Netflix is developing and producing a new English language drama series based on The Witcher, the globally popular fantasy saga from Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski, that has entranced legions of fans worldwide. Known collectively as the Witcher Saga, Sapkowski's eight novels and story collections center on "witchers" -- hunters who develop supernatural abilities at a young age to battle deadly monsters. The New York TImes bestselling books have spawned a major video game franchise and have been translated into over 20 languages.

Seems like it's the same people involved, but now it's a TV show rather than a movie.

It could be a 100% CGI tv show though. And I wouldn't mind tbh..if it's going to look like Witcher 3 promo videos..But I guess it would be too expensive..

worries me.

The guy is a toxic drunkard with a superiority complex. Laughing

I wouldn't let him anywhere near The Witcher TV show.

Let him have his slice of the pie (he is still butthurt he didn't believe in CD Projekt and refused their original deal), but keep him away from the TV Series.

This would be good too since they could then just use all the same voice actors from the game for the characters. Guess we will know soon enough as they may even have some more news about it at E3 if CDProject Red will be there to show anything off.

it'll never be cgi, it'd be too expensive to produce.

that said, how fantastic would it be if we got a cgi movie with the same level of cgi as the game and its cinematic trailers.

Best news this year. Please don't fuck this up. This has potential to be so much better than Game of Thrones(which still is good).

Apparently the guys from The Expanse are involved in this too.

Executive producers Sean Daniel and Jason Brown (The Expanse), said: “The Witcher stories follow an unconventional family that comes together to fight for truth in a dangerous world. The characters are original, funny and constantly surprising and we can’t wait to bring them to life at Netflix, the perfect home for innovative storytelling.”

well the games developers wont be involved, so the writing, story world, character design, cohesiveness to the games, atmosphere, etc from the games wont be in the show, which - given how amazingly well theyve done with the material, i find that a detriment to the shows potential.. and the expanse, sadly, has pretty terrible character writing...

i just have this horrible HORRIBLE feeling its going to be a monster of the week type show where the witchers go out doing a new contract every episode.

@chiv

As far as I remember the first Witcher book had a "monster of the week" format though. Just saying Smile But it was all connected, so there is that..

And hopefully it will be as gritty and dark as in the books Cool

Lauren Schmidt Hissrich will adapt fantasy saga “The Witcher” into a series for Netflix, Variety has learned.

Like the stories on which it is based, Netflix’s “The Witcher” chronicles monster hunters who, with training and body modification, develop supernatural abilities at a young age to battle deadly beasts. Hissrich will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Her writing and co-executive producer credits include Marvel-produced superhero dramas “The Defenders” and “Daredevil” for Netflix and Starz’s “Power.”

Well, I reckon it's game over. Laughing Add to that Sapkowski The Drunkard with his huge ego and it's a recipe for disaster..

+ I really doubt now that this show will have a proper budget .I'm not even talking about other things this woman will most likely fuck up. It seems to me that netflix suits don't take it seriously. That's a shame..it could be a real GOT killer.

They cannot adapt The Witcher to a TV/movie format. It is all about monsters and fighting monsters, modern CGI cannot cope with that.

Even in GoT the dragons look retarded and any interaction with humans looks fake. Imagine a scene where Geralt fights a group of Drowners or a big Griffin Laughing

Please, god, make this project never see the light of day!

The monsters would definitely be a challenge with a Netflix-esque budget for CGI. However, I disagree with Game of Thrones dragons looking retarded part. The CGI in the initial seasons, granted, was rather sub-par. But now, it's far from retarded. In fact, it's one of the better looking dragons being portrayed, especially on TV, which is extremely rare.

Even in Hollywood movies, the only one I can think of is 'Reign of Fire' which possibly has the best looking dragons overall till date.

Some of the creatures like the Bruxa, Drowners, Wraiths, Grave Hags etc would be doable. But the advanced Draconids, Insectoids & Elementas would be very difficult to pull off.

Depending on what they even want to include on this show, the content we have seen just from the games is so vast, it will make your head spin. Netflix have a huge opportunity here to ride on the success of the game (and the the books). If they fuck this up, there is no second chance for them. I mean pretty much every network is trying to find their "Game of Thrones" now.
