Since my Windows 10 have issues with displaying HDR properly, I either use DLNA to my smarttv, or Plex + Chromecast Ultra.
I don't have an atmos receiver, but if you need atmos, those options might not work.

What are these "reasonable specs"? It actually requires quiite a lot unless you have a S905X box or something there that can hardware decode everything.
Also yes, you can play HEVC over DLNA, that is what I do aswell with Universal Media Server, can play HDR movies just fine over it on my TV and the TV itself handles all the decoding etc, PC only transfers the file to the TV so no juice required on it.

LG added HEVC support in 2015 and all there webos tv supports it also Samsung can't comment on Sony

Yes, audio goes to pre amp via optical from TV and from pre amp to power amp to speakers.

I don't think they're selling 4k web-dls yet.
They want to keep it below 5 gigs.
And not every consumer who buys movies from play store/iTunes can handle hevc.

That man of steel one is kinda grainy in some scenes. Not sure if rls issue of just the movie and film grain filterz.
