im looking after a pc with an i7 cpu running on windows 7.

microsoft... dear, sweet, benevolent microsoft - in their consumer-friendly desire to push windows 10, have blocked security updates on windows 7 for newer cpus. will that pc be fucked?

https://security.googleblog.com/2018/01/todays-cpu-vulnerability-what-you-need.html?m=1

Quote:
The Project Zero researcher, Jann Horn, demonstrated that malicious actors could take advantage of speculative execution to read system memory that should have been inaccessible. For example, an unauthorized party may read sensitive information in the system’s memory such as passwords, encryption keys, or sensitive information open in applications. Testing also showed that an attack running on one virtual machine was able to access the physical memory of the host machine, and through that, gain read-access to the memory of a different virtual machine on the same host.

These vulnerabilities affect many CPUs, including those from AMD, ARM, and Intel, as well as the devices and operating systems running them.

Quote:
A warning regarding explanations about processor internals in this blogpost: This blogpost contains a lot of speculation about hardware internals based on observed behavior, which might not necessarily correspond to what processors are actually doing.

We have some ideas on possible mitigations and provided some of those ideas to the processor vendors; however, we believe that the processor vendors are in a much better position than we are to design and evaluate mitigations, and we expect them to be the source of authoritative guidance.

Yeah, the manufacturers are going to be totally honest with us Sad

yes.. thats great for MY pc, running windows 7 with an older cpu

but as i said, microsoft blocked NEW cpus (including that i7) from receiving security updates on windows 7 in an effort to push people to installing windows 10, so not entirely sure how ill be able to patch that pc.

@chiv
Your PC will get fucked up if you happen to get one of those exploits on that machine.
Then it will rape your machine till nothing is left anymore.

Chiv, look at wufuc for all your new CPU troubles.
Used it on a few machines so far. No issues.

I'll wait for proper benchmarks, gaming benchmarks at that.
Anything else with lower performance I couldn't give fuck one about...

TL;DW
Gaming doesn't seem to affected.
Some games even have 1-2 more fps after the update. grinhurt

It's a completely different story with applications outside of gaming.

What's the reasoning behind not updating yet? (serious question Razz )

I imagine the delta for older CPUs will be a bit more noticeable, though the effect in games not being as impactful as originally feared is s something reassuring. Still, this entire ordeal sucks sockets' butts :')

Epic shows performance impact on gaming servers
Quote:
We wanted to provide a bit more context for the most recent login issues and service instability. All of our cloud services are affected by updates required to mitigate the Meltdown vulnerability. We heavily rely on cloud services to run our back-end and we may experience further service issues due to ongoing updates.

Here is a link to an article which describes the issue in depth.

The following chart shows the significant impact on CPU usage of one of our back-end services after a host was patched to address the Meltdown vulnerability.

Damn. Shocked
This might explain why since a few days i get so many lags in Battlefront 2. EA probably running potato servers too that reached their limit. Laughing

I'm a little confused (granted, it doesn't take much these days). Intel have released a list of CPU's that are affected by these vulnerabilities:

Intel® Core™ i3 processor (45nm and 32nm)
Intel® Core™ i5 processor (45nm and 32nm)
Intel® Core™ i7 processor (45nm and 32nm)
Intel® Core™ M processor family (45nm and 32nm)
2nd generation Intel® Core™ processors
3rd generation Intel® Core™ processors
4th generation Intel® Core™ processors
5th generation Intel® Core™ processors
6th generation Intel® Core™ processors
7th generation Intel® Core™ processors
8th generation Intel® Core™ processors
Intel® Core™ X-series Processor Family for Intel® X99 platforms
Intel® Core™ X-series Processor Family for Intel® X299 platforms
Intel® Xeon® processor 3400 series
Intel® Xeon® processor 3600 series
Intel® Xeon® processor 5500 series
Intel® Xeon® processor 5600 series
Intel® Xeon® processor 6500 series
Intel® Xeon® processor 7500 series
Intel® Xeon® Processor E3 Family
Intel® Xeon® Processor E3 v2 Family
Intel® Xeon® Processor E3 v3 Family
Intel® Xeon® Processor E3 v4 Family
Intel® Xeon® Processor E3 v5 Family
Intel® Xeon® Processor E3 v6 Family
Intel® Xeon® Processor E5 Family
Intel® Xeon® Processor E5 v2 Family
Intel® Xeon® Processor E5 v3 Family
Intel® Xeon® Processor E5 v4 Family
Intel® Xeon® Processor E7 Family
Intel® Xeon® Processor E7 v2 Family
Intel® Xeon® Processor E7 v3 Family
Intel® Xeon® Processor E7 v4 Family
Intel® Xeon® Processor Scalable Family
Intel® Xeon Phi™ Processor 3200, 5200, 7200 Series
Intel® Atom™ Processor C Series
Intel® Atom™ Processor E Series
Intel® Atom™ Processor A Series
Intel® Atom™ Processor x3 Series
Intel® Atom™ Processor Z Series
Intel® Celeron® Processor J Series
Intel® Celeron® Processor N Series
Intel® Pentium® Processor J Series
Intel® Pentium® Processor N Series

Now I have an Intel i7 6700 on a 14nm process. Going by the above list, I assume I'm not affected by either security vulnerabilities or have I got it totally wrong Confused
