Well that was pretty good! It had a solid mix of jump scares and tension building with some decent misdirection (setting you up to expect jump scares that don't happen) and even a few moments of genuine shivering tension.

A very solid horror film.

Only complaint was the tacked on unnecessary ending which was more corny than scary.

Brawl in cell block 99 7,5/10

It was a good slow paced movie with action springled on it. Although can't help but just laugh at some of the bad effects it had. Laughing

Transformers: The last knight 6/10

Dumb silly action, but in some regard actually better than the first 3 with Shia Ladouche w/e. Very Happy

How about letting this "franchise" just stay dead and I mean the real kind of dead.

not bad. i think the writing was a bit rubbish with things being brought up and then swiftly forgotten, plus things not explained very well, but it had some great action sequences.. especially some of the duels.

Silence (2016)

7-/10

Well..it was a kinda boring story about misadventures of "cretins" in Japan. Laughing And too long for what it had to offer.....The last part of the film was pretty good though..

Shogun and The Last Samurai were considerably more enjoyable.

PS It should have been about Ferreira...I think it would be more interesting..

The aspect that I liked the most about Silence was that it doesn't force any view point down the viewer's throat, it just describes both the conflicting positions and their many clashes/incompatibilities. It does that very slowly indeed though, a snail-paced pseudo-spiritual experience, it's like the movie wants to simulate the journey of the protagonists with all their struggles, it's almost masochistic Razz

Valerian 3D 7.5/10

Not bad by any means! A refreshing take on space operas, worse than Fifth Element but way better than dozens of genre films from the last 25 years for sure. Script had some dumb moments but wasn't horrible, plot is generic but well executed and set pieces were marvellously achieved. 3D was well done, not much pop outs but space scenes were a sight to behold. I've enjoyed it, but I can undesrtand some of the criticism (albeit not the overall bad reviews and the "gee, left out the cinema after 20 minutes" sentiment... like, WTF? It's way better than Wonder Woman or GotG2)

The Outlaws
7/10, standard korean gangster action. A bit heavy on the chinese resentment though.

Blade of the Immortal
8/10, enjoyable flick by Takeshi Miike. Many of the fantastical manga elements were fun as well, the characters were wacky. A bit hard to take Takuya Kimura seriously as a samurai, he still tries to pull off a lot of his patented facial expressions, kinda of takes away from the character.

brawl on cellblock 99 or whatever it was called

ehh.. it was ok.

the effects were fucking rubbish, i havent seen such bad practical gore effects since alien condiment. I read somewhere they were deliberately trying to make them very low-quality grindhouse style.. but why? why deliberately ignore all our wonderful modern technology, knowledge and processes, and make something that looks like someone bought a $5 halloween prop and then smashed it. Grindhouse films looked like that because they were made on stupid-low budgets with inferior (comparably) skills and technology, not because they WANTED the films to look shit. Makes no sense, and adds NOTHING to the film... this clearly wasnt a zero-budget film.

the plot was also fuckballs retarded.. it makes no sense once you get to the end, which makes the 2 or whatever hours a massive waste of time. its basically a movie with nothing but red herrings and plot devices. no meat, no development, nothing clever or interesting, just 2 hours of nonsense to move the character from scene to scene. If youre someone who hates plot and thinks its not a necessary part of a film in order to enjoy it, then it wont bother you.. but i do prefer my films to actually have a story worth telling with bonus points of coherancy... unless theyre scifi and loaded with cgi i guess Very Happy

that said, the film was.. pretty watchable. it didnt wallow in any of that reflective, slow paced philosophical, characters-staring-off-into-the-middle-distance as if its so profound arty farty bullshit that some of these films tend to have. it was pretty well paced. acting wasnt bad. didnt hate it, just a letdown. bone tomahawk was much much better, and even had a coherent story to go along with it.

edit: OH.. wanted to say.. the one thing this film really nails and does wonderfully, is that sense of.. i dunno.. hopelessness. it was a bleak as hell film, and that can be hard to pull off well.

Just watched it and yeah, it's a bit of a wash between duels being done masterfully, but the "big" battles seemed a bit too small in focus as to really show what's happening.

Especially when they beat the pirates in the city (with the Japanese commander), it really didn't feel like the Ming would have won lol.

And yeah, cheesy writing, but I like my Japanese/Chinese movies to be at least a bit cheesy (when it comes to pre-modern times anyway).

But all in all a nice flic. Kind of surprised me at the end, that everything in was fictional? I really thought it was at least based on true events or something lol.

But all in all, a lot of nice action and a fun watch for sure.

Justice League - 2/10

wow....

The Last superhero shitfilm I saw was Batman bin Suparman and that's when I went NOPE, never again, I refuse to ever watch any superhero shite again!
For some reason yesterday under the influence of alcohol and weed I thought, fuck it, and watched it with a friend.
What a bad fucking decision, this "movie" is every bit as bad as the last one I saw, there is no fucking structure, its a mess of random scenes glued together without any cohesion.
The single fun scene in the whole movie was a good concept that they could've elaborated on, but nope, they were done with it in 3 minutes and went back to the shitty, most generic of all time, wannabe villain who I never even heard about.
Fuck this movie, just fuck it.

Blade of the immortal, a.k.a plot device: the movie

Let me start by saying, no matter what's wrong with the fundamental progression and structure, it was impossible for me to hate this movie. The main guy and the little girl worked so well together, and the touches of humor here and there along with the overall style made this a blast to watch... it was such a likeable movie.

The film starts off so amazingly well, and even the transition from black and white to colour was handled visually and thematically so fantastically well. Sadly it's not long until it becomes apparent that shit is happening in this film "just 'cause"... nothing is really coherent or logical in its structure, it genuinely feels like the fights we all filmed, and then lines and scenes haphazardly slapped into the film to link one to the other... In some cases random fights even happen PURELY as plot devices to link two other action sequences together to move the story forward! It's a pity, because the production values were great.. A little effort in the storytelling department would have elevated the film to a really high level.

Now let's end this on a high by saying the fights were really good. Not artistic like you've seen in other martial arts films, full of immaculate blocks, dodges and strikes, but none the less thrilling to watch, especially the grand scale ones. Visceral is the word I'd use. Not beautiful and balletic like some films; just brutal, well crafted, satisfying bloody fun. If you like period films with action and minimal plot getting in the way, this film is worth your time.

All in all, an ultimately narratively disappointing but thrilling visual spectacle of a ride.

Logan Lucky 6.5/10

Too many conveniences and deus ex machina's that are made out to be 'planned in advance' (even though you never see them planning for it). The audience must assume too much and is left too much in the dark. The 'twist' near the end doesn't come across as believable because of this.

Bad writing, not a very good heist or even scam/hustler movie.

holy shit it's soooo gooood! still an unmatched masterpiece 15 years later.

Highly recommend a rewatch to interested parties. It's been like 8 years since I've seen it and it seems I had forgotten how good it is.

logan lucky

holy shit... holy.. shit.

i am VERY forgiving when it comes to movies i watch, but that could just have been the worst film ive seen all year. So much redundant, uninteresting, unexciting, poorly paced nonsense in it. At one point we had to sit through a whole sequence with some presenters talking bs about racing... i mean, as flavour dialog, sure.. a couple of seconds to convey that its a big event race, then move on - but we had to watch the ENTIRE thing for some reason... and then listen to some lady who cant sing, rattle out some horrible screechy, wailing song... so many sequences that could have been 5-10 seconds long to convey something, we had to sit through the whole unbearable thing. Was the editor drunk or something?

not exciting, not well acted, not well written, poorly edited, badly directed

the only positive thing i can say about this fucking turd, is that the little girl is my fucking hero for choosing at the last second not to sing some rihanna piece of shit.

also, apparently this was directed by some dude who used to be a talent and has some degree of acclaim? yet they made a terrible film that completely missed the mark, even though theyve made a similar film in the past that was quite good...

and this film had this lady in it:
 Spoiler:

can you think of any other films recently by once-good directors that used to know what theyre doing until they made a terrible film with this woman in it... coincidence....? not likely... Shifty Fellar

i didnt really get it, honestly he looked white to me

the movie wasnt bad. it was well constructed and had some solid fight/action sequences. it heavily suffered from trying.. as always.. to have a half-assed romance subplot so that chick realllly ground the film to a halt. if she hadnt been in it, the film would have been a LOT slicker and flowed a whole lot better.

also...

so yeah, not a bad film that has the added bonus of having been watched AFTER that shitfest lucky logan, making this film downright pleasant to watch in comparison.

Kingsman 2: Golden Circle: 10/10

Already loved the first one, loved the second one as well. Sure 10/10 are supposed to be real masterpieces, but seriously... in what it tries to do it excels.

Beautiful long over the top action scenes, masterfully woven together by computer animation. Doesn't take itself too seriously without being cheesy, knowingly winks at all the Spy-Action-Movie cliches without being goofy (as Austin Powers was for instance).

Great cast, another awesome henchman, a crazy villain with a funky cliche jungle-ruins base with the twist of having a 60s american town in there. And robots. And an almost cartoonishly evil plot but which still ties into the current societal changes of slow legalization and acceptance of drug usage.

Goddamn I just like action comedies and spy flicks like the old james bonds, and Kingsman 1&2 is just so exactly that if they were made with todays movie tech. Old James Bonds weren't as fucking serious dark and gritty like current ones either, and there is definitely a void there that Kingsman fills for me.

I want more Kingsman movies. More!

One of the best action movies *ever*, and oh boy if it doesn't show with this new presentation... amazing stuff! Perfect definition, extra details to catch, great color grading, awesome use of 3D depth. It's like a brand new movie - but it isn't, which makes it even better.
