Dunkirk 10/10

Nolan did a great job in creating tension and not glamorizing war the way other movies have done. He showed the desperation of the soldiers magnificently.

People seem to be very critical about the lack of character development, but the movie isn't about the characters. It's about the event itself and it presents it in a very realistic way.
Some people are complaining that the characters didn't speak much, but then again would most soldiers be chatty during an event like Dunkirk?
Nolan's goal was not to create layered fictional characters but to capture the event that is Dunkirk and to do so in a realistic way.

A goal I believe he achieved.

Man, that.. that was really lacking. Cheap, lazy, kinda shit... yet, suprisingly more engaging, exciting and better written than ghost on the shell...

Can't (usually) miss with zero expectations.

but please dont take what i said as a recommendation of its quality as a film.... I just reaaallly hated ghost in the shell, and this movie at least managed to entertain me (both intentionally and not) more than that shitfest.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword - 6/10

The intentions were good ones here, though when there's poor Ritchie who's forgotten where he left the old brilliance and at the same time the subject is a fantasy-superhero hybrid made with Hollywood in mind, then things inevitably start getting tricky.
It's a movie that has the magical ability to switch between well made scenes going along with the hectic soundtrack (sporting ye stylish signature Guy) and segments of pure trash, some sort of bizarre meatloaf stuffed with deja-vus, predictability and the usual indigestion of wild CGI elements..yet, (almost miraculously) the whole thing remains watchable.

One thing is for sure though, once again our beloved cheeky sleazy cunts have been replaced by occasional and tamer u wot mates, all wrapped in a teen-friendly popcorn action atmosphere that offers little surprises and appeal. If only Guy knew that the brilliance actually went down the toilet :'(

Dunkirk - 6/10

Passable, sterile offering. I'm more and more confident that Nolan is a great european designer, with those cold, angular matte scenes. He shines on that (thanks to Michael Mann mostly) and his movies are aesthetic to a fault. There's not enough meat. And I don't mean ka-booms and splatter, no. He tries to force some emotion through some touchy script moments, designed only for that. But he fails, he doesn't have much emotion really. A shame.

Points go for the spectacle, the show, the theater was booming and splattering sounds like crazy! And for the family boat storyline. Hans Zimmer... well, tiny bits of brilliance but overall a dull soundtrack. Thin Red Line OST by the man himself was way more engaging.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017) - 8.0/10

A Hollywood take on Arthurian legend with some very hectic yet slick cinematography, a weird soundtrack (which I didn't care for), combined with a fresh, "natural" take on magic. Honestly, the mages in this film were more akin to druids/enchanters, but I found that outlook on it very unique. And the mage was cute, despite her accent which annoyed me to no end. Very Happy

I really enjoyed it the film, despite going into it thinking I wouldn't. However, I can't help but feel it would have been oh so much better had they went with an R rating instead.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople - 7/10

A lively adventure in the wild Kiwilands, almost like an awkward contemporary Hobbit with humour, unique characters (including the grumpiest Sam Neill you'll ever see) and pleasant direction. I didn't find it as brilliant as Taika Waititi's previous What We Do in the Shadows, but it's still an entertaining comedy that offers both carefree atmosphere and pathos.

Science Fiction Volume One: The Osiris Child

That right there, is a great way to make your film fail. Doesn't that just SOUND like a shitty STV no-budget lazy scifi film?

Which is exactly why the title pisses me off, because it was surprisingly enjoyable, and actually pretty well made. YES its rough as hell, and would have benefited from a second or third polish of the dialog, and yeah the editing is a bit out of whack and it doesn't flow quite so well...

BUT.. it was a ridiculously enjoyable ride. The story was nothing amazingly special - father desperate to reach his child trapped in a city on a newly terraformed planet, while genetic mutant monster turtles (at least thats what they look like to me Very Happy - i can see why some would see them as cheesy - at times i had a bit of a chuckle, but they really are surprisingly well done movie monsters for film of this budget) from an escaped facility rampage across the planet - BUT the characters (which a little rough in the acting... rough really is the word for this film) are a fun and interesting lot, and their journey is a pretty entertaining one.

What i liked most is that the film had some balls to it, especially about the ending - I always appreciate that in a film, when it goes at least a little against the grain and takes the more difficult path. It threw in a few surprises, it even demonstrated more emotional punch in it than most big budget films do.

So.. yeah...

Rough.

Really rough around the edges, but at its heart, i found a surprisingly enjoyable as fuck movie, even though I'm sure most here will likely hate it. This isn't an A-grade scifi movie... heck, it doesn't even measure up against b-grade bigger budget scifi (like event horizon, etc), but this is... yeah i think this is the biggest surprise, the most fun and genuinely most effort-driven film I've seen in months....

I hope this film can make money.. id love to see a sequel. I don't know where the heck the story could realistically go, but from the fucking abysmal title they went with, it really sounds like they went into this with the intention of expanding the story...

King Artie: legend of the sword

flow.

flooowwwwww.

you know when a movie just.. works? you can forgive a lot; average dialog, meh characters, average action, shit cgi, as long as the movie is put together WELL.

However, when a movie just doesnt feel right... doesnt wow you, even though you find yourself enjoying bits and pieces, its generally going to be a problem with how it flows.. how its put together.. its construction.. and thats were i feel this film fell flat. See, i loved a lot of the action sequences. I loved the gangstarrr' slang and the british street vibe... i liked the less-than-serious approach to many sequences and how the characters behaved... i enjoyed the music, i enjoyed the story (to an extent), i liked the overall journey the characters went on (it felt sufficiently epic), i liked that it did a decent attempt at upbeat adventure while mixing in the occasional deeper emotional punch (not quite finding the right way to mesh them, but not doing too badly at it)...

i just did not love the result when all those elements were packaged together in this film.

great ingredients... less than satisfying meal, i guess.

still.. i didnt hate it. i would rate it as above average, but i certainly understand why the film didnt set the box office alight... the film and not the audiences were definitely at fault here in my opinion.

pity. at least it wasnt a wasted evening. fun enough movie, well above most of the shit thats come out this year at least...

A surprisingly pretty decent criminal drama. The best part of the film is Jaime Lannister's acting. I wish the story was better structured and better in general.

War for the planet of the apes - 4/10 - huge disappointment. I thought the script was horrible. Woody Harrelson was a cartoon, there was a funky monkey and some random human child in the mix, and to top it all off there's no trace of any war. I can't explain how much I disliked this movie without spoiling everything, so I won't. I wish I had never seen this one since it ruined the memory of the first two movies.

Quite good deconstruction of slasher horrors.

Spawn - 2/10
John Leguizamo was fun to watch in it but it's not worth to suffer through this piece of garbage.

It gave me Huge 5 Centimeters Per Second (and Voices of a Distant Star) flashbacks - which is also the superior film between the two. Regardless -- fucker always makes me tear up a little in his films. Embarassed Crying or Very sad
