Yeah but €10? Seriously? TEN EUROS? For a 30 year old game? That's beyond ridiculous - if you're going to release an old game at least put it on GOG and ask a reasonable price.

At first i was like:

But then i remembered those were those strange forums i only seemed to stumble upon while googling things for older games. Laughing

While there indeed were a few helpful threads in there back then, i kept wondering why those forums were still alive even, when you have forums for each game.

So in the end, we've decided we're going to aim for the lowest barrier to developers as possible, with a $100 recoupable publishing fee per game, while at the same time work on features designed to help the Store algorithm become better at helping you sift through games. We're going to look for specific places where human eyes can be injected into the Store algorithm, to ensure that it is working as intended, and to ensure it doesn't miss something interesting. We're also going to closely monitor the kinds of game submissions we're receiving, so that we're ready to implement more features like the the Trading Card changes we covered in the last blog post, which aim to reduce the financial incentives for bad actors to game the store algorithm.

We believe that if we inject human thinking into the Store algorithm, while at the same time increasing the transparency of its output, we'll have created a public process that will incrementally drive the Store to better serve everyone using it.

Just deny obvious shit games to get released on Steam.

No need for "injecting human thinking into the Store algorithm". Rolling Eyes

Since some days i have an annoying problem with Steam when i launch it the first time after PC bootup: The whole application runs extremely slow and i have to wait a few seconds before actions get registered.
It's just fine though for the rest of the day after i restart Steam.

Anyone else has it or knows the cause of it?

Several games installed?

Steam does check for updates and such changes when it's started and if it's a fresh boot it wouldn't be cached into RAM either plus it has to initialize the various hooks and other functions that the software now has.
(It's overlay for one thing, big picture mode and then there's the Chromium browser framework and some other bits.)

Small rant..

Though the main issue I have in terms of performance is after a game has been updated and Steam is doing a scan of the files for it's music database, usually this is pretty quick but for a few games using loose files this slows down the entire HDD until Steam finishes that scan. Very Happy
(At least it's pretty quick, minute or two at most even for bigger games.)

Starpoint Gemini Warlords comes to mind as a recent example since the game consists of some 45.000 loose files and Steam's music database file grows by a full MB when that gets scanned since there's several thousands of sound files and they've released a number of hotfixes since launch so yeah.

Wish you could exclude file formats or have some form of control but there's nothing besides you being able to set where the database files are stored.

Then again it's not that different from Win10 running "compattelrunner.exe" for telemetry whenever you update a software or driver on the PC and sending that off to Microsoft, also hammers the HDD for a few moments ha ha well I guess it's unavoidable.
(Bit different though still tedious having to wait for it to finish up it's scan heh.)

EDIT: Could try emptying out the cache too by removing the folders under ".\Steam\appcache\httpcache" but it might not really do much for overall speed besides cleaning out some files for stuff that's no longer installed and such, beyond that there's not really much you can do although far as configuring the Steam client goes I prefer to keep the direct draw option off as well but that's mostly down to Steam getting some occasional exception error and creating a mini dump and sending off a error report to hell knows where. Very Happy

http://store.steampowered.com/news/?feed=steam_client

https://steamcommunity.com/groups/SteamClientBeta#announcements

They did just release a new version of the client so it's possible it's related to that, beta branch has focused a lot on expanding the Steam gamepad functionality and there's been changes to the Chromium engine used for the inbuilt browser too so it could be due to some of those changes that it's taking longer for the client to initialize after a cold boot or how it's called. Smile

EDIT: And I guess complaints aside it's still faster than Origin ha ha.

Origin used to be pretty quick but the client overhaul made it a really slow starter with how it does a couple of things or something before it's fully loaded plus it has some extra services as well, those are always fun. Or not. Razz

And I suppose that while the old Steam client was fast this new one is a lot more robust and stable.

Yeah 5 voted projects here, checked it a bit early on and probably voted on some stuff there but then it got completely flooded so I basically thought that eh if something looks promising enough it'll likely get voted through quickly.

Turns out most anything was voted through quickly ha ha.

Don't even need reviews or promo keys as long as there's achievements and trading cards it seems.
(Or a uncensor patch if you're doing a VN, it's gotten to the point now where even MangaGamer now considers this a alternative whereas Valve earlier expressively forbade them from doing this but now they've gotten the OK for it.)

So, now all one has to do is fork over $100 to get their game on Steam? Isn't this just going to open the floodgates to even more trash than before?

I think Greenlight wasn't needed anyways and devs were to directly publish their games on Steam.
Greenlight was more of a way to see if people had interest in their games.
