Bob Barnsen wrote: | Wolfenstein 2 Designer Explains Why The Single-Player FPS Is Dying
Quote: | Spoiler: | Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is out October 27 and we're very excited, but as huge fans of the single-player story-based FPS, it hasn't escaped our notice that very few of them are being released these days, and most of them are from Bethesda. It didn't seem a long time ago that there were dozens of them, now they're rare. A little while ago we checked in with MachineGames Senior Games Designer Arcade Berg and he told us his opinion on why offline story-focused shooters are drying up.
Here's what Arcade had to say when we asked him why there aren't as many single-player FPSs these days, and unfortunately you can probably guess his main reason:
"Personal standpoint? A lot of it is probably money. A good solid multiplayer game will yield great revenue, and people will tell their friends to get a game to play it with them. A multiplayer game on console will require people to keep the disc, whereas a single-player game some people will return it or trade it once they’ve finished with it, and of course developers and publishers don’t see any money from trade-ins. That’s not the consumer’s fault, but there are a lot of aspects like that that get accounted for business-wise."
So to summarize, while the love for single-player shooters still exists it's very easy to finish a game once and trade it in, whereas a multiplayer or online game you have to keep, and you'll probably keep spending money on it. But that wasn't Arcade's only reason:
"Technology is also a factor too. Broadband is de facto now, so that’s changed the playing field a lot."
Indeed, it's only the last generation of consoles (Xbox 360 and PS3) where internet gaming on consoles really took off, and now in the PS4/Xbox One era you have to have a fast internet connection on your console otherwise you'll barely be able to turn it on.
Arcade also assured us that, despite these problems, there were still the same amount of developers out there who wanted to do single-player games. "A lot of developers still creatively love to do single-player campaigns just as much as ever, because that’s how you can really tell the story." Then again, he understood the love of multiplayer games. He said, "I’m sure that the developers also want to . MachineGames just works on single-player games, but multiplayer’s just as fun and exciting!”
With EA closing Visceral Games because they were making a Star Wars game that was "linear and story-driven" and the likes of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds continuing to grow and grow, it's sad to see the single-player-only story-driven shooter get less popular with publishers - and it's even more important to celebrate a game like Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, which doesn't have any online functionality at all. |

Maybe in the 'AAA' side, not indie, there will always be offline play from indie devs.
P.S, Bob, does this game blocked on your country as well? I am stuck to either ISODEMO or VPN as well

Steam Page of this game shows up for you?

Gonna surprise some people here, but I doubt this game being region locked to my country is anything to do we the laws in my country... as CODWW2 is not locked at all, I think it's more to do with the publisher decision.
And Classic Wolfensteins games are not locked as well here..
Anyway, I am probably going to use the known "workarounds" to play this game.

Yeah I see the page in my steam:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/650500/Wolfenstein_II_The_New_Colossus/
I remember that the older wolfenstein games ( new blood etc ) had a IP lock for like ~6 months if you bought the game in austria/netherlands etc.. I dont know if it'll be the same, germany is very strict when it comes to the good old hakenkreuz and general nazi symbols ( in video games only ).
Nevermind, it says this on the steam page for me "Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus German Edition EULA"

Yep, what KS wrote.
We Germans see the game, but the swastikas are not there.
Well, it's still better than the game landing on the index here and not being allowed to get sold at all.
I don't know, but i find it kind of funny that the the country where all this started, is still the most butthurt about showing some symbol of the past.
It's not like other countries probably have even more neo-nazis than we.

I guess it safe to say There are actually more severe laws in Germany(and probably Austria) against anything related to Nazism then Israel as there are no actual rules against using it's symbols here(surprise?)
Though for obvious reasons You won't see them on public from virtually anyone here..
As I said, It probably more of publisher decision to block this game to my country..
If Movies like Inglourious Basterds could be freely allowed to be here at cinemas(which also contain nazi symbols but with mild age restriction) I don't see any reason to block a game that is basically criticism of nazism as well...

@bobby: if the game in its original form would get released in germany it wouldnt land on the "index". it would get confiscated and gets a sweet little spot on list b which is under criminal law
still that doenst mean its illegal to own or buy it, its illegal to sell it. thats it. and thats where all import versions will end of this game. so totally legal to buy the english version outside of germoney. has nothing to due with a rating from the usk, its a law thing and a judge will have to. this time even the austrians get the german version, normally they get an uncensored game.
and: german version only has german language (they dont want to modifiy the english text etc to fit the censorship). and maybe like before bethesda sets a region lock for the international version. thats nothing they are forced to due, but since they even bring out the censored version in austria (they officially said their lawyer urgently advised them to do so) its very likely that a region lock will be there

Maybe they dab instead of salute... would make sense then.
Also they don't gas jews, they vape em.
One of many laws that was formed in a different time and mindset which in 2017 seems rather silly. We seem to cling too long on these things before a change is made. Heck quite a few that not even survive a decade before they feel old

It's not in the EULA for Wolfenstein and got removed from The Evil Within 2 before release, so I'm assuming Bethesda is done with Denuvo.

Good news for pc gamers for now, hope EA and Ubisoft will follow.
The problem is, in the near future, some shitty new kind of protection will appear again... unfortunately.

Yeah, it's not like Bethesda had a sudden change of heart, it's just that Denuvo gets cracked so fast now that its benefits are outweighed by positive PR from not having it and pretending like they care about their customers.

Wut... is it really that the English version cannot be even activated in Germany / Austria?
I'm bit confused when trying to browse through the Wolfenstein: New Colossus German Edition steam discussions...
(OR if activated, cannot be played without VPN -> same as if you cannot really activate it)

In regard of the activation in germany. i think it will be the same as the last wolfenstein, you can buy the row version, activate it with vpn and then wait for 90 days and the lock will be removed. in the meantime you can wait for a crack or let the hype grow.

I remember the first Castle Wolfenstein and the sequel. Between the digitized voices and procedural rooms, it was a fun game. Also very tense. If you left bodies around or shot people, the SS would hunt you down and they were hard to kill too. The only other game I was nervous to play was the Alien game from the first movie in the series.
