They're written well.
You're hating the coward.
You're trying to understand the capn.
You saw what the blackie went through and that she's not a baddie and you sympathize with her and her struggle.
Crew doesn't see her as a female incapable of shit but a mutineer who can't be trusted.
They haven't seen her full story and the only person who accepts her is Captain Hook.

Finally they changed this problematic, sexist series of misogyny.
STD is the best!

I'm not hating the coward actually, but you're right, he's written to be hated since the evil alien dared to betray the courageous black female.
The series isn't BAD because of it, but I just recognize a certain pattern: the men all being given a less than favourable role and the women getting all the best reps, the most screen time, etc. Again, very Ghostbuster-like where they did exactly the same thing.
The actual premise of the series is quite good - I just wished they'd stop forcing their SJW agenda on series such as these. It's like Sulu being forced to be gay in the last Star Trek movie - I understood when Takei wasn't too happy with it because they single handedly changed a character just to pander instead of using a new character to do it with.
Also, this is the first Star Trek series where they have a protagonist - the other series had a core of characters that would all get their own story told (except perhaps TOS which focused on Kirk a lot) so the fact it's a black woman who happens to mostly talk to other women ... well at least make the women a little more interesting ffs. The captain and the cowardly alien seem more interesting than all the rest thrown together so far.

I actually like Captain Hook.
He seems like a hard ass who doesn't follow the rules.
Here's the thing... if you're going to look for "tropes" you're going to find them.
I'm not seeing these sjw things.
A strong female is not a sjw.
A fragile male is not an sjw.
A warmonger is not an sjw.
They replaced she's not good enough because woman to she can't be trusted because mutiny.
It's not snowflake propaganda. Otherwise she'd be captain of her ship on episode 3.

It's not as much about isolated examples as it's seeing patterns in series and movies the past few years. You can forgive Ghostbusters in just the same way as you're defending this show yet it's painfully well known that the story was written to be pro-women and anti-men from the get-go.
You're right, when looking at single characters, there isn't much to notice. Throw it all together, and you're seeing a pattern. You're not touching on the skewed screen time, for example. And yeah, like I said, I like the captain and the second in command because they actually have flaws and feel like real people but they still get the worst traits assigned to them while the women get all the best.
And because of this, I do NOT like the protagonist so far. They have made her too special, too smart, too whatever. Sisko was made the emisary in DS9 but at least he wasn't flawless and had struggling with his role. Despite Rainsford being called a mutineer, she's still considered "the smartest officer in Starfleet", a wunderchild with secret Vulcan knowledge, selfless, etc. etc. I don't recall any main Star Trek character being given so many positive traits from the get-go. They tried to do it with Wesley Crusher and we all known how that turned out ...
And in that sense, I wonder how much their agenda caused them to give the black female not only the lead (which is unusual for Star Trek as I have showed before) but also such a list of skills and benefits to work with.

@red_avatar So how would you "fix" the show? Give women less screen time and make them less positive? Make the men equally positive? So are the women not allowed to be presented in a better light, ever, nor given more screen time than men? Because as soon as they do, they fit that "pattern" of yours. How is that not chauvinist (regardless of who and of what belief wrote the show)?

Ghostbusters only had one well written female character.
This Star Trek is about Michael. She's the main character. The captain isn't.
And that's fine with me. Michael is a very interesting character
The captain is also a very interesting character, hopefully we will know more about him.
They developed Michael decently, everyone else is essentially already established in their own universe. Michael on the other hand was second in command, turned mutineer.
I don't see the whole forced womyn agenda or snowflake agenda. If you take away the mutineer and the fact she's a woman... yes. But they were smart and added the mutiny thing... now she doesn't have to prove she's good enough because she's a woman, but she has to prove she's good enough even though she disobeyed direct orders.
So you're the one missing the main plot point and focusing on an agenda that isn't there. If Michael wasn't the main character and just a side character - would you be complaining how everyone is all fuck that hoe and few little exposition points that make her the character she is?
This isn't some sjw propaganda. If you're seeing it for some weird reason it's because you were fed the whole ghostbusters bull shit and other anti-sjw shit. You know what's sjw shit? Tomb raider the game. Poorly written character with a plethora or self diagnosed mental illnesses. Ghostsbusters the reboot. Poorly written characters with little to no story.
This... you have well written characters - they replaced sjw-isms with she's a mutineer. That's smart. That's how it should be. It's in your face, but it's not... she's a woman. She's disenfranchised. She has no privilege. She's struggling because she's a stron black woman.
You're looking to hate the show because you were fed some bullshit that doesn't apply here. You're missing what the show is centered around - who the show is centered around and you think it's some sjw bull shit.
If you don't like the show... don't like the show... but don't spout bull shit that doesn't apply. She's victimized and she's struggling and people hate her not because she's a woman. Because she fucked up and saved her crew and it fucked her career. She's getting all the on screen time because the show is centered around her and her self pity bull shit because she feels responsible for betraying her crew, and her captain.
Would it be more interesting if it were just about the crew? Sure. We're only three episodes in. I could very well be wrong. In the eps I've seen so far I'm not seeing sjw bull shit. Maybe it'll be obvious and evident in the next episodes.
And the special skills - lol. Please... she's fragile... she has her problems and they're shown. She's not secure about herself, about who she is... she has a lot to learn. It's pretty evident.

Orville is a bigger budget TOS Star Trek with cheesier lines.
The crew doesn't care it gets to explore the galaxy. theyre all half wits. It's like... if Dave Chappell was a captain. His crew would consists of all his friends and since they can't hit anything in space they would just get high 24/7.

This feels (apart from the hit and miss humour) very close to original startrek series
Weird to be more excited about The Orville than about ST:D

Somehow didn't like this episode. Still everyone is an asshole and in IRL this ship would not function properly with such crew.

That scene was so retarded, I laughed out loud.
The Klingons sound like they have cotton wool in their mouths and Not Alan Tudyk is still an unbearable douche.

I'm sorry but...
Spoiler: | |
this "thing" is really going south, now even faster.
Propulsion systems using mushrooms, Doom monsters, commander willing to tame them "because I say so", warp visual effects worth of the worst Scooby Doo effects...
Just "wtf".

WTF was that
Spoiler: | Did they cut the actress who plays the tactical officer ( the one from BSG) from the show or WTF was that in this episode ? Seriously, that was the most retarded death ever, i rly though she would ressurect somehow, jesus christ.
Did she not fucking said 20sec earlier how this monster´s hide absorbs phasers set to lethal, yet she orders her to turn off the fucking field and steps up with a laser rifle. WHY DIDNT SHE JUST open a small portion of the field to shoot through, just like michael did in the first episode |

Well
Spoiler: | She released the sedation gas and thought the creature wasn't conscious (she was planning to cut off a part of it using the knife). |
It was sillier to me
Spoiler: | that Michael decided to open the force field fully to "test a theory" which could have been very deadly. She could at least have told the redhead girl to get out instead of risking her life as well. Or you know, just opened the force field partially (which was show as possible earlier).
But that's just one of many little problems with the plot. I've learned to ignore them, the writing is not likely to get any better, leaving it at mediocre at best. Also hating the spore drive and related "science". |
