PostPosted: Sat, 27th May 2017 12:47    Post subject: Present for an 18 yr old
My son is 18 this year, now we all know it is a special birthday.

Because of his upbringing ( my influence possibly), he is at college studying game design and has just done his first game for his FMP (final major project). Now needless to say I am the usual boring dad who is incredibly proud of his son. So no need to bore you with that.

However, I want to buy him something really special and PC gaming related. He wants a 1080/1080ti, which is an obvious choice. But being in the UK we pay WAY over the odds for stuff like this.

I don't mind paying if I am going to get a decent deal, however what else would you lot suggest in addition to this? If so where to buy in the UK?

Would a new system be a good buy? He loves all that RGB crap which I don't see the point in.

I want to celebrate his 18th and reward him for his hard work at college.

He currently has a quite decent system which I bought him, which has a 980ti in.

So I am really asking as 18yr olds obsessed with PC gaming, what would you want? Any suggestions?

Online UK only please,m as a man I don't do shopping!

Thanks

Yeah of course money only was an option. I would prefer PC gaming related ideas.

Thank you.

money only. so he can buy what he want or need.
maybe he is still happy with the 980ti and a new card would be a total overkill for him.
of course he would be happy or atleast say so and fake it so you will not be sad.
maybe he would actually be happy if he could buy himself a new mouse or keyboard or controller or monitor or all of that for the same amount of money.

or maybe he is totally happy with his PC and doesn't want to buy anything for it and rather some new clothes or other stuff.

money is always the best option. always.

Yeah money was my first thought, but I sort of wanted something to wrap up. Also he tends to spend his money on crap, I suppose most teenagers do.

Keep any suggestions coming.

Thanks both.

I want him to be liked, not ridiculed for being a complete wanker as he would be if he wore that, but thank you.

More seriously, if he's a responsible dude, "lend" him your place so he can party with a few fellas/gals (or rent such place somewhere), that's always welcome.
If he's rather on the wild side, yeah, give him some pesos to spend, or just outright ask him what he wants.
At 18, sure, you like a surprise, but you'd rather have something you desire than "that" gift.

Or when he's already that gaming-obsessed, maybe a trip to gamescom this year? Could be a fun father/son event, unless he's still in that phase where parents are uncool.

That is something I considered and the best suggestion yet. Cheers

I did, he is a teenager. Have you ever tried to get a straight answer out of a 17 yr old? It's like asking a rock if it likes the sun.

Trip to gamescom would be great, not too costly and they have some dev talks this year as well (Devcom, check it out). They'll be having workshops and what not.

Gamescom is a great idea and it is just after his birthday, and if I go with him time for me to buy a gas mask so I don't have to breathe in smelly teenager stink. Thanks all.

Alternatively, if he's into driving games/simulations perhaps a quality steering wheel would be a good idea on paper. Or a VR device, providing that his system is powerful enough to take advantage of it. In the end it all depends on his needs and/or the way he actually uses the PC, if he's a gaming enthusiast there are always improvements to make the experience better (monitor, SSD, an audio system, and so on).

These are all fairly banal advices (not sure they match his desires), though I remember when I was 18, I was more into materialistic pleasures so to speak Very Happy Laughing

Thanks for all the great replies lad, and making me laugh. On a serious note is a 1080/ti really much better than a 980ti? Some sites say it is others it's not that much difference. Especially when you consider the prices in the UK. Sad

like always this would greatly depend on things like what cpu he's got, what resolution he aims to play in (the resolution of the monitor).

This monitor

CPU is i7-6700k 4.00ghz

He is obsessed with frame rates ! He keeps harping on about a 1080 or 1080ti, but I am not sure it would make that much difference

he would benefit from a 1080ti for sure.. you can even find the exact frame rate difference if you look at some tests and look at comparisons for 2560 x 1440 resolution.. This might be very game dependant too, where it's a 40% difference for some games and less for others..
