Same here, I was having a blast but eventually decided to put the game on hold for a while (waiting for the inevitable heavy fixing). Seems like it was a good decision
For the fellow yarring men: ELEX Update v1.0.2946.0-BAT (requires ELEX-RELOADED and the previous ELEX Update v1.0.2846.0-BAT)

This is good news.
I had to stop playing the game due to my brain being mesmerised, and my eyes moving of their own volition in tune with the Dance of the Boobies.

Most people played through the game at release and didn't encounter that many bugs.
The complaints people had won't get fixed (story, dialogues, clunky combat, copy-paste char models).
You should be able to decide for yourself, what you want to do.

I was hesitant at first also, but I just started playing and it's a nice game. An unpolished gem.

I started playing 2 days ago, and after a bit of a rough start it had me hooked after ~5 hours.
25 hours played and only just now joined a faction. Did lots of quests for each faction though to get a feel for them.
Also I might have gimped myself a bit by going for a caster build and basically had to avoid most enemies up until now. I hope it will pay out later.
Game runs pretty great though, no crashes or anything, also haven't encountered any quest bugs yet. Combat feels awful though, but that was to be expected from Piranha Bytes.

I played this game for a little fucking while and it was pretty, well how do I put it.....shit. Felt worse than Risen but fuck it I played a little bit then I fucking put it aside for a few weeks and recently thought to my fuckingself: why is there still HDD space fucked by Elex? Immediately shot it in the fucking bin and its gone now. I am better off without it. Technically it was a fucking disaster and the extremely slow bullshit dialogues.....cant take that shit anymore. Its for hardcore rpg nutsacks

Great...
Game throws an exception stating that aplication terminated abnormally (but the .exe keeps running) after the thq nordic logo, gets stuck on the loading screen right after that. Creates a dump file but not a log file as the exception error states.
Installed all the redists in the folder, did a driver update to latest nderpia drivers, rtss and afterburner are turned off, even disabled av protection but it's a no go.
Any suggestions before I hit the refund "button"?

Renaming them to what?
I'm rolling back driver after driver, 382.33 actually got past from the crash... to a black screen with some nice music playing along
I'll keep rolling back and trying, then do a clean reinstall of the latest nderpia drivers since according to the devs this is a driver issue...

@tonizito
Do yo have crapforce experience installed? Disable completely its overlay or even better yet delete this pos.
PS afaik u can use afterburner with elex if u enable custom direct3d.
@tonizito Quote: | Renaming them to what? |
I suppose to anything u want.. add "_" in the end or something. This way the game will be forced to create default config files.

Only the regular display driver is installed.
Renaming/deleting those 2 .xam files doesn't do anything.
And the game doesn't even create a ConfigDefaultNew.xml for me in steamapps\common\ELEX\data\ini for me to rename/delete.
2nd game in a row from PB that I have problems with, the latest edition of Risen 3 also required some mumbo-jumbo to get it running.

In Elex, they went for a more realistic approach where hard and easy enemies are wildly mixed together but this means you die a LOT and it's not always obvious whether an enemy is supposed to kick your ass or whether you're missing something. For example, when I moved from melee to ranged, I discovered that many enemies became piss easy. This makes the game feel a little too chaotic. It would have been better if they had scripted fixed enemies in fixed zones with random enemies spawning according to your level. |
This is the main problem for me too. I would wander into an area, half-explore it until I got my ass kicked, rinse and repeat. I went through like half the map without fully exploring anything really, just trying to get enough XP so I can level up. Now that I'm finally strong I'm supposed to just re-visit everything if I want to fully explore it. Really bad design here.
I guess for me it was even worse than average because I wanted to join the Clerics, and Ignadon is even harder (on average) than the rest of the faction areas. I couldn't finish the Hort entry quest (the trader one, with 4-5 Rippers) until I was like 40 hours into the game and got good PSI powers (for which I needed to join the Clerics). Luckily there are other ways to enter, but in what mind do have to be to put that quest there? Did they just hit "Randomize" on all quest and monster difficulties before releasing the game?
There are other issues compared to Gothic/Risen, like areas not having rewarding loot (despite having difficult guardians), armor not being very effective, even the best one, money not having much value, skill usefulness varying wildly, stunlocking enemies with heavy weapons, and more.
After ~45h in game I'm only now feeling I'm capable enough to defeat everything using melee, without relying on extremely cheap PSI powers (which massacre everything), except maybe larger groups of enemies, which seem impossible to handle without ranged or significant amount of kiting.
Still enjoying the game, despite of everything, but hell there are some seriously bad design choices here.

Windows 7, I missed that initially, so if that's the case is this installed?
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/jj863687%28v=vs.85%29.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396
That's mandatory for DirectX 11.1 functionality which some games require.
Download:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=36805
(And some more documentation on it: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2670838/platform-update-for-windows-7-sp1-and-windows-server-2008-r2-sp1 )
There's another security update too that some software will prefer if it's installed because it adds another feature that comes as a standard in Windows 8 and newer but is lacking from Windows 7, forgot what it was called though but something with folder links or some such.
EDIT: As noted in the first link it's partial DXGI 1.2 and D3D11.1 support also but it should at least allow for games to start up even if it doesn't provide quite the full functionality.
(Which is what we're after, for now this should solve most issues with games requiring DX11.1 on Windows 7)

Yeah it's already installed, this is the only game to date with which I'm having this weird problem. I'll give the cracled GoG version a shot, and will probably get my refund from steam later today.
Already looked in PB's forums but there are no answers there so far.

Tried with the Steam overlay off? That's about the only remaining suggestion but yeah if it's within the refund period then that and grabbing the latest version of the GOG version works too, troubleshooting mostly comes down to suggestions so there's not much else I can suggest.
Overlays disabled, that OS update already installed, blank config file so it's not something like the game trying to run at a certain resolution or such and even the AV software was disabled but that didn't help either.
EDIT: Well there's windowed or borderless mode I suppose and seeing if that allows for the game to start up but it shouldn't make a difference.
That's Application.xml and then having WindowMode="1" set.
(I think 0 is fullscreen and 2 is borderless.)

And the problem is, there's not even an Application.xml under appdata/local/elex/config to change stuff in.
The thing is, sometimes after deleting configdefault.xml from the steamfolder, redownloading it, restarting steam and nuking the appdata elex folder the game wouldn't throw the exception at the thq logo but after that all I'd get was a black screen with some music playing. Waited a bit with that on to see if the main menu popped up but nothing.
Had to alt+f4 to exit the game and then it would throw the exception and start with the exception bullshit at the logo's all over again.
Doubt it will be different with the gog version but I'll try.
Also, for the first time in years, I'll try close every other background program and run it then but this is simply ridiculous
