|
 |
Hi everyone!
So I sold my oculus rift and I have some cash to spend!
There are 2 choices (my rig is in the signature and it's doing 12ku in firestrike btw)
a)Ryzen 1600+b350 mobo + 16 gb of ram (I can sell my 2500k and mobo for 100$ probably)
b)Get 144hz screen (can sell my iiyama for about 150$)
So I am more leaning towards the screen since I do not believe new cpu/mobo.ram combo will get me much better performance. I also changed psu recently to evga g2 and even case to fractal define C, so it's all quiet, good temps and psu is stable for whatever it's worth.
Anyway - here is how my setup looks today:
Spoiler: | |
I got my iiyama at the beginning of 2016. It's AMVA+ 24'' 60hz 1080p panel. It have great 3000:1 contrast with good blacks, medicore viewing angles due to gamma shift and bad ghosting. Playing isaac I can see short trail even with overdrive set to 3(and overshoot too). It's not unacceptable but worse than TN or IPS.
Also - I had it returned last month due to some problems with dead line of pixels and they sent me a new one. This one have a bit worse uniformity, seems yellow in one edges and and have speck of dust between backlight and panel in one place. But it's still ok.
So I am kinda leaning towards new monitor. As You can see I have space for 27'', so it would probably have to be 1440p. Then it would be nice if it was 144hz (I loved my 120hz eizo crt back in 2003)... but then my gpu would struggle to run games at good fps anyway... so it would probably need gsync to be able to play at fluctuating low fps.
Now I run games at vsync 60fps + 60fps lock with riva tuner for good framepacing.
Then there is a choice of panel. I had one of each and here is how I remember them:
a)I had samsung Tn in 2007. Terrible viewing angles and poor contrast.
b)I had dell IPS until beginning of 2016. Great viewing angles, kinda washed out colors. Horrible, just terrible ips glow. Almost unusable at night with shows, dark games and so on. I much more liked TN blacks.
C)AMVA (va) iiyama - great contrast and blacks, terrible ghosting and medicore viewing angles due to gamma shift. One of corners is always off.
so I think I would rate them VA>=TN>IPS
Any idea what is out there? I guess I have about 700$ to spend... Not sure if it should be curved or not too. Or if I should get it at all. I do not play overwatch or cs go.

No. If you're not into esport titles, such as CS:GO or so that can run at high framerates with the average Joe's GPU/CPU, there's no point.

I see. But wouldn't 144hz even with lower fps and gsync feel better than 60hz?
I mean - the fps can go up to the 144fps, but if not it should still feel better? I don't know.. never used lcd with more than 60hz and never seen gsync.
If no, is there any point in getting 1440p, 60hz 27 inch screen with gsync? Or are there no screens like that?

So maybe I could just get 1080p gsync va screen then. There seem to be few of those. but 1080p will look crappy at 27ich probably. Well I am not getting ips because of ips glow either.
edit: There seem to be only ONE 1080p, 144hz, g-sync monitor. It's 27inch
Acer Predator Z271T
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Acer-Predator-Tracking-Assassins-Syndicate/dp/B01N7J0Z9U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1504278084&sr=8-1&keywords=Acer+Predator+Z271T
It's overpriced, gay gamer looking and have tobi dick tracking for whatever reason. Not interested I guess
edit: dell s2716dg (and dell s2417dg) looks pretty interesting. It's a tn panel but I would still prefer it to ips glow I guess... and it reviews great. Would like VA/amva over others but there are no gsync va panels except for samsung curved quantum dot panels without gsync which seem to have plenty of problems. Still not sure what upgrade would this be to me
Then there are people who say to not use any syn at 144hz because there is no tearing... It's a mess. Where are oled 1080p/2k monitors 60/144hz

If you're not running over 60fps, going for 144hz isn't gonna be worth it. You don't HAVE to reach 144 fps for the 144hz to be useful (90fps will show you improvements, 120fps will show you improvements) but if you're running a game at 60fps, it'll be a waste. Considering you still have a 2500k, I don't consider 144hz to be very realistic. 1440p would also come with increased requirements, but would be easier to reach.
Having a bad monitor can severely impact your gaming experience and since you seem unhappy with the visual quality of the one you have, I can see a benefit to changing it. Personally, if I was in your shoes, I'd ignore all of 1440p / 144hz / gsync / curved since they'll increase the price of the monitor, and instead go for an affordable but quality 1080p 60hz monitor. And since that won't require that you spend your entire budget - not even half of your budget if you have 700$ - I would then go for the new CPU.
If you truly want more than a 1920x1080 60hz monitor, then I'd recommend to start by improving your build (both CPU and GPU) and save money to buy a new monitor later down the line.

That all sounds fine and is reasonable. 1060 g1 is running everything at 60fps but not sure how much more since I always use vsync.
I think it would be ideal to get 60fps monitor with gsync. It would totally help with fps fluctuation 30-60fps and I could max out graphics. But those thing do not exist.
Not sure what 1080p monitor would be better than mine though so maybe I would just go for new mobo/cpu/ram anyway.
I just remember on my old crt is was HUGE difference of 60 vs 120hz no matter if I was hitting 120fps or not.

Guys help me out!
G sync was invented to make 30-60fps dips feel less noticeable and eliminate all stuttering/bad framepacing. Recently Hellblade was running 50-80 fps and it was kinda annoying. I understand that g-sync would help it greatly.
If panel is 144hz, then g sync operates in 30-144fps range. In most games today I hit 60+... with some like Doom, like 150fps. But that is only one aspect of the screen. The other is just quality of panel

My CPU is better than yours, my GPU is equal. I bought a 144hz to play competitive games with lower system requirements at high fps. Modern games with great graphics aren't gonna run at 100fps on our systems, except for Doom.
If you're considering using gsync to prevent your games dipping below 60fps, you shouldn't even think about games running over 60fps. If those dips happen often enough that you want to buy a gsync monitor specifically to fight against them, I'd consider improving your PC to fight against those dips too.

You got it all wrong.... Nothing dips below 60fps for the most parts. I am just saying that g sync would help with that. And with 144hz gsync, You can play with no framerate limit and it should all feel smooth no matter if its 50 to 100 fps.
But overall I get from this thread that I shouldn't change my monitor... yet on other forums or reddit, people are going crazy how gsync is greatest update next to ssd lol.

The 24'' 144Hz 1080p TN panels are not very good. If you want another G-Sync for cheap that will cost you around 450-500 bucks and you only have like 3 options - Dell S2417DG (TN), the older Acer Z271 (VA) and the Lenovo Y27g (VA). The VA models lack ULMB and of the two the Acer has better overdrive than the Lenovo.
With FreeSync you have much more options, but you would have to get AMD card next or grow a beard waiting for NV to start supporting it.

Forget 1080p resolution monitors at 27" size, you can touch the pixels on the screen, its that bad. 2560x1440 is the way to go, 4K is overkill tho.

Yeah, hence the wait for the next ti.
The next generation combined with the new 4k screens, always staying in the 27" size will be at last the first true combination of 4k screen with 1 single video card that will surely always give 60fps+ 100% of the time.
Right now a 1080 ti can do about 75 to 80% of games at 60+ on 4k.
Just not there yet...2019 will be the year I suppose.

Why I dont see anyone talking about eizo monitors ike foris fg2421. 1080p, 120 and 240hz, Va panrl with 5000:1 contrast ratio! That puts even my 3000:1 iiyama to shame.
I dont think ive seen any 5000 contrast monitor. Is only eizo doing it? Are there downgrades? At this point, 120hz is just a nice bonus lol.

Yeah most of the FG2421 do 4200-4800:1 contrast in practice.
Upgrades from iiyama: refresh rate, motion blur reduction, contrast, semi-glossy coating
Downgrades: smaller size, worse colours, worse viewing angles, more black crush, QC lottery
Neutral: no G-sync/FreeSync
It's sold out almost anywhere, maybe get it used? You can get the Samsung C24FG70 for like 280€ now, it has much better colours, but lower contrast than the Eizo. Both have some issues with purple overshoot/ghosting.

It is amazing. I totally love this thing... but it's not there just yet. i've played and finished what I wanted and essentially got what I wanted out of it and sold it with a little profit.
It's not something to be used so often to warrant the hassle associated with it like cables, cameras, sweat and blurriness. But still - paintball in rec room is eye opening moment. holy shit

yeah there arent many games for it.
The thing that interests me the most is playing through alien isolation in VR, and maybe resi7. (but thats yet to come out on PC with VR)

i think I will wait.
I much prefer better Contrast and black levels rather than high refresh rate or 2k.
So my screen with it's 3000:1 and acceptable ghosting is still ok.
Unfortunately Eizo FG2421 is no longer sold. It was a 120hz VA panel with 5000:1 contrast. That is something I would probably want to pick up nowadays.
I am not getting back into TN and especially shitty IPS(fuck this overrated crap)

Get a curved ultrawide (VA), preferably samsung and enjoy, so immersive after 16:9 box screens (21:9 support is also very good these days).
