The game, the title and details of which will be officially revealed at a later date, will let fans of the strategy card game “fully immerse themselves in the Multiverse,” the fantasy world in which Magic: The Gathering is set.

“It’s Magic: The Gathering like you’ve never experienced before,” said Perfect World Entertainment CEO Bryan Huang. “We are ecstatic about the direction of the game Cryptic has been shaping. It’s always been a dream of ours to bring Magic’s Planeswalkers to a modern RPG.”

Cryptic Studios CEO Stephen D’Angelo added, “Everything from the graphics to the gameplay is being targeted for a truly unique AAA game. We’re thrilled to provide Magic fans with an opportunity to explore the game’s worlds and characters through an entirely new lens. Get ready to embark on a brand new journey.”

Cryptic Studios is currently ramping up production in its Los Gatos headquarters for the development of the game.

I admit I never played the Magic card game but it seems like they would just be ripping off their own Neverwinter game as far as the engine with somewhat similar settings and character types. Cryptic really needs to move away from that dated old Star Trek Online engine they use.

I don't think there will ever be a 'Very Good' MMORPG - I don't think I've seen any originality or improvements since Asheron's Call came out all those years ago.

A single-player RPG based on M:TG would have been quite cool. I'm not convinced about the value of a MMO.
They could recreate this game and it'd be more interesting than a MMO M:TG:
