Quote:
In Killers and Thieves control a feudal thieves' guild,
preying on the riches of an old and corrupt city.
Recruit randomly generated thugs and crooks and turn them into master thieves and skilled assassins with unique abilities, traits and appearances.
You'll have to steal enough to pay expenses as you expand your influence across the city.

Send your mercenaries on missions to take advantage of the political landscape and cripple your rivals' resources. They won't appreciate the competition.
But that's ok. You've got all the friends you need.

From the map view of the city, the player manages the growth of their guild. They'll recruit new, inexperienced thieves and send them on missions. As they earn gold, they'll be able to spend it on upgrading their headquarters, improve their thieves and expand their holdings. Everything has an upkeep; failing to pay the weekly expenses will result in lost property and personnel. Become too weak and you'll be found out and taken down by your enemies.

Missions are where you acquire stolen goods. Choose multiple thieves and head to a procedurally generated city block. Direct them in real-time through locked and guarded rooms using the skills at your disposal, and loot as much as you can without getting caught. Raising an alarm will have the guards hunting you down, and your thieves aren't super-human: they will get caught and can permanently die.

Balance the risk vs reward of how much you try to get away with on each mission- play it too safe and you might not be able to pay your upkeep. When you get back, inspect your ill-gotten gains and fence the goods for gold. Each mission will cost you a day, so don't waste it.

An all-stealth approach will be riskier and harder, but bloody massacres every mission will kill off your men faster than you can recruit new ones. Remember, you've got Killers and Thieves, but you can play it however you like.

Your thieves will be good at some things, and bad at others. Nobody can do it all. Each starts with an ability (such as wall climbing), and can learn another ability as they advance. They each have a randomly selected trait and flaw which affect how they perform. Lastly, their appearance is randomly generated from hundreds of different combinations.

Killers and Thieves has a lot in common with rogue-likes: permanent death, modular gameplay and lose conditions. The final game will include a story campaign with an ending. Beating the campaign is not a given- it will be challenging.

Killers And Thieves is the (evil) work of Alex Thomas, creative director of indie all-star The Banner Saga. He’s working independently under the banner of Candle And Key as the rest of Stoic move onto the sequel, though they’re acting as publisher. It’s about sending teams of criminals out on missions in a sprawling medieval city, breaking in and getting away with as much loot as possible.

Game is coming together. Many new screenshots and dev posts about the gameplay

On roguelikes
Designing the headquarters
Heists and holdups
Forming a posse
Quote:
You direct your thieves on a strategic level, and then take control of them during heist missions. Not unlike XCOM in some ways, though the strategic level will be less about building new tech and more about sending thieves on smaller jobs like stakeouts and diversions. Often the strategic level is about finding the best place to start a mission.

There’s two types of missions- the kind where thieves go off and handle things themselves, and heists, which the player controls. A normal job is successful or not based on the thief’s skills. A heist depends on the player- so your thieves will come back if you successfully get them out alive yourself.

Quote:
But the bottom line is create a system that feels alive and makes interesting stories. Maybe you raised a high-ranking thief from a pup that turns traitor and you send his own protege to hunt him down before he can inform your rivals. Or you’ll send your crazy-but-gifted stealth expert on a suicide mission and she returns with extra gold to boot just when you think you’re not going to be able to pay the guild dues this week.

Concept was great, but execution and actual game-play during "heists" is heavily flawed. Shame, I thought I was going to love this, but ended up playing Starcrawlers all night instead!

Agreed, I started playing it too hoping to find something fresh and entertaining, but the game is fundamentally broken, tedious and just too simplistic to be fun Okay *ding ding*
