What's the best way to tell if a film has the subtitles appear only when they're needed? Like hard-coded.
I grabbed a Blu-ray version of apes. The release had comments thanking for the subs only appearing when the apes spoke but once I had it, it came with the usual .srt file and a .sub file.
So ran packed the .srt file in the folder and it's all or nothing with the subs.. Either on the for the whole film, or nothing on and having to manually turn them on when needed (apes talking).

It's been a looongg time but usually the sub files are the raw file from the disc, and it should have a forced flag to just show forced subs.
Srt are the converted subtitle file, that show everything within the file that's been ripped out of the original sub file, so if someone's made the Srt file as full subs, then that's all they'll show.
My advice, go search for the forced sub version of the srt, I'm sure it's out thee by now.
edit: i downloaded the blow 1080p, which has forced subs included in the release just for ape speak, so either download that release, or find the forced subs from that release.

Overall, its not bad. Pretty decent. Enjoy.
honestly, bluray is super close, probably within a week, so just wait for that... unless you have kids that wont shut up and give you a moments peace, in which case they probably wont care about the audio
