It's not any more humor than your average star trek movie really, its ever so slightly more silly, but not much. It's like they couldnt decide to go for a comedy sci-fi show or just doing a normal sci-fi show, so its gets half-way to both, which makes it kind of suck since you're not getting a great experience of either of the two.

The comedy is fine for me - I'd rather have Orville than the ridiculous thing called Discovery.

It seems as if they're tweaking the formula. The first episode had some really silly (and not funny) "jokes" that felt "off". The latter episodes have less of that (thankfully) and the show have quickly become more serious (although it's still a lighthearted sci-fi romp with some jokes spread out here and there).
I like The Orville (7.5/10 not including the first episode which I was quite hesitant about right after watching it). I hope they keep developing the show in the direction they're going now, leaving the penis jokes behind.

I've noticed it too, there's been progressively more balance between jokes and 'seriousness' (toning down the off-putting toilet humour) which is good indeed. The characters are starting to grow on me with their genuine banter (what Andromeda tried to do but failed miserably), as long as the various weekly mini-stories keep being so varied I can see myself closely following this show in the future.
Mind you, this is from someone who isn't too familiar with Star Trek (I know the gist of it of course, and I've seen some episodes here and there, though nothing more than that - my favourite channels when I was a kid wouldn't air it and I never caught up  ). Will do it eventually, but so far this Orville despite the flaws is pleasant and tickles that charming space adventure button. |

I'm exactly in ixis boat, don't know too much about Star Trek but this seems like a nice, light-hearted space adventure series to me.
And really, some of the episodes handle some really interesting, morally challenging concepts. The one where it turns out that the species with "only one gender" really has two genders but they operate the females to men during birth because it's a defect in their view... jeez. Really don't know what side I would choose. Light-hearted my ass.

Agreed, though the contrast between certain moments is still there and vibrant.
Here we are having fun with the Avis vs. Hertz challenge on who rents best, and after few minutes the episode ends with the cliffanger on the Krill mass murder and subsequent warning by the female Krill.
The series navigation seems based on sight, more than having an actual long-range scan: there's no connection nor purpose, atm.
Of course, we're still on the first episodes anyway

I don't really like Seth McFarlane much and from the first few episodes thought this was a bit meh.. I got bored and caught up on it, the cast are growing on me and the humour, thank god they dialed it back is starting to mix a lot better.
So far much better than STD, hopefully continues to get better.

It definitely feels more trek like than I thought it would and that's not a bad thing.
To me, I would describe it as a "current time sci-fi" if that makes sense. Meaning, the humor they typically use applies to our current time in real life but the show takes place in the future. So while I also agree that it is not as funny as when it started, I do think it makes the show more relatable simply because the characters all act like it's 2017.

Funny how they can put more empathy towards a random crew member than STD can for its main characters.
It still has quite a few flaws for me, but I'm cheering them on for trying and improving themselves along the way. It sure captures more of that good old ST feeling. |

Glad to hear that they'll dial the fart-jokes down a peg in later episodes. I like the light-hearted tone of the series so far, but the dick-jokes are really out-of-place.
Apart from Seth himself (never been a big fan of him as an actor), a big kudos to casting, most characters seem to have pretty good chemistry, not to mention the female leads being easy on the eye. Also, another huge thumbs-up for hiring Mrs. Sisko. Took me a bit to place her, good to see a Trek veteran on the crew. |
If you liked even the first episode, then I'm 95,68% sure that you'll have an absolute blast with the rest of the season. The chemistry between the characters gets increasingly better and stronger, there's more charm involved and each episode with its self-contained story has something interesting to say. What AndreaSpooky wrote is very true also (the season has a "randomized" progression so to speak likely due to the fact that there were no plans for the future), hopefully the renewal will push the writers to glue everything together and improve it even further. I can't make comparisons with the past but for me this show has become the prime dispenser of weekly feelgood TV moments in scifisauce 
As a complete ignorant I've tried watching STD too (the first three episodes, couldn't last any longer), but it was enough for me to call quits, it felt like a generic glossy thingy with no soul and inspired by dull sci-fi tropes designed to impress younger audiences :< |

Oook, first actual problem I have. I'm not comfortable how they handled that prepper guy in the Isaac/Doctor/Kids episode. Sure he imprisoned her, he was a nutjob (pretty much the only thing missing was him asking her to put the lotion in the basket), but he actually only tried to protect her from the "zombies" outside. He even risked going outside to get her the meds for the cut. In return he got stabbed in the gut and shot to death. That's kinda fucked up.
Good to see the show not trying to preach how "humans are sooo intellectually evolved now", but this one rubbed me the wrong way.

And then at the end of that ep she said to her kid to not kill them because it wasn't their fault or something like that. And iirc it was after she killed another one.
