Warner Bros. Television and the estate of J.R.R. Tolkien are in talks with Amazon Studios to develop a series based on the late author’s “The Lord of the Rings” novels. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is said by sources with knowledge of the situation to be personally involved in the negotiations, which are still in very early stages. No deal has been set.

they want some o dat game of thrones level money by trying to make another grand fantasy epic

i bet what we'll end up with is shannara level quality though. pushing out a franchise just to cash in on anothers success is always going to have a lesser impact because youre not doing it for the passion or because you have a great idea, but rather because you think it'll be easy money.

Christ, the movies and the books were already unbearably boring, can't even imagine a TV series.

Jacksons trilogy isn't perfect either, part 2 is a real slog to get through > so many and boring battle speeches, don't get why American's love that stuff so much.

well they do say stories BASED on lord of the rings, which means they'll probably do their own story with their own characters like what shadow of mordor did.

I think it's too soon. But they all want their fantasy franchise I guess... While the movies were nice, they're already starting to get dated, especially parts 2 and 3. Only the first movie was truly great, the others were indeed a lot more boring.

And it's been confirmed now:

Quote:
In its quest to launch a hit fantasy series of the caliber of Game of Thrones, Amazon has closed a massive deal, said to be close to $250 million, to acquire the global TV rights to The Lord of the Rings, based on the fantasy novels by J.R.R. Tolkien. The streaming service has given a multi-season commitment to a LOTR series in the pact, which also includes a potential spin-off series.

The budget for a fantasy series of that magnitude is likely to be $100-$150 million a season.

Call me interested.
Hopefully it will be a storyline with different characters though. I don't think i would want to watch a show with like Frodo and Gandalf with different actors.

The LOTR movies are old though. There's a whole new generation to cash in on that didn't experience them at the time of their release.

Sigh, there's other fantasy novels they could adapt. I guess the easy cash cow is too enticing for them.

I guess we will see LOTR the VR version in another 15 years or so when there's a new generation and media type to exploit.

Then i'm sure there are better series to choose from, other than one we've already seen before.

Not many knew about game of thrones, but the solid story hooked so many. I think it's just about selecting the right story. But if it's just easy money as you say, then i'm not confident they'll even try to make a good show of it.

I don't know where Amazon could go in terms of perspective (I enjoyed the trilogy very much, but that's where my knowledge ends), I just hope it's something made for adults with violence, elf titties, jingling ork willies and all the good stuff.

A budget of $100/150 million per season in theory is a more than sufficient one to produce something that doesn't look like a fantasy schoolplay, but.. let's wait at least for the names involved Very Happy

Amazon bought the LOTR rights for 250 mio, i guess there's gonna be atleast 2 seasons with atleast the same budget for the series or else it wouldn't make any sense.

I'd like to see the story about Melkor/Morgoth, Shelob (who turns against Morgoth to own the three Silmaril stones and almost beats him when his army of Balrogs comes to the rescue) and how Sauron turned bad (guess where George Lucas got his idea from? Wink ).

I'm done with Hobbit and LotR. There's so much more in that universe in different ages that could become great stories. Why not create something based on the little that is known about the two blue wizards that went to the east long before Gandalf and the other four wizards were sent down to middle earth, who supposedly introduced magic in various forms to the people and creatures of the eastern continent that is far removed from middle earth?

After battling Netflix for rights to bring the popular series to the small screen, the network's groundbreaking negotiation guaranteed a five-season commitment of J.R.R. Tolkien's adaptation, making it the "most expensive TV series ever."

On Nov. 13, Amazon Studios beat out Netflix for a $250 million rights deal with the Tolkien estate, publisher HarperCollins and New Line Cinema that includes a five-season commitment to bring The Lord of the Rings to the small screen. With the clock ticking, Amazon must be in production within two years, according to the terms of the pact. When production expenses like casting, producers and visual effects are factored in, the series is expected to cost north of $1 billion.

Insane budget, considering the 3 LOTR films combined cost less than $300 mil.

Yeah, it's really big, but $250M is just the rights. So it's something like $750M for 5 seasons. Some of it might be for marketing and such stuff.

In the end, I'm sure it's going to be something like $100-200M stretched over every 10h(?) season. Mighty expensive, but per minute quite a bit cheaper than the films.
