I gave it a go and it's quite fun but it's often really a game of rock paper scissors - some starter decks are extremely powerful against other starter decks which can be annoying when you're at the losing end of one.
Also, to get really started, you either have to pump in money to build better decks (there's loads of decks to be found online) or you have to play lots of games until you get the cards you need. Neither is ideal because, unlike MTG where card collecting has a value on its own (resale value), I'm always a bit iffy about spending money on virtual stuff you can't even trade with other players to get some money back if you end up quitting.

It's good. Gwent is generous for f2p players. But you still need to build a card collection of course. I've you spend 1-2 hours a day you'll have a competetive deck in 2 weeks. You're not gonna learn the game any faster so there is no reason to spend any money. Only downside is that you can't experiment with a small cardset. Matchmaking for new players still is a bit harsh and playing starter decks will be frustrating
Swim post budget versions of his decks, like this one. Perhaps that will help you.

Only reason not to play is when you're not into card games.

I'm into card games but when it comes to spending money, I'm not as keen for virtual stuff . Yesterday I had 4 kegs saved up and the result was a bunch of shitty cards I wasn't interested in - imagine paying $8 for that ... .

Buying kegs in Gwent is poor value indeed.
But as said, going f2p is totaly fine, you're good in 2-3 weeks when playing regulary.
"Gwent: Thronebreaker is a new single player game, based on the Gwent card-game, taking place in the Witcher universe during the second Nilfgaardian invasion in 1267. "
"Gwent: Thronemaker certainly doesn't look to be a complicated game, but it is an opportunity for CD Project Red to tell more stories taking place in The Witcher universe."
I'm trying to understand why the author is making this sound like it's a separate game from Gwent.
This is just a single-player mode. Anyway looking forward to it, since I've played Gwent quite a bit.
Thronebreaker, GWENT’s story-driven single player campaign, is moving to 2018. We decided to increase the campaign’s scope and need more time to work on it. Shifting release windows is always something we approach seriously, however, we’ll never hesitate to do it if we feel you’ll get a better game as a result. I would like to apologize everyone who planned to play Thronebreaker over the Holidays — I assure you that we will do our best to make the final game worth the additional wait.
It's just so hard to move from HS to any CCG game out there, even though they are good.
The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don’t always spoil the good things and make them unimportant.
I love this game, I have nearly 500 hours in the GoG client played.
A bit skeptical about such a massive re-work of the game coinciding also with the game going out of beta, I think they should've updated and maybe left 2-3 months for iteration and fixes.
Thronebreaker though has been delayed since last year so that should be solid.
