Watched It as well, out of all the possible scenarios involving woeful modernized 'next gen' reboomaking tricks, this was one of the most positive ones. Which doesn't say much really (the bar is set as low as the Limbo world record), but I found the direction competent, the kids always manage to follow the flow without being annoying, there's involving music and a distinct style, technically speaking it is a well-made attempt, although Pennywise has traded his old charisma for a set of trypophobic teeth.

The problem for me arrives with the concept itself like Saner said, no matter how you try to make it look terrifying, I will always find the idea of a clown desperately chasing kids more awkwardly amusing than scary, there will never be tension involved which kinda nullifies the whole effort. Still, a 6,5/10 for having given birth to something that isn't insulting *it's something*.
The original TV movie terrified me in 1990, but that was the perspective of a five year old, even the sight of creepy Curry was enough to scare me for weeks. I did the mistake of rewatching that just a few days ago and it's magically turned into a comedy Very Happy Laughingkiss me fat boy!

Amélie (original title: Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain) (2001) - 8.5/10

This one's all thanks to Ixi - he posted a .gif in the Useless Void "Best GIF Ever" thread a few days back. The visual style looked really quirky/cool (although it WAS edited a bit from the original scene Very Happy ) , so I threw it into the magical Google Image Search and found the film.

I fucking loved it. The cinematography was beautiful. I don't often watch foreign flicks, but I think I understand now why everyone raves about French movies. It had that same "timeless" yet "warm" feel as Pushing Daisies. The characters and story were interesting and filled with quirks. You never quite knew what to expect.

And yes, it could be considered a romance comedy, but I make no apologies, I loved it! Laughing

I've seen it (before I saw this one). I had no idea it was from the same director until you mentioned it, but the similarities are definitely there. But man, that movie was fucking DARK in comparison (both literally and figuratively). I like Amélie more.

just started bright.. jesus christ i wonder if i can make it through. if you were hoping for a wacky weird fantasy mashup buddy cop.. oh boy.. this is through and through hardcore 'lets use surrogates to talk about race inequality' bullshit. its so painfully hamfisted... jesus christ.

also im feeling kinda triggered because im hardcore racist against elves.

The dialog is so awkward and forced, and Jesus Christ it's just nonstop rap music. I guess this was part of will smiths contract or some shit.

Ok brights actually picking up a bit. It's still full of awkwardly written dialog and its still painfully ott in regards to "racial issues", but I'm more optimistic than I was 20 minutes ago.

Ok finished bright. It's a symmetrical film. The first 30 is terrible, you'll want to stop... And the last chunk of the film is cringeworthy... It's so cliche, so poorly written, badly acted and cheesy as hell.

The film is essentially a chase movie, so in that regard it's tolerable. Once you get past the beginning, it's literally just black cop + "black cop" getting chased by one group or the other. The action is acceptable, nothing that'll make your jaw drop or get really excited about, but it's not bad, and finally the plot... and this is just shy of 2 hours long.. is nonexistent. I'm not joking, you keep waiting for some kind of story to kick in, but it never happens. It's just vague references sustaining one characters motivations or getting us from one action sequence to the next. And it's a real pity because conceptually this could be something cool. It's an interesting world they built, I just feel like the film were watchin is either too late or too early in this worlds history to show the cool shit. Possibly it's intended to be the logical two thousand year sequel to any generic fantasy film (like lord of the rings) which would be cool, but they don't handle it in a really interesting way, and they DON'T have any interest in letting the story shine on its own merits, the filmmakers are too interested in wasting the films premise on social commentary bullshit... and not even doing a good job of it, it's all so poorly done and hamfisted.

On the positives, it's shot pretty well... It didn't look cheap... and the Orc makeup was really quite good.

So yeah, not great.. Massive missed opportunity, because this was never a shit project from the start.. it could so easily have been an interesting, well made film and my disappointment in its wasted potential is why I've typed so much shit about it. Grit your teeth and plot through the painful awkward first 30 and you'll find a passable chase film with no plot, no real thought, and a terrible Hollywood low effort ending.

Bonus point awarded for having an Orc named "mikey" though Very Happy

The thing, 2011 version

Ok, that indeed was pretty good. The paranoia IMO was handled better here than in the '82 one, even though it was done with pretty quickly as people started to die off in quick succession. Not that the Americans' paranoia was handled badly, just that it felt better done here. Maybe because they figured things out quicker and had a bit more time to be jumpy. Was very happy to see little details explained about the base and how and why it was as it was. None of it felt forced, just so they can get things into place. Tho it wasn't perfect. In the original the staircase wall was clearly broken near the axe-door, but in the prequel it was burned. And the Lab was supposed to be burned, yet they find perfectly fine papers on the floor and watchable video cassettes on the table in the original. Little things, that I can easily forgive. Otherwise, top notch. Also Mary, she was pretty in Scott pilgrim, drop dead gorgeous with natural hair. Me Gusta

Surprisingly, didn't mind the CGI. It was done relatively well, and never really pulled me out of the experience by being overtly artificial.

EDIT: looking at a YT video about the original practical Thing puppets, damn, they looked so much better... Sad

Bright - ~5/10

A wasted potential. Very comic booky, too be honest I would have been more forgiving if this was a comic book. Crappy dialogue, chemistry between characters and the last act dragging the whole movie down.

i actually LIKE the core concept... a sort of 'what if' scenario of how the world would look with all the fantasy races a thousand years after something like lord of the rings.

a talented writer taking something like this on, would have made for quite an interesting film (as long as you could get past the image of an orc wearing a cop uniform, i guess Very Happy)

All in all it was better than expected, certainly better than the confused BvS crap. And IMO it certainly didn't deserve to be savaged by the critics like it was, especially now after seeing them suck so much star wars dick
Hope they can bounce back with another one of these.
