Well, there are still some bugs(no blowouts besides the ones related to the story, some artifacts did not spawn at all, etc) and they'll probably never be able to fix everything.
The underground levels are amazing, but the open ones suck... they're just too empty at times and unfortunately the modders couldn't find a way to use it at all. So it's kind of clear why they were cut out IMO.
Ended the game with a fully modded G36, fully modified Big Ben (desert eagle that shoots 9×39mm ) and a fully modded suit that you're supposed to turn on a certain quest but that pretty much blows away every other armor, exoskelly's probably included.
Had to drop the difficulty down to veteran though, it's annoying to die in two shots even when you have bullet resistance near 90%
Worth at least a playthrough I'd say, but maybe wait for a few more patches
Some cutscene near the end (that's strelok):

Yep, its a true gem, especially with some of the latest mods.
Too bad we will probably never see a well done STALKER 2.
I love SOC.
I could not stop playing it when it came out. It was soo good. And I only played it in old dx7 mode. There was like 300fps difference between it and dx9 mode
I really need to replay that one. I also never could get into 2 other stalker games. Those never felt the same to me

This game was super ahead of its time and open-world shooters are still in high demand, in my opinion no studio has been able to do it properly and with justice yet.
A fully fledged new stalker game would kick major ass, they would ruin it by making it an MMO style multiplayer game though, that seems to be where the money is.

The second game is probably the worst of the series and can be skipped.
I played through Call of Pripyat ~2 years ago and enjoyed it even more than the first game.
You should definately give it a try, as there are some nice mods for it too.
I'm no fan of that hardcore Misery mod, but Call of Chernobyl seems pretty good (combines all 3 games):

Call of Pripyat does offer the best stock experience, but my favorite game was the first one with Oblivion Lost 2.2 mod.
But, Call of Chernobyl mode doesn't have any story, just a combined open world if I understand correctly?

Yea you are right.
It seems to be mostly a sandbox mod (combinin all factions/maps of the games).
There are just a few selfmade quests available.
I'm not sure which mod(s) i used for CoP when i replayed it.
But one definately was a graphical mod, as i still remember that it looked pretty good (considering the games age).

SoC and CoP are both absolute masterpieces, with the first one bearing the charm of a pioneering experience, along with the incredible atmosphere, sense of novelty and an "adventurous" feeling that the sequel(s) could not quite replicate.
CoP however definitely is a more fleshed out game overall, better structured and more polished, with a pleasant survival-like savor (immensely boosted by Misery, which deserves a playthrough on its own in my opinion). It's tough for me to pick a favourite, I have manly love for both really.
That said, I wouldn't dismiss Clear Sky, not completely at least. It has an atrocious and ridiculously linear last part (including *that* ending xD), as well as many silly scripts, but can still provide several hours of genuine Stalker fun, with the clan wars and crazy action involved, despite the cheap/so-so design...and bugs, oh good lord the bugs. This mod can come useful though: http://www.moddb.com/mods/srp
What is the best way to enjoy the original game for a first playthrough? With the story I mean, none of this sandbox autism
And no too much fanmade bullshit by 15 year olds like the modding communities are so inclined to shit out.
I am playing Fallout 4 now so until I finish that, there is plenty of time. (If I need to wait for patches it's ok I mean)
There are two lines of thought when it comes to recommendations for a SoC first playthrough:
1) Stick to the (great) vanilla experience, along with the Zone Reclamation Project that only fixes the bugs/balance without affecting the visuals/gameplay;
2) Go with the Complete mod, that fixes bugs and improves the graphics, but also makes the game considerably easier;

I couldn't play the stock game much, too many in-game features were disabled and the game was rather bland IMHO. A year or so after the release I tried again and the Oblivion Lost 2.2 seemed to be the best balanced mod overall at the time, gameplay wise, while not changing the maps, the story or the gameplay. I highly recommend it (did several playthroughs with it over the years). I used the mod by itself and perhaps some weapon names mod (and a higher res texture pack?), but I see there were some other mod packs later on which added extra weapons, graphics and such:
Just finished Prey and have nothing similar to play so I might try this out myself, actually
The Misery mod made the game rather hard from what I've read by cutting down too much on the available loot (it's probably a cool experience, but probably not for the first playthrough), while the Complete mod mostly improved the graphics only IIRC.

Misery pretty much first of all enhances the visuals. Then we have alot (and I mean a fucking lot) of tedious micromanagement that tie in to survival elements. Other neat little additions that add to the immersion (gasmask is something you have to put on and will limit your vision with overlays that look differently depending on the helmet for example). Pretty much everything you interact with will have a little pause/animation (eating, drinking, skinning mutants etc). Then we have added (sadly artificial) difficulty when it comes to the enemies (which I always custom edit in the config files). The economy is also very harsh but I wouldn't say it limits loot variety, quite the contrary.
Misery is definitely not for everyone. Not even after several playthroughs
