Quote:
Bryan Cranston is set to both star in and executive produce "Electric Dreams: The World of Philip K. Dick," a ten-part anthology drama series for Sony Pictures Television and Channel 4.

Each episode is set to be a standalone drama, adapted and modernized for global audiences by a creative team of British and American writers. The series will both illustrate the writer's prophetic vision and celebrate the enduring appeal of his works.

Michael Dinner ("Justified") and Ronald Moore ("Battlestar Galactica") will also executive produce the project which will be based on the short stories by award-winning sci-fi novelist Philip K. Dick.

Dick's works have been previously been adapted for the screen with such films as "Blade Runner," "Total Recall," "Minority Report" and "The Adjustment Bureau" along with shows such as "The Man in the High Castle".

You missed one bit. Far more importantly than Dinner and Moore being executive producers - a title a bunch of people can hold without contributing creatively - they are also the writers. Smile

Creatively,

on TV:
Showrunner > Writers > Directors

on film:
Director > Writer

TWIN PEAKS is "something of a miracle."
"...like nothing else on television."
"a phenomenon."
"A tangled tale of sex, violence, power, junk food..."
"Like Nothing On Earth"

Sounds similar to The Ray Bradbury Theater, other than the author already being dead.

Amazon has landed U.S. rights to the anthology series “Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams” from Sony Pictures Television.

“Outlander” and “Battlestar Galactica” show runner Ronald D. Moore is teaming with “Breaking Bad” star turned producer Bryan Cranston on the ten episode project which was produced by UK’s Channel 4.

The series will feature adaptations of the revered science fiction author’s works which resulted in such films as “Blade Runner,” “Minority Report” and “Total Recall”. Cranston is expected to appear in at least one episode.

“Mudbound” helmer Dee Rees will pen one of the episodes along with Tony Grisoni (“Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas”), Jack Thorne (“Harry Potter and the Cursed Child”) Matthew Graham (“Life on Mars”), David Farr (“The Night Manager”), Michael Dinner (“Justified”), Travis Beacham (“Pacific Rim”) and Moore himself.

One hour long version of a scanner darkly MIGHT work.
Screamers might work.
Golden Man might work... Whole episode being a set of loops only to find out it's all one loop.
Kinda HARD to do what DICK wrote into an hour long thing.... Especially when it comes to Dick.

Adams would be a lot easier and he has done a shit load of stories that could easily be adapted truthfully. Heck even asimov would be easier.

Lovecraft would be easiest. Set the tone ala netflix's lemony snicket and just do bizarre tales...

Indeed, excellent news and premise. I always liked Cranston, so I'll trust his producer picks Very Happy Let's see how this develops!

A film was made over a decade ago starring Keanu Reeves and Robert Downey Jr.

1 and 2 are still amazing.

A Scanner Darkly is also a novel, not a short story.

That said, this is fucking awesome news.
So Much Win So Much Win

I just read a compilation of his short stories, and there are some real gems in there.

Like the old lady traveling through alternative universes only so she could sell stuff from her shop for a small fortune, or the team of scientists from the future traveling to 1960 to interview people with 'psychic abilities', only to discover they were just sci fi writers.

Some stories are a bit more out there than others, or are a bit dated, but they're all good and intriguing.

Blade Runner meets Babylon 5. Pretty good. 7/10

It's only the intro that was super bad and I almost deleted the whole episode because of it.

The first ep was a nice idea executed fairy well. The second ep was pointless bullshit. It's all much too shallow IMO, ideas worked out in a very simple manner.

Couldn't get through EP1. VERY low production value (these polystyrene sets Laughing ), the acting was meh at best.
It reeks of holistic cheapness.
HARD pass.

2/10

Great series so far. Loved the first episode, the second one as consolitis says, cute and charming. There's lots of great actors playing here, so I guess we'll see some fine episodes Smile

I watched the intro. Was a tryhard fringe intro.
Better than that tryhard twilight zone intro.

First episode was so-so, I thought. Some known actors that ate up most of the budget it seems because the sets really felt cheap Laughing story didn't really go anywhere and was basically just premise for something more.

Yup, interesting scenarios/ideas but the actual stories seem to go nowhere.
I haven't read much of PKD but this seems to be a common theme.
Created some awesome worlds far ahead of the time but the actual storylines are severely lacking and he didn't know how to properly close them.
Maybe that's why so many movies are only based on Philip. K. Dick but often contain very different storylines.

The way I see it, it's more about the bitterness, the dystopian. Think Amazing Stories or The Twilight Zone.
First episode
 Spoiler:

hence the dystopian.
Second episode is more like a classic tale
 Spoiler:

hence the bitterness.

Just my 2 cents.

That's mostly because his books are sometimes difficult to translate to film or are too complex for idiot audiences Very Happy
The short stories are always 'complete', in that they have a proper ending, usually with some twist. I really recommend them, they are timeless.

Minority Report, for example, is about 3 precogs predicting a staff member (Anderton) commiting a murder and he then tries to prevent this from happening. That's what the movie takes to built on and it becomes more of a classic cat & mouse, conspiracy thing.

The short story goes a lot further into the concept of precogs and how the future/timelines can change if they are observed and you know the results of your actions and if there's such a thing as free will despite all this knowledge.

It basically blew my fucking mind when I read it, especially considering it was written way back in 1956 and it's only like 10 pages.

Precogs don't see exactly the same future but always with a few seconds of delay of each other.
Precog 1 sees the murder happening, and Anderton observes this. Because he knows his future actions, he just has to stay away from the crime scene, and he thus changes the future.
Precog 2 sees this alternative future (changed the moment Anderton saw the footage of precog 1). But he then observes the alternative timeline and the results of him not commiting the crime which is worse as the precog program (his life's work) will be shut down, so he decides to go ahead with the murder.
Precog 3 sees this 3rd alternative future (changed the moment Anderton saw the footage of precog 2).

So the book ends when he does kill the guy, and realises that he does it because there are an uneven number of precogs and he ultimately questions whether he had any choice in the matter anyway.

There must have been a door there in the wall, when I came in.

It's classic Dick: reality mixed with dream inside possible future scenarios.
I actually liked the first 2 episodes, it's surely better this way of telling sci-fi than the new Star Trek shit.
