There really is no other game you can compare it to, it is it's own unique beast, and either you love it or you hate it, I for one am always totally addicted to the gameplay.
Is there much of a difference between the PS3 and PS4 versions? I only have a PS3 currently, but might be getting a PS4 down the line this year sometime, wondering if it's fine to fire ahead with it now or be patient and get it later.

Thank you guys, I guess I'll just have to try it then. I'll probably like it since I like both anime and JRPGs. Time to dust off my old PS3.
Mind though that you will have to put aside alot of time, it is the longest jrpg ever made, going by main story completion, which takes most people 110-120 hrs on average. I have not finished the game yet, but having passed the halfway point at ca. 70 hrs, i can attest to that.
If you do the side quests and don't rush through Palaces, your level should be ample. Same went for Persona 4 - it's a very story-centered game with combat maybe 15% of the content.
I just finished the game - level 74 and 103 hours of playing. Amazing game and on par with Persona 4 for the impact it had on me. For the few things it did worse, there were plenty of things it did better including the much longer final with a much better peak with a nice long ending to top it off.
What this game has, is exactly what I find missing in too many games these days: it makes you really want to keep playing with a story that makes things personal and draws you in big time. With the many side stories to uncover combined with the need to raise stats, it never bores, never feels like a grind and never feels repetitive. For a jRPG, they sure knew what mistakes not to make.
the game is so stylish that it makes you WANT to grind
Pretty much. Right from that start, it is so stylish. Love it.
The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don’t always spoil the good things and make them unimportant.

rythm game. japanese devs being japanese, as usual - this reminds me of the shit square did with FF X-2 and i'm still wondering why sega didn't jump on the "WELL WE MADE A SERIOUS GAME NOW LET'S DO A FUCKING MUSICAL" - train after the idol part in yakuza 5
I bought the game, considering it's highly acclaimed. After two hours, I don't know what to think of it. I do see the potential, and I love TB combat, but it's a weird one. I find the story a bit ridiculous atm, childish really. The amount of loading screens also pisses me off. Ryuji, my sudden best buddy, is irritating me.
I assume two hours isn't nearly long enough to judge whether I like it or not. How long does it take for it to get going?

It takes at least 5-6 hours - at LEAST. The start is rather slow in introducing everyone. Persona 4 had a far better start since you immediately had likable characters whereas in 5, you got to slowly meet the characters one by one.
Am I supposed to do castles in one go? I'm trying not to read guides to not spoil myself, but some things are a bit confusing. I defeated the guardian in the chapel/gym in the first castle, I'm starting to run out of SP and items. Am I supposed to go on untill I've used up every SP/HP item?
nah relax, you mostly have a couple of weeks for the palaces, take it slowly but try to reach the end of the palace sooner rather than later, so you always have a few days left over to do stuff at your leisure.
many palaces you cant even finish in one go due to story aspects, like something from the real world being necessary to get ahead in the palace etc.
you should have atleast 14-15 tries/days for any palace in the game
So I can just quit and come back when I wish? Is there some point I should absolutely reach before going to the real world?
How strict is the time limit you get? I don't have to min/max, but I'd hate it if I miss content. Do I have to micro-manage every free time I get, to not gimp my team?
You can fast travel to any safe room you unlock in a given Palace, so just do as much as you can before your party runs out of SP. Time limits depend on story, but they usually aren't too severe.
As for micromanagement - you kinda do have to do it, since it's a part of the game. There are different kinds of activities, and some affect battles more than others (almost everything you do has some kind of significance however).
You should always do a dungeon till you secured the route to the treasure. Since days in the game are limited to max out social skills & confidant. If you cannot do it because of SP, just buy sp adhesive 3 or whatever.
The first dungeon took me two days, some enemies were getting too tough. I don't really care about maxing out things and I'm probably fucking some things up, but I take my time.
While I had my doubts in the beginning, the game begins to get addicting. There are things I really don't like, but overall it's a good game. I don't understand why it's so bad graphically though, some things are really low res. The extreme amount of loading screens is also ridiculous. Technically it's crap IMO, but the gameplay is great.
doing a dungeon in 2 days is fast enough, especially if you dont want to min/max everything, which would be a headache in this game and only doable in a single playthrough via elaborately planning out every single week. For normal completion the game gives you plenty of time to do everything, the time limits are very relaxed and only as stressy as you make it for yourself, like I did
Yeah, I think pushing for completing dungeons in one day might be too much, since they're often pretty big and there aren't that many ways to regen SP. It just makes the game more frustrating than necessary, while not really offering you all that much - the few additional points you'll get probably won't even matter. I usually used two days to secure the route and then another day to get the treasure, excluding some additional problems (like having to go back to real world to get over some obstacle).
Time constraints are one of the things that make this series so good, IMO, but I'm not a big fan of how often P5 takes control away from you. Every time you find a new target, you basically have to click through several days of dialogue and your hands are tied when it comes to character progression or side activities. What's even more irritating, the dialogue / messages often repeats the same shit over and over again. I recently played through Persona 4: Golden on my Vita and I feel like that game is a lot more open, after you get through the first 15 hours, at least. Of course, it has it's own set of problems too (like dreadfully bad dungeons).
I think Persona 5 is very generous with it comes to time limits. You can easily complete dungeons in a third of the time given. What you mainly have to do, is learn how you can gain stats AND boost your relationships with the remaining time. Don't go study on your own or whatever if you can do it with someone else.
The game can be rather random in where it spawns your friends during different times of days but it pays off to look around. Don't try to max out all stats - it's very hard to do - but some stats are important to progress relationships (especially romantic ones) so work on those first.
Also, don't expect to get every relationship maxed out - it may be possible but would require so much work and planning that it would suck all the fun out of the game. Go for the people you find most interesting and check before hand on Google what stats they require since I wasted time on relationships that went nowhere because I lacked the stats until way late into the game after which I lacked the time to complete them.
