I'll be surprised if it surpasses the blandness of its predecessor with Sawyer still in charge. His German heritage ensures that having fun is verboten.
It will most likely improve when it comes to combat, AI and such, but story/writing/characters could still be bland i guess.. what they need is eager and fresh blood, people who are very inspired and driven (not sure if that producer is new?).. Not people who's doing the "daily chores".

As far as I know, the lead narrative designer this time around is Carrie Patel (who worked on the first Pillars and expansions), since the previous lead (Fenstermaker) is temporarily on a hiatus. There are some freelancers as well, plus Sawyer supervising as per usual and interns hired for the fluff work, let's really hope for the best.
I kind of consider the whole Pillars setting fairly irredeemable anyway. Hopefully whatever remaining talent Obsidian have went to the Cain/Boyarsky project.

Game Writer Resigns After Social Justice Warriors Crucify Him For Conservative Opinions
A game developer and writer for an upcoming video game was forced to resign Tuesday from his job after feminists and social justice activists on Reddit uncovered politically incorrect statements he had once posted on a gaming forum.
Casey Hollingshead, a writer contracted to produce content for the upcoming role-playing game Pillars of Eternity 2, was outed by members of the social justice community “GamerGhazi” on Reddit who managed to track down his posts to a forum called RPG Codex. They catalogued his posts, much of which they considered offensive in content.
Posting under the name “sser,” Hollingshead remarked that feminist game critic Anita Sarkeesian was a “huckster,” and accused her of feigning interest in video games to push her progressive ideology. He also called Zoe Quinn, the game developer whose undisclosed relationships with game journalists served as the catalyst for “GamerGate,” a “sociopath.”
Hollingshead was highly critical of social justice warriors in the video game industry, lambasting their efforts to shoehorn progressive storylines and characters into gaming.
Must be thumbnail but that guy in the pink shirt has breasts...or perhaps just a shirt that's a bit too tight fitting, eh let's call it Youtube compression like every other fault or flaw people occasionally nitpick on for these videos.
EDIT: Well it wasn't just the thumbnail, someone's been doing extreme pec training or how it's called.
I found this quite funny, but of course, I'm not one of those people who dislike Josh Sawyer. There must be a good atmosphere on this project if they make stuff like this, that's good.
Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire signs publisher Versus Evil
Quote:
Crowdfunded sequel Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire has a publisher. It isn't Paradox, which published Pillars 1, but Versus Evil, publisher of The Banner Saga series.
There's no concrete release date to go with the announcement but an "early 2018" window for PC, Linux and Mac.
"We are thrilled to be working with the team at Versus Evil on Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, the first sequel we've ever made into one of our own IPs," said Feargus Urquhart, co-owner and CEO of the game's developer, Obsidian Entertainment.
Was just reading that. Some interesting results, particularly the indication that DLC is shit and expansions are what people really want, although I'm not sure if it is likely to change anything.
TB combat might improve it somewhat, but that is just one element. Slapping TB combat into POE1 wouldn't have fixed the terrible narrative. I'm not holding my breath that POE2 will significantly diverge from the dour and joyless experience of the first game, given that it is still under the control of Obersturmführer Sawyer.
1. She's cute.
2. Sucks that they're still going with that meh UI and combat system.
3. It's great that they're finally adding the ability to customize character AI exactly how I want it so I don't have to pause the game to handhold every 4 seconds (assuming it works).
I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

@Immunity
I agree on 1. and the GUI.
But why is the combat system meh? I think it's okay for this kind of game that they go with the classic combat system ala Baldurs Gate or other D&D games.
