and will have to restart but so far it was fun and I got the feeling of being space station commander with all the choices that you have to make.

It was a long time since I was so disappointed in a game. It just reeks of bad game design.
At first it looked like an XCOMish game set in space but everything I was hot for: base building, research etc. is very basic and flat.
But the worst part is the game design, most time you will spend in the game will be fighting boring, almost identical battles in space. Like 90% of the time. In the mean time you might automate resource harvesting or send some one to rebuild a colony but that's it. The research tree will be unlocked when you get to a certain quest so no advancing forward at your own pace.
But the biggest issue is how the acts of the game are constructed. When you unlock another act you feel like you are send to a different game, first act is almost only fighting with the cronenberg space mutants than suddenly you unlock act two and you have to deal with quests, other factions and a little more management. First it's a shock because it feels like quite a different game but it all becomes very mundane fast and you are back to the fucking battles. Also I don't know why you couldn't have this features in the first couple of hours of the game?! And suddenly you unlock third act and when you are not prepared and you probably won't be you are fucked. You are suddenly playing against the clock and due to some decisions and changes in recent patches you can be set in instafail scenario.
Really nice pixel art but fuck that game design. Skip it, maybe if it's for a buck in a bundle.

We'd like to announce our upcoming release of Halcyon 6: Lightspeed Edition! We started working on H6:LE after v1.3.1 was released. By the time it is released in August, that will be almost 6 months of full time development on this new edition!
