Now that my "man cave" is nearing completion, I reserved a corner for a desk that has both my 1994 IBM Aptiva 486 SX 33Mhz (my favorite retro PC with lots of fond memories) and a IBM Aptiva PII 350Mhz (bought ultra cheap 10 years ago).

The PII 350Mhz is no issue since it can be connected to the network but the 486SX is proving to be harder to deal with. I basically, want to exchange files easily - I got a huge library of DOS games (200GB of it) while the internal hard drive only has 80MB left so you can imagine I can only play a few games at a time.

So I need to find a way to transfer data. Does anyone have any idea? Maybe some kind of floppy emulator that uses SD cards? Right now, I have to burn CDs which is hardly ideal.

the 486 machine should have atleast 2 pci ports, what about buying an old ethernet card which offers drivers for dos/win 3.11/win95? problem solved (though win95 should be a pain in the ass on that 33mhz machine, it was crap on the dx 66 too). win 3.11 should work fine for network stuff since its compatible with tcp/ip (you need to install that feature seperately).but maybe it only works via netbios, dunno if newer version than xp support that. there are even isa cards with rj45 ports. so i dont see a problem (would send you a bunch of cards, but i think the shipping would cost way too much Wink)

Have you tried a serial port net connect, i think that both comps should have it. All you need is a serial cable if you can get one now.

One of the original serial port functions was to connect two computers to transfer large files. Me and my friend used to connect our comps through it to play multi-player games Sad

Found this:

I know, but that is the only way he can do it if he wants to keep his old comp exp., and I doubt that his large files are large when we are talking about dos, win 3.11 and win 95. Wink

would still go for the ethernet link, shouldnt be a problem (and is way more comfortable) to use win 3.11 to transfer files even if the card would only support 10mbit. even if the local network file sharing service doesnt work properly -> you most likely could still use netscape or internet explorer on 3.11 to access a cloud storage or internally set up ftp server

I did contemplate using ethernet links but I wasn't sure how easy it would be to connect to a modern system. I do have a PCI slot free I believe - I'd have to check. It may be an ISA as well.

Not sure how you can share that much stuff easily Wink. Most of it isn't that hard to find online, though.

These are ISO images of the "Super MIX" CD compilations from the nineties. Folders are numerated so you need to read the covers (included in archive) to see which game is where. You also need to know how to handle DDI floppy images. The covers include all needed instructions how to do it, but it's in Serbian.
