Unfortunately, I'm sure I saw Roberts mention the latter to be planned for SQ42 (hence why I decided to ask for a refund, but request denied Smile ).

I'd expect the same to be true for the former, although that one I'm OK with (as long as no ground vehicles are used).

I wish he wasn't such a megalomaniac and instead of going insane with a list of features impossible to deliver (let alone balance out for an MMO), concentrated on the Privateer-like space sim first and invested some of that money to buy the rights to use Wing Commander IP in it. Then if that worked out well, he could have expanded on it.

I'm close to feeling my $35 was worth all the juicy drama we've been getting over the years.

Seriously, think about it. Their game is very VERY bare bones yet they paid a small fortune to get Gary Oldman to act in a scene while they didn't even get the basics in place yet. I mean, they threw away money so they could jerk off about how amazing their game might be at Citizen Con. When you pull crap like that, it shows how extremely incapable you are. You leave stuff like that for the LAST leg of the development cycle. You can just hire cheap actors if money ends up running low - but to throw it away on a famous face for what is essentially a cut scene while the game needs so much work on the actual content ... ugh.

So it took them 2 years to make one incomplete planet from four in one system so... let me do the math...

calculating...

It might take them 800 to 1000 years to fullfill the goal. So Much Win

They want to create the whole galaxy by micromanaging every grass plant on the planet and every molecule in space. Smile

So yea it will be a game that will be in development for generations.

You know what would really accelerate the development of your space game? Focus on the fucking space part. I'm pretty sure they could shit out a few thousand solar systems in record time if they didn't have any stupid ground/1st person bullshit to worry about.

This was very predictable. In fact, I predicted this years ago Laughing

Who does that wanker think he is anyway? His ego got so big he thought he could AND create a vast universe AND micro-design every planet? There's a reason there's a thing called procedural generation - even if you don't want to use it for the final planets, it's a good way to get started. Let AI create planets and then tweak, adding custom areas to flesh them out. This way, they can churn out planets and keep on tweaking and improving them. It's a much better system than starting on one planet at a time.

But, I can take a guess why: they want a single stunning planet to show off to attract even more backers. Keep the gravy train going. In the end, you'll have two or three detailed planets, a dozen okay-ish planets and many dozens of crappy empty ones, I predict.

You are missing one thing. They don't actually want to finish anything.

While that is speculation in it's truest form, at least i don't think they'll ever finish it.

I think he saw the money rolling in and he just went in megalomaniac mode.

I think he's a distant cousin of Peter Mollyneux. Funny thing is, I have many old 90's magazines and to see him revered every time he gets a mention really makes you wonder how fleeting fame is. If he had retired and just rested on his list of classics, he would have been a cult hero. Even Lionhead was a big step down from Bullfrog and harmed his reputation big time.

The sudden influx of money fucked with his mind. If he'd received just slightly more than what he initially asked on KS, the scope of the game wouldn't have been blown out of proportion and he'd probably have a functioning game right now. Hell, maybe even SQ42.

could someone give me a sensible TLDR of Star Citizen?

So in a nutshell anyone?

To expound, Chris Roberts - the guy behind the Wing Commander series - pitched a new space game on Kickstarter which looked pretty fancy. It sounded a bit MMO-ish, which was concerning, but it also included a single player element, Squadron 42, that sounded a lot like Wing Commander.

They made a record amount money by the end of the Kickstarter campaign ($6 mil?), and Roberts decided to change the original plan. Rather than using KS as a means to demonstrate public interest and primarily fund the game via investors, they'd go mostly crowd funded. They continued selling ships after the KS as a means of funding, and people lapped it up with millions of dollars continuing to pour in (they passed $150 mil back in May).

The problem of course is all this money is driven by promises of more content. Even during the KS, stretch goals added a lot of features that weren't really practical, budget-wise. While the game has brought in a ridiculous amount of money, it's pretty clear they are spending it faster then they are making it (they have, what? At least 5 different studios across the world working on it?), leading to promising ever more content in order to generate more money, a vicious cycle.

At this point with the constant feature creep, years past the original release date, and news of financial troubles, it seems like we are likely approaching the point of collapse where they go bankrupt. Whether anything like what they originally pitched actually ends up seeing the light of day, who knows. But don't hold your breath.
