first one is an i5 as well! so ofc the newer model. even if the old one was an i7 (for example the 7500u) the new i5 is superior (real quadcore + ht as well while the old ones are only dual cores with ht).

I would wait Ryzen laptops, iGPU is like double the performance of intel offerings and the CPU is very strong, their 4 core / 8 thread R7 2500U also has 15W TDP which is fucking insane.

Yes, +1 to that.

I'm doing the same as i want to upgrade my oldish Dell Latitude e6420 to something more mobile. (bought it used back then for cheap and it has a rather bad battery life and it looks demolished in some ways - its very sturdy though)
